    EU Regulation for car mirrors

Has anyone read this new EU Legislation which is forcing car makers to fit truck sized mirrors to small cars? I'd love to learn on what criteria the size of these new mirrors is calculated(window surface/overall size of the car/...) The reason why I'm asking is that, apparently, not all 2008 models are affected by this regulation, or at least know how to dodge it. Take a look at this

    A3

    vs. A3 FL

     997

    vs. 997 FL

Seems clear to me that these 2008 models have had their deal of mirror enlargment (sadly enough). What struck me was that VW's latest models, for example the Sirocco and the Passat CC (both 2008 models), weren't affected by the hideous consequences of this EU regulation.

    Let me show you: Sirocco

     VW Passat CC

And not only VW's sportier models seem unfazed, even the new Golf VI has far more elegant mirrors than its Audi sibling... And why does for example the facelift BMW E9x M3 gets away with the same small mirrors as his 2007 brother?

Is there away to sidestep those regulations? Has anyone yet found this  legislation on the internet? If so, I'd love to read it.

Please feel free to share your thoughts.

Hmmm, the layout didn't came out exactly as planned, I hope you still get my point Smiley

Small things like that irritate you when you start being over-observative and paying too much attention to minor details.

It is like if you become obsessed with a mole or a small imperfection on your or someone else's face.

So, lesson of the day, it's easier not having to look at a mole every day, ergo a car with nice mirrors makes my life better Smiley

No seriously, all those safety regulations influencing the look of cars (the bonnet bulge on small hatchbacks for pedestrian collisions, bumperettes on US Porsches, daytime running lights on all future cars, ...), I'm tired of it.

Can you imagine a Ferrari 250 GTO with huge mirrors, a bulge in the bonnet for unlucky pedestrians and some bumperettes in the rear just in case someone drives in to you? Smiley

Re: EU Regulation for car mirrors

Traffic conditions including the density of traffic and the speed of travel have increased enormously in the last 40 years and every little safety feature helps.

Driving a car with the larger mirrors I notice that I am somehow more comfortable in traffic.

In the 60-70s very few cars had even one door mirror but the inside mirror was enough because traffic was very light.

I agree. You shouldn't allow a little thing like a mole on your face irritate you.

Now, a rat   .................that'd be different.

To get back to the topic, I suspect that the Euro legal requirement being discussed does not specify the size of the mirror surface in square centimeters. It is more likely to specify the minimum "field of view" behind the car which a driver in all likely seating positions is able to see in the mirror. So depending on the position of the mirror in relation to the driver's seat, some car models might need larger mirrors than others to comply.

Re: EU Regulation for car mirrors

I was driving an A-Class rental car some days ago. The mirror has been liken on a track. I was finding it very irritating, this thing was almost as huge as a bathroom mirror.

I don't know why I should be able to see the following planes as well, always thought the cars are enough ;)

I understand your point, safety on the road should be a n°1 concern for everyone, but from a car enthousiast's perspective, I'm afraid, in 20 years we'll all be driving around in exactly the same looking, crash absorbent bubbles so pedestrians are actually comfortable whilst being run over, ...

Re: EU Regulation for car mirrors

Governments and other authorities and pressure groups don't view cars as objects offering fun and pleasure but as a means of transport and as a necessary evil.

This is very unfortunate for us car enthusiasts but perhaps 95%+ of the world population have different priorities as regards automobiles.
