it cant be a panamera or even a cayman! the lines are exactly like a 911...
look at the windows format.,. a more agressive 911...

911 shapes look so much alike through various generations that PAG can afford to show a new body underneath a little cameo and no one but die hard fans even notice. It seems the car is a logical evolution of the 997 with a lower body and the new mirror position introduced with the Panamera.
Hmmm, I do like that wing on the camo'ed car shown above the Carrera, it looks like the "tea tray" wing on my 993 Turbo, so maybe when the 991 comes out, we can order the camo wing as an option.

Gnil:Yes there was and I believe it's concealed in the messy front bumper. In terms of efficiency and aerodynamics the new 998 will be marvel as it's lower and wider than the 997, not to mention all the aero gizmos.
And there was a post about a retractable/mooving front lip about a year ago. with the drawing of plan register the rights.

998 , if not 'on the dot' , is very much the same size as 997 - slightly wider track and fenders . ( example - A pillars base distance vs. No. plate lenght 2.54 and 2.56 / in proportion ! Lenght 8 and a bit of wheel dia. WB 4.7 wheel dia. Hight 2.5 of wheel dia.) This method is not 100% accurate to the last mm , but shows very closely ratios / proportions .

This wouldn't be fair play for some reason...
Btw: regarding a mid-engined 911 all I can say is that there already is one...the Cayman. 
The "other" mid-engined model(besides Boxster and Cayman) will be a car in the Carrera GT class. 
There is one question only: will the project go through or will it be delayed due to the financial world crisis.

Misha - I love this Photoshop of that CGT! This car looks insane!
Unfortunatley Porsche is going the same old way with the 911! A third car based on the 996 frame, for a company making more than 50 % profit per car its a shame. But thats the reason why they make it.
For me, this next generation must be outstanding and very different, otherwise I most probably will change the lanes and check other sport cars.

Lars , I love that P-shop very much and hope / expect Porsche to build that car - next CGT .
I don't mind Porsche is making 3rd. generation 911 on the 996 frame / platform - nothing wrong with that , specialy when that platform is perfect . In development of new car , platform is the most expensive segment and in case of new 911 that money will be spent on something else , I am sure , and car will stunned the motoring world .
