    Oil Consumpton 911.2

I just wanted a view about the level of oil consumption that my new car is indicating that it is using.

I took delivery in Sept of a 911.2 Carrera S, PDK. After approx 6 weeks and approx 1,200 miles it asked for oil, which I gave it. About 1/3 of a litre. Another 2 weeks and it asked for more, so I took it back to Porsche to have it checked. They said it might be a faulty level indicator....they topped it up and gave it back, I don't think they replaced anything.

Now after a total of 2,565 miles it is asking for more....

I don't drive that badly, but do have a tendancy to drive in Sport mode, so is this normal or should I have it checked again?

    Re: Oil Consumpton 911.2

    Shogun,

Its normal, its the same as my new Targa 4S Gen 2, I have done 1500 miles now and feed the same amount of oil.

I also checked with my OPC who also say its what to expect.

So dont worry and enjoy your car!!

    Nige.

Some 911s seem to use almost no oil at all from new, others start off using quite a lot but consumption drops off considerably after the first few thousand miles.

Assuming your dealer used a full liter, your car has only consumed roughly 1.3 liters over its first 2.500 miles, which is nothing to worry about.

Simon was saying to me the other day that his 997.2 C2S is drinking oil very very rapidly...

    Re: Oil Consumpton 911.2

I agree with Fritz. My C2S was quite thirsty for the first few thousand kilometers. Oil consumption has dropped substantially since then. I would say that what you are experiencing is quite normal.

FWIW, Here's the MY2007 word from "Central Command" regarding how much oil you can burn.

    Re: Oil Consumpton 911.2

My 2007 997S burned about 1/2 liter during break-in and then none during 15k miles of use.  My 2007 GT3 burned about 1/2 liter in 10k miles total.  About 50% of those miles were going to the track, on the track, and back home again.  No RMS issues either.  Just the luck of the draw I suppose - and I'm crossing my fingers that my 2009 C2S will not be an oil-burner.

    Re: Oil Consumpton 911.2

My 997.2 C2S with PDK uses oil too - at least 4 litres so far in 6K miles

    Re: Oil Consumpton 911.2

    Thanks guys

Very re-assuring, I'll fill up and enjoy....

    Re: Oil Consumpton 911.2

I have 09 c2 and the onboard oil measuring computer is showing me one bar from the bottom.  So pretty much empty after 2500 miles.  My question is how much liters/quarts should i top off?  How do i know when to stop?  I know this sound dumb but please someone tell me please.

Add 0.5 Liter and see how much it changes (wait 15 min and measure again).  Better to add too little than too much.  The manual says you should only add 0.5 liter at a time.

The last bar on the graph doesn't mean it's empty (far from it).

Mines now slowing down after 3.5k but had been pretty thirsty for oil to that point.  Annoying as I bought a 5L bottle and have used 2L of it!

That goes against the norm. I would have it checked.

4400kms including 3 track sessions and no oil required.  Did do an oil change recently though.

Gnil confirms that we are not out of the woods though

Mine uses about half a litre ever 2000 miles now.

It has 9.2k Miles on the clock.

    Re: Oil Consumpton 911.2

FWIW,  Here's a compilation I found of what various guys on these 997 boards have reported as far as total oil consumption per total mileage: Wow, it's all over the place!

    Re: Oil Consumpton 911.2

My 997.1S has used 1 quart per thousand miles like clockwork--since day one.  I almost don't even need an odometer.  I can tell how far it's gone by the oil level.  I believe that Porsche has no clue why a certain small percentage of their engines suck down oil, while (fortunately) the majority use little to no oil.  We know it has nothing to do with (1) breakin nor (2) driver's techniques.
