This picture doesn't do justice ... New Z4 is very aggressive , front fenders are very wide , so on official pictures its better, and even better in flesh (according to people who have seen it in flesh, I didn't, but only on pictures).
Probably I will order 35i, but later we can expect more powerfull N54 engine (40i ;) ). This one is sDrive35i, because it has titanium kidneys, colour is "Deepsea blue met.," wheels are "Multi spoke:" 8 / 8,5J x 18" - 225/40 R18 88 W / 255/35 R18 90 W , they will be available as an option.
Looks promising. sDrive35i is a good a choice but what is the weight? Specially after following this car for a quite while and observing the lines from the mules, this picture with color and this lighting does not show any contours of the real deal.

If the Z4.2 has all the added weight of a folding metal top it proves the point that BMW don't have a clue about designing sports cars as the last thing needed is unecessary weight, particularly high up Boxster rules again

E89 Z4 sDrive35i got lower weight than current Z4 M. Wait for press release - official data, for comparison test with Boxster and then we will talk if BMW knows how to make good car or not If Im correct old Z4 M is faster than 987S on Nordschleife , so new Z4 doesn't have hard job to beat 987S again
Ferrari California got folding metal top and no one complain about it, despite Ferrari California is much sportier than Z4... Also its likely that later BMW will offer Z4 tii, which will have metal roof (wont be cabrio) and will have lower weight.
Irrespective of Nordschleife times, the Boxster remains far and away the better drive, and by definition that the best sports car is the best drive then the Z4 - any Z4 - becomes below it. When I was considering my first Boxster I had an extended loan for several days of the Z4 3.0i and I thought it was awful. Overly hard ride, artificial steering feel, abysmal visibility down that ridiculously long bonnet, I didn't like the interior layout, storeage room both inside and in the boot was inadequate (important for touring which is what sports cars are all about, surely). If I hadn't had other and far better sports cars previously it would have probably put me off for life. The only good thing about the Z4 was the engine.
Don't get me wrong I'm not anti BMW (I drive a 123d for my daily drive and plan to get a 135i coupe in 2010 when I come down to two cars) but they cannot make sports cars that come even close to what Porsche produce.
I drove Z4 3.0si and Z4 M , both were great. I also drove Cayman S and it was great too. All of them was very nice and fun in corners, but unfortunately I didn't went on track with them. For interior I agree with you, all Bimmers (until new 7 series) are ugly. But I like feeling in Z4's cabin, seats position is very low and you see long hood in front of you. Cayman (same for 987) got nicer interior, its simple but everything is well made.
New Z4 is new chapter and is step forward, exterior and interior design is great, much better than old one. It has some similarities with CS concept... You said Z4 has too hard suspension, this is improved with new Z4 --> (copy paste from broschure): Adaptive M Suspension: Allows the customer to drive a very sporty and comfortable car at the same time offering the flexibility to switch between driving modes. Folding hardtop roof has prons and cons, most negative thing is its weight. But new Z4 got lighter materials than old one, so despite folding hardtop roof, new z4 sDrive35i is lighter than old Z4 M , thats important for me . In Sunday everything will be presented, but tommorow probably we can expect some leak. On paper it looks great , lets hope it will be in flesh and on track too.. Better new Z4 is, better job Porsche will have to do with next Boxster , so that is good for us
