Oil Separator Failure
I wanted to post my recent maintenance issue on my 2006 Boxster S with about 38,000 miles on the clock. I was cruising down the highway and all of a sudden noticed huge billows of white smoke coming from my exhaust and squealing noises coming from the engine compartment; there was also a smell like something was burning. I used Porsche Roadside Assistance and got the car over to the dealership. The tech pinpointed the problem and said the oil separator had seized and oil was being vaporized and sent out through the exhaust. Since I pulled over so quickly, I only lost about 2.5 quarts out of the 10 quarts the tank holds, so the engine was completely unharmed.
I was glad that this turned out to be a minor problem, because I thought there was a major problem with the engine.
