I have to say the Cayman as a prospective drive compared to a Boxster is growing on me. I too think the shape is more awkward and can look very different depending on the colour choice (My preference is still for seal/meteor grey)

Things I rate on a Cayman after 4 years in a Boxster are:

    • Better side visibility, especially pulling out of oblique junctions.
    • Less wind noise.
    • Less rattles.
    • Ability to have a rear wiper (how often I get into the car, shut the door, only to have to get out again to wipe the rear screen before I drive off!)
    • Better side window fit and reduced chance of them freezing shut (So I have to wait until they thaw enough to drop so I can close the door!)

            Less rattles?

Tell me more about Boxster rattles please . . . I'm considering getting one but I HATE rattles . . .

Just that with the soft top you get a bit more twist in the chassis which can make the areas such as the seal between the roof and the windscreen squeak/jiggle a bit, and the top of the side windows can do the same. Also there can be noises from the windstops... basically over time things get looser or less well sealed against wind, dirt contaminates the seals...

But on balance the rest of the car (trim etc) is no more rattly than I would expect from a Cayman. In my ownership various noises have appeared, and most if not all have shaken down and gone away. The remaining ones I could probably address if I wanted to.

I do have 45k miles on it now, and have the hard top fitted at the moment. I use it every day and don't have time for it to spend weeks in the shop getting noises fixed. And in my experience, it's better to let the noise go by itself than have a dealer remove and re-fit bits of trim randomly  'cause they're not really sure where the noises are coming from.

Try taking a 4 year old high miler out for a test. See what you think?

I wonder if any other high-mile/age 987 owners would care to offer their opinion? (PJ?)

    Hope that helps! Smiley

Hi wtsnet Smiley After 68 tkm (daily driver for her and 'Ring-tool for him) the Boxey still feels rock solid Smiley Unless the car has to swallow cobblestones or those rattlestones (caroussell) at the 'Ring, there are no rattles or disturbing noises at all. Also no signs of body flex at the door sills etc. The windstop makes some rattling noises at higher speeds, but that's not a sign of wear, it has been a feature from the beginning Smiley

IMO the rigidity of the Boxster is outstanding compared to it's competitors. A buddy who uses to play with his Z4 at the 'Ring had serious issues after one season only (car turned into a wobbling pudding Smiley)

Mind you though I'm not the most sensitive guy regarding noises (unless it's something mechanical - in this respect I'm always hearing the grass growing).

Maybe DC can comment how it felt from the passenger seat in my car Smiley

Your car felt as tight as mine, no rattles, squeaks or any impresssion of wear and tear - amazing considering the 'Ring miles it had done. I must admit I came away from my pax-laps with a much heightened respect for the 987! Smiley

Re: Distance yourself from the Cayman S.

    Hi guys! Smiley

That was a quick response! Do you do the Ring roof-up or roof-down PJ? Interesting about the Z4! Smiley

I expect if I cleaned my roof-seal rubber I'd get no noise. Another issue I've had is the side window 'up' positiong getting confused after being frozen shut, and the window motor straining to open it. That used to mean the window went up a bit too far and rattled against the hard-top a bit.

Question: (I can't remember) Do the side windows on fixed roof Porsche's (ie the Cayman) drop down and tuck under the same way as the Boxster does? Or don't they bother?

Just depending on the weather Smiley I often asked myself, whether the roof mechanism suffers less with the top up if you go for a spirited lap but nobody could really tell me.....

I treat all the rubber seals with some greasy stuff twice a year (before/after winter season).

And yes, the side windows of the P-cars with a fix roof also drop down a bit when you open/close the door.
