    STRADALE:

This is not a mid or rear engine car (look at the muffler where the engine or transmission would be in a rear or mid-rear engined car).

This is the Coupe version of the Panamera (new 928) with front engine and 4 seats, most likely...

The muffler looks very similiar to how the muffler on a N.A 997 sits, tilted & tucked into the bottom of the rear quarter. Why would it be pushed all the way to the side & hanging down if there wasnt an engine right there sharing the same space?

Also look at what I circled, doesnt that look like the 997 engine/recent Turbo powerplant?

It's hard to be sure, but I think maybe what you circled could be the rear differential.  I'm not positive nor convinced 100% either way...

This may be a dumb question, but I have to ask anyway:

What does the "Lane changes" mean?

Maybe it is just to alert other drivers that this car may make rapid changes to its traffic lane (the fast lane and the slow lane on the Autobahn) .  The turn signals look quite small - maybe they do not work well in that fake bodywork?

OK you guys have almost convinced me, but why not use a Cayenne based mule (front engine) for testing? (as in the famous picture of the flying Cayenne). Or they could even use Panamera mule. It just seems odd to me to disguise what will eventually be a front engined GT car with a rear engined car's body. I know all the secret service theory, but the mare fact that some of us have apparently seen through the ruse with such ease, does not indicate great powers of deception. It just seems like a lot of extra work for nothing.

A year later...what was that? Smiley

Valid points, but you have to bare in mind that we are all hardcore enthusiast. Just look how quick all the automotive blogs were on labelling the car 998 Turbo. The stickers were obviously a deliberate deception for Porsche as they want to play a prank while making us believe that it's a 998 Turbo. And anyone walking on the street would be quick to call the car 911 without being able to do any form of analysis.

Using the Panamera or Cayenne body would instantly have given away that Porsche has something new working in the kitchen. Using the 997 body for a front engined or midengined car isn't impossible as the front end of the mule is much wider and taller than the one on the 997.

In that pic it almost looks like Turbo Cats.

Dunno, but from the pics of the front I find it hard to believe that it could be a front engined car. The combo of the sloped nose (the bonnet looks even more raked then the 997) & very little real estate out front I cant see how an engine would live in front of the cockpit.

You are better at that than me, I tried to make it a bit easier to see with photoshop but I still could not gather anything conclusive either way Smiley lets see if they catch that mule again from different angles Smiley

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

You guys are good. I can't even see how this would be a front engined car. That's why I like this place!

A Panamera Coupe makes a lot of sense. Cheap to develop based on what they already have. The only  question would be performance. How much better than a regular Panamera can it be? Unless they magically erase 500lbs.

Both pictures show the exhaust mufflers which do not cross or go across the rear like in a 911. Instead the mufflers go lengthwise which to me at least indicates a mid-engine. What is in the square on the first photo is not an engine case. You can see by the second photo that it is only about 6-8in deep.

sorry i think you boys are going crazy! a panamera coupe?! impossible, it doesnt have nothing similar with a panamera! unless it will be a panamera coupe with completely other chassis and LINES. NO WAY!! IMHO, ITS JUST A 911 NA 998(or 991 ) the way they did the FALSE AIR INTAKES shows that they wanna makes us think that its the TURBO 997.2 i really think that the new 911 will get a bigger engine, maybe a 8cilinder maybe a 6, and 4 liter i dont know.

Yeah, I guess it could be mid-engined.  I was thinking there wouldn't be room for the transaxle with that exhaust flanking it on either sides, but I guess a transaxle is considerably more narrow than a Boxer motor...

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

Emperor - I see where you coming from, but surely they could use a mule from the upcoming Cayenne II and no one would be the wiser? People would think that they were just testing the new Cayenne rather than the new Panamera Coupe (GT).

Anyway, this is all speculation (but great fun). I really hope that it is a mid-engined GT1 or the new 998 (991). The Panamera Coupe makes a lot of sense from a business point of veiw, but as a sportscar (read Porsche) enthusiast I would prefer to see a new earth shaterring, totally dedicated sportscar.

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

...pretty sure, it´s the next gen. 911.

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

Remember the first pics of the mysterious Special or next gen 911.... they also indicated wider axles (front and back).

They  are also pics around from these days showing boxster mules...same mirrors as above cars (at the side of the door) and wider axles.

When first pics shown from the 2010 Cayenne....the web said also it is the smal Cayenne....which was wrong.

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

If RC gave too muc info already, this means that these are the facts:

    - panamera chassis

    - GT car

    - and it's not the 998

my guess? if it's the panamera chassi, it mesns it's probably a front engine car. If you want a 4 seat GT, you won't be able ti fit the engine in the back, and certainly not in the middle.

    I guess this car a 928 successor, lile a F612.

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

I don't think that it will be a four seater GT. Porsche just dropped the Panamera which give them more liberty to go bananas with proper two seater sports car without compromising performance for practicality. That is why the 998 most likely won't be larger than the 997. Think 599GTB rather than 612.

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

    According to " Auto Bild "  it's next 911 (998)    2011

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

Like I said earlier this is the next 911 (998) not a 928 successor. They are just moving away from the Beetle shape as if it melted and going slightly wider. longer, and lower. I like the new shape. But unfortunately not a 928 ver 2, does not mean they are not building one, but this is not it. (all of this is opinion)

Well, I hope those foglight warts are not final design, because that is the one and only thing that really REALLY bothered me on the 997 turbo...

Me too !   From the day one I couldn't get along with those fog (frog) lights .  I did this "P-shop"  much before GT2  came out .  Not a big problem for any fiber-glass workshop .
