Object in tire. What to do?

Well, I put my snows on the other day and noticed that one of my rear tires has an object in it. It is not losing air. It's possible that this isn't very deep and there is no risk of puncture. On the other hand, it might go all the way through and may eventually go flat.

Should I get it fixed? There is enough tread on the tire that I don't want to replace it if I don't have to.Smiley

Re: Object in tire. What to do?

Since you already have other tires on your car - pull it out and see how deep it goes in, it may be very superficial especially since it's in teh deepest part of the tire/on the tread.

That's what any shop will do anyway, that's the only way to tell. If it looks border line once you pull it out, squirt some water on the hole, if it bubbles you're losing air.

If I were a betting man I'd say it's nothing, doesnt look thick/strong enough to be able to pierce the tire.

Funny, I put my snows on myself just this past Sunday.

Hard to tell, looks superficial but may have gone all the way through and since there is a tight fit of the rubber around it it may not loose air, or ever so slowly. Since its in the centre area of the tire there should be no compromise to the tire itself and I would take it to a shop and get it pulled out and fixed if needed for peace of mind.

It's _gotta_ come out, IMO. Even with normal accelerations and braking It's just getting jambed in there more and more, even as it's getting worn down. Just guessing but, say you drive on a gravel road, one of those stones is going to line up perfectly and jamb it in further and eventually create a puncture.

Bite the bullet and plan to pull it out when convenient to repair. It's possible there's NO puncture.

Repair recco: remove tire and bring only tire to Porsche (if they'll fix it) or a _GOOD_ reputable maybe PCA-approved tire repair guy. leave car at home on jackstand.

After it gets plugged and patched? Avoid _sustained_ autobahn speeds over 140mph.  Smiley

Re: Object in tire. What to do?

The summer tires are off the car at the moment... I'll pull the thing out tomorrow and see what happens. I will also put some soapy water on the hole to see if leaks. I really hate plugging tires, but I guess since it's in the meat of it, it should be ok.

Re: Object in tire. What to do?

Yeah, that puncture is in an "ideal" spot.  Get it plugged and patched properly from the inside and It'll be fine IM(amateur)O. You'd need a very hot day and a very high sustained speed (130+?) to be taking a big risk with that repair.

i would remove it. Today they have great solutions to replace the hole. You will even say " but where is the Hole" you want see anything

I pulled the thing out. Luckily it turned out to be nothing. Just to be sure I put some soapy water on the hole but it didn't bubble so all is good.

As an aside, I know they have patches (I think they are called mushroom patches, because that's what they look like) for holes like this. They patch them from the inside, where the mushroom head acts to keep the plug from flying out at speed.

You are not supposed to patch a high performance tire, forget about it.

Patching is OK for tires up to a H or better T speed rating.

I know that especially in the US, tire dealers and even official Porsche dealers recommend patching from time to time but they assume that you don't drive much faster than the legal speed limit. Smiley

Re: Object in tire. What to do?

The speed limit in Canada is around 100km/h on the highways, most people never go over 135km/h. Taking a repaired tire to a track day would be foolish.

Anyway, here's is an article from tirerack:

Re: Object in tire. What to do?

If you're planning on driving below about 125mph on public roads then IMO there's no problem with just repairing it. BUT, it will no longer have the same speed rating.

If you plan on driving faster than around 125mph OR if you put the tyres under greater stress e.g. on a track event, then IMO you should change it.

I've had around 5 punctures repaired and 2 other objects (that didn't go through the tyre) in the past 25 months driving.

Cost and affordability is obviously an important consideration. Some people have no hesitation in paying for a replacement tyre even though the puncture can be easily repaired. They are happy to pay that bit extra for complete peace of mind.

Others are more cost sensitive and prefer to economise a little where they think it's 'safe enough' given the type of motoring they do.

So, it's really your choice. Just my 2 cents.
