    Porsche Carrera- "the environmentalist's choice"

    Read this today on n-tv:

Car tester, former race driver and host of the TV show "Motor", Klaus Niedwiedz, consumed 6,7l/100km with a 997 Carrera with 345 hp and PDK. The test drive covered 648km on public roads.

The 911 was driven 180km on country roads, 30km in the city and the rest on the highway with speeds between 90-130km/h and averaged 84km/h. The car was filled up prior and after the drive under the supervision of a Dekra expert. Bonnet and tank was sealed.

    That's great news!

A superb sportscar for the real world.

No frills and hype for Porsche. Only substance.

Oh Geez! I sure hope he wasn't using hypermiling techniques!  Smiley

I hear getting behind one of those hypermilers makes you to pull your hair out and scream.

Oh boy, I just hate such stories.

What does this have to do with real life Porsche driving? Porsche driving is about having fun. You can't have fun with a sportscar driving slowly, unless you're a masochist. Smiley

This is actually one of these stories I would like to read about the Cayenne for example but about the 911? The Porsche marketing department must really be bored.  Smiley

On the other hand, I'd rather like to see the Cayenne this way than watching the fuel consumption while driving so slow that I want to kill myself from boredom. Smiley

Re: Porsche Carrera- "the environmentalist's choice"

Driving a Porsche doesn't mean going flat out all the time and everywhere.

The message is that with the Carrera you have your choice to drive economically or very sportingly, depending on your mood and the circumstances.

I don't find anything wrong with that mix.

Moreover, with the new EU regulations agreed last week, manufacturers producing between 10,000 and 300,000 units p.a. ,like Porsche, don't have to comply with the strict 130g/km limit by 2013 but still they have to reduce their emissions by 25% on their 2007 average within the same period.

So we'll have to get used to economy also being a priority in sports cars besides speed and handling.

This is an interesting counterpoint to the threads which we have read here recently to the effect that the advertised fuel consumption figures (based on standard driving cycles defined by law-makers) are impossibly optimistic.

This  show appears to prove that the low fuel consumption figures are indeed possible. It's just that none of us (myself included) really want to drive as economically as is possible.

    Kind of related:

The Turbo is actually advertised as an air cleaner!

In cities like LA, the air coming out the exhaust of the Turbo (not sure about NA Carrera)  is supposedly CLEANER than the air that went into the air intake.

    LOL

If you get one of those after-market extended front spoiler lips I guess that you could also claim to be sweeping the streets as you drive around. Smiley
