    Pagani Zonda R unveiled in Vienna

    Zonda R

    While we certainly cannot say the Zonda F lacks performance figures, driving around the Nürburgring in 7:27:82 and achieving lateral G forces of almost 1.5 G, it is however a road car, easy to drive, intuitive and setting the benchmark for comfort, safety and lightweight. Paired with a quality finish and the attention to detail this made the Zonda F one of the most desirable supercars resulting in the 25 Coupé models being sold out in record time.

    This did not seem to fulfil the requirements of our most demanding customers, who adore the weekend drive on a racetrack.

    The spark has been set by an Italo-American customer, enthusiast and already proud owner of 3 Zondas. He describes the project this way: "The thought has been on my mind for quite some time, but I am not interested in racing".

    The Zonda R is born with full liberty. The target: the ultimate performance at the racetrack without any implications of rules, except for safety, where no compromise is allowed.

    In September 2006 the first drawings were ready, but it was crucial to have the support of Mercedes-AMG for a high revving engine with a power output of 750hp, dry sump, light and with a low centre of gravity. The basis was the self supporting engine of the mighty CLK GTR, which has dominated the GT championships.

    Eve at constant racing pace the engine would have to cover over 5.000 km before servicing. The challenge has been accepted without hesitation.

    The Zonda R is a car designed from scratch, with only 10% of the Zonda F components to be carried over. The suspension forged in Avional, a new Pagani six speed transversal sequential gearbox, carbon fibre monocoque, aeronautical four pump fuel tank are only part of the equation.

    The wheelbase has grown by 47mm, the overall length by 394mm and the track is increased by 50mm. The bodywork and aerodynamics have been studied to offer maximum downforce. Even though built for the track, the project would not have received kick off, if the quality and finish of the car and its details was not up to the level of the Pagani road cars.

    One of the first cars to be delivered however will be kept in a living room, designed by Pagani and built with the same materials as the Zonda F, beautifully textured carbon fibre, avional, titanium, inconel and other state of the art materials. Additionally it will feature a bespoke HiFi System that will allow the customer to listen to the sound of this car at Le Mans and the Nürburgring.

    Technical Specifications

    This Zonda is purpose made for track use, without restrictions of any competition rules or homologation, with the only exclusion of the passengers' integrity, where no compromise is tolerated according to our philosophy and state-of-the-art safety measures are featured.

    A new heart

    The engine is built by the racing specialists at Mercedes AMG, where the championship winning DTM cars are born, as well as the CLK GTR, probably the most devastating and effective weapon ever to compete in the GT series. From it's engine the Zonda R borrows the basic architecture including an ingenious dry sump allowing a low centre of gravity. This self-supporting engine with 750 hp at 8000 rpm and 710 Nm of torque carries a lightweight carbon fibre high- performance intake system, a racing multiple disc sintered clutch and Formula 1 style exhaust system, hydroformed in Inconel 625 and ceramic coated for optimal heat dissipation. The power unit combined with a 6 speed transversal manual sequential synchronised gearbox is designed to satisfy the most ambitious drivers.

    The chassis

    The central carbon chassis will incorporate a roll cage and a rubber racing fuel tank with 4 fuel pumps and quick refuel filler like on GT race cars. The wheelbase has been increased by 47mm to offer the best stability. The front and rear subframes are brand-new, built to accommodate a new suspension geometry, produced in avional. The magnesium forged rims with central wheel nut and a quick pneumatic lifting system allows fast and effortless changes of the slick tyres.

    Bodywork and aerodynamics

    The new bodywork has been honed to offer elevated downforce even in low speed corners. The longer front bonnet with flaps, closed underbody and the rear overhang with the adjustable rear wing and race derived diffusor translate into shattering aerodynamic efficiency and will let you experience cornering speeds beyond imagination.

    The car displays and logs information about the amount of dowforce that the car is generating at each moment. Combined with the adjustable wings you can easily find the best setup for each track.

    Workstation

    The interior is designed to accommodate the driver and passenger in bespoke seats, built to offer the best support, when the G-forces from the vehicle dynamics come into question. The Digitek instrumentation provides the essential information and a sophisticated telemetry allows through a variety of sensors to monitor every single component of the car.

    WOOOW ! Zondas are the best cars ever to be made !! i would literally die on the spot if someone gave me the keys to that, thats about how much i love the Zonda.

    I gotta say it. I don't think it looks all that good. It looks wild, there's no doubting that. But I feel like the Zonda F is one of the sexier cars on the market now, and although I understand this car's for the track only, it just has too much going on. 

    I get the impression that there's a really sexy sleek shape going on, but it's being covered by edges, fender flares, pieces sticking out, spoilers, and other aerodynamic things. It will be ridiculous on the track without a doubt, but It's just  little "too much".

    @ REALZEUS: I suggest we start a campain to make that race happen at the Ring when this baby gets delivered. That would be the best race video ever. In fact, it sounds like a perfect TopGear episode.

    @ AndyM: So is every other car that is not homologated and is purposefully designed for track use only ie. FXX, MC12 Corsa, etc.

    I must say that I was awestruck with the design language, and build choices of the Pagani - since the very first day I saw one (web only - never saw one in the carbon flesh). More so than the car, what impresses me most is Horatio Pagani himself. Just imagine what it takes to (near) singlhandedly pen the shape, do significant engineering, assemble a team of partners and builders and on and on, to produce such a great machine.

    Even more than driving one, I would love the chance to meet Mr. Pagani, tour the production site, and understand a bit of how he thinks. To create, from a clean sheet, a machine that takes on the best in the world and, for his design center, exceeds the best in the world, is simply unimaginable.

    The Zonda series is simply the most elegant expression of a mid-engine sports car ever created.

    @ Emmanuel: I like your idea very much indeed, but I somehow doubt that you would find a lot of FXX and Zonda R owners willing to lend their 2 million Euro hypercars to TG... lol

    It really is something. It out does spyker for unique automotove machining and out does ferrari for racecar like interior layout. I have worked with carbon fiber and metals and I appreciate what these guys have done in such an apparently flawless way. A work of art.

    Sorry to the guys who are currently bored with high end cars, you can't seriously say that with things like this and cgt + others exist.

    Anyone got shots from some distance with all exterior panels on?

    This is what really bugs me about cars today. I suspect this car would cost in the neighborhood of one million dollars if not more. Yet, there are two US cars the Viper and the Corvette both around $100,000 also road cars which would spank this car rather easily.

    What is the point of the car and how do you justify the cost?Smiley I recognize that it has over the top styling with limited production but is that enough to make it worth the cost?Smiley

    I don't believe I will ever understand Porschephiles. One would have thought they would have embraced my comments with enthusiasm given that Porsche has always delivered performance at a reasonable price though an ugly duckling.Smiley

    The Zonda R has just been released, there are no official times yet. You are talking about the Zonda Fs Nürburgring laptime which is quite similiar to the time of ZR1 and ACR (to be precise). So unless you know more than us, better do your homework.

    I certainly respect the magnificent times that these two cars posted but I cannot see the reason of reference to these cars, neither the cause for your statement about Porsche customers. Apart from that, these two cars are also faster than your yellow cruiser. So what´s the reasoning for that? Smiley

    This car is the Zonda R. The Zonda F Clubsport did the 'ring in 7:24.7 seconds. That is faster than the ZR1 and the stock Viper ACR. The ACR with hard-core package and suspension & aero  adjustments did it in 7:22.1. There is no ring time for the R yet, but given that it has 109 more HP than the F Clubsport I think it will be back on top of the list. Price is rumored at $1.2 Million with production of 25.

    This comes back to my Timex/Rolex debate. They both keep time, which one would you rather have?

    My yellow cruiser is for sale. Time to move on.

    I honestly have lost interest in cars. Which is why when I see the performance value of the respective cars I just shake my head in disgust.

    In the past with Ferrari, at least in the US, you could buy and drive it, sell it and not lose money. So it was a no brainer to own one.Today that is not the case. Though I believe that  the econmy has played a big role, a more significant event has been the CA. GT. It has tarnished and cheapen the brand thereby devaluing all its models. Sad, very sad.

    ^Maybe you should buy a classic car, like an Aston Martin or Jag E Type etc. That way you can still turn heads in your nice car, maintain resale value and not have to worry about performance. Very respectable cars indeed.
