^^^Never trade blood for technological progression, but and as morbid as it sounds, there is always some blood shed in the quest for more performance. It applies to any "fringe of the envelope" human+machine industry - rockets, planes, motorcycles, powerboats, etc.
That said, the saftey standards and saftery materials are 10-fold better than they were in the 50's. I mean, in the 50's who cared about crash energy absorption and crumple zones or breakaway pieces? Hell, they still drove around in COTTON(!) T-Shirts and Pants with open faced helmets!!!
