    Continental Vmax tyres on GT2

I am getting a new set of wheels for my inbound GT2 and intended to keep the factory wheel/tyres as is so was looking at the options for tyres.

    The options seem to be:

    Michelin Sport Cup OE NO

Pirrelli Corsa (can't find any reference but presume these must be Porsche "N" approved since Markus has them on his GT2 !)

Continental Vmax - these do not have the "N" Porsche approval but are available in GT2 sizes and are being fitted to GT2s by the likes of Cargraphic.

The first thing that strikes about the vmaxs is the tread wear index is 280 which compared to the Michelin's 80 would indicate that these are very "hard" tyres...

Baring in mind my car is for road use only and a bit less noise/harshness would be a benefit, does anyone have any experience with these tyres or comments to make ? BTW the vmaxs are hellishly expensive at £650 each for the rears Smiley

Re: Continental Vmax tyres on GT2

The Conti VMAX is the most adavnced production road tire on the market.  It has the highest speed rating of any production tire by a wide margin and is certified up to 360 km/h.  The tire recently tested successfully at 409 km/h.  It was designed exclusivly for the ultra exclusive sports cars that are able to reach those speeds.

You might consider sticking with either the Corsas or the MS Cups... I am still amazed what a huge difference the winter tires on the GT2 make (more bumpy ride, more understeer, lighter rear end under power, easy to induce oversteer when braking lightly in fast AB bends etc.) All this made very clear to me how important the right tires are for these perfect and highly refined sportscars. Using a different tire than those recommended by Porsche (i.e. MS Cup and Corsa) might have a negative effect on the perfect balance of the GT2. Don't you think so?

BTW, my rear tires (Corsa) need to be replaced now. They were used over a distance of approx. 10,000km (very fast, mostly AB, though) and about 400km on the track.

That doesn't tell you anything about the tire's dry or wet handling properties, or about tread life. Smiley

If the Conti Vmax should turn out to be a one-trick pony, then this particular trick would be pretty redundant anyway, since the two "officially approved" tires are also capable of sustaining the car's maximum speed. Smiley

The Corsa System tyres are excellent. Wet, dry, hot, cold, road, track. They also wear very well. THE best tyre available for your car.

You can also get Motorsport Corsa's in 997GT2 sizes now (a touch better than the Corsa System on track). They look like this...

Also Hoosier R6's are fantastic on track...

Re: Continental Vmax tyres on GT2

    Many thanks for the feedback....

I am struggling to find the Pirellis listed anywhere in the new 325/30ZR19 size, can anyone link me to a reference to these or maybe they are too new ?

The Pirelli pattern certain "looks" more road orientated than the Michelin Cup although interestingly the Pirelli has a "60" wear index compared to a "80" for the Mich (although I'm not sure one can compare these numbers accross brands ?)

Agree with the "One trick Pony" comments about the Contis and that "280" wear rating does make one think they have to be rock hard !

Re: Continental Vmax tyres on GT2

The 325 Corsa System is just appearing on the scene - likewise the Motorsport Corsa. Try Steve at Simply Tyres. He had 5 sets of the Corsa's a couple of weeks ago. He can get the Hoosiers too.

The wear index is confusing. The Corsa system definitely lasts longer than the Cups (without factoring in that is comes with 2mm more tread to begin with!)

More than wear index , I would compare the weight of thise tires !  Contis are very light (est)

Re: Continental Vmax tyres on GT2

The Michelin and Pirelli are both race compounded tires.  They will wear out extrememly quickly as they are meant for track use.   If you are looking at keeping the car on the street and not tracking it ever you should consider the Conti Vmax as it is meant for road use and not configured exclusivly for track use like the other two options you are looking at. Yet at the same time it gives performance qualities that a car like the GT2 can take advantage of. That is why the treadwear rating you are seeing is higher, compounding for race tires is much much softer.

I don't want to appear ungrateful for your input but you have basically just restated what has already been said in this thread (but without using specific published wear rate data which may or may not be comparable between brands) - just how "race compound" the Mich and Pirelli are and how "road use" orientated the Contis are is the moot point  and actual experience of the tyres is what I am after not statements..... but thanks for the input anywaySmiley

Nothing to add, just wanted to express my excitement for you on your impending GT2 arrival Toby Smiley

    What's the estimated delivery date?

Re: Continental Vmax tyres on GT2

GT2 delivery dates have been affected by factory one day shutdowns, to 'adjust' production levels on all models. Mine was due to start build 24th Nov. but nothing has happened yet.

Re: Continental Vmax tyres on GT2

Back in 2005, when I first drove a 911 (a 996 GT3 MkII) on R compound tyres I knew I would never be content with "normal" road tyres again.

Fast forward to 2008...more and more cars are coming from the factory fitted with "road legal trackday tyres". GT and RS porsche's, BMW M3's, Lambo's, Ferrari's, Lotus, even Renault with the new R26R. Tyres are super critical to performance and the car manufacturers know it so this growing trend is set to continue.

The tyre companies have responded by developing hybrid products. The new Cup+ from Michelin is a perfect example. It combines characteristics of both road and track tyres in a way not seen before. For example grip levels are higher than regular PS2's yet the Cup+ gets up to temperature almost immediately and service life is determined by tread wear not heat cycles. It also weight almost 1 kg less than a PS2 in the same size.

The Corsa System is even better in my view. In fact it's THE benchmark road legal performance tyre. It works brilliantly on road and track, hot, cold, wet, dry. In typical use, the wear rate is very similar to a regular road tyre such as the PS2.

997GT2 sized (N rated) Cup+ and Corsa System tyres are simply the best road legal tyres on the planet. That's why Porsche specify them.

Hog, this doesn't seem to fit with the info I have been given....

Was told weeks ago that my "build date" was 26th November - then more information came through last week, paint date 25th November, Build date 27th November, Completion 1st December, latest today is the car is built and going through final inspection before it is loaded on a truck bound for Wilmslow UK..... The factory apparently shuts 16th December.

Your OPC should be able to bring up similar details to above on their system - keep us informed Smiley

FYI about updates, here is the latest email just recieved from my guy at the OPC:

We will check every day on Porsche Link, next change on your car will read “dispatched vehicle left factory”, then “arrived UK shipping port”, then “Transport  UK Dealer, We get the car that day, so give or take within one day’s notice we will have the car, will keep you informed every day.

Scott. many thanks for the information Smiley (sorry, wanted to use new smiley)- so the Pirellis are the ones to get in your opinion... My preffered dealer Event Tyres says the rears (Pirelli) are on back order with no availability date..... My wheels are still a way off yet so hopefully the situation may change !

Guys, a little sad I know, but I am guessing most have seen the video in the link below - it is one of my fav GT2 pornos

This car is one of the German demos which has been seen a lot in mags etc, I froze a frame to id the tyres - are these Pirellis or Mich ?

Re: Continental Vmax tyres on GT2

    I have just about given up with these guys;

    1. Placed deposit MAY 07 for GT2.

    2. OCT 07, Sorry, you were no. 3 on our list and are allocation is for only 2 cars.

    3. April 08, heard on the net that some demo GT2 will come back into the network. Put my name down - again.

    4. August 08, told by OPC that we have a black GT2 demo coming back. Was given reg no. & spec. Sorted Insurance, etc.

    5. Sept. 08, sorry that car was sold by dealer principal to one of his mates.

    6. Sept. 08, You can have one of the last RHD GT2 builds.

    7. Build date Oct, sorry Nov, now maybe delivery next year, due to factory dshutdowns, delays and shortage of parts. Being told sorry, But you saved on the VAT decrease, next laugh will be that all prices have just been increased by Porsche.

    8. Who the f**k knows or cares!

Very similar story to me..... #7 is unbelievable, just sounds plain amateurish and wrong. One of the stipulations of these last '08 RHD GT2s was that they HAD to be delivered in '08 and registered as '08 cars - so what the hell are they playing at Smiley

Re: Continental Vmax tyres on GT2

Latest update today is that the car is in the trim shop and waiting for; ignition switch surround trim and speaker trim panels which have been rejected on quality grounds. I specced full grey leather interior with full deviated stitching package and full carbon package. That seems to be the stumbling block and newest completion date is 15th Dec.Smiley

I certainly have never heard, "all cars must be registered in 08" piece of salesman's fairy tales.Smiley

    Oh Scheiße!

I won't be doing much of a break in, the engine will have already been up to red line on the dyno and during testing , the clutch leg is a concern but if my "chicken" legs can't take it I am going with a retrofitted hydraulic stystem off a 997tt....

On the TPMS, I have just bought 4 new sensors to put in my new wheels, is it as simple as just bolting them all in with the special valves and the cars system just sort of bluetooths up automatically ? What is needing resetting ? I never had any problems with the TPMS in the CGT Smiley

Re: Continental Vmax tyres on GT2

I have been told by my porsche dealer that  if you add new sensors they need to be reset at the dealer

Re: Continental Vmax tyres on GT2

When I swapped my Turbo wheels to ther HRE's I also transfered over the TPMS sensors.

The fitter broke one of the sensors so had to purchase a new one for me.

The car can do a TPMS reset and rediscover the sensors.  This worked within about 20 mins of driving.

I am unsure about recalibration though as the new sensor over the last 9000 miles has always been 1 or 2 psi lower from the other 3 sensors whilst the tyres are warming up ie. slower to react.  All align once warmed up though.
