to me it looks just like a ordinary 997 turbo with a new back that is covered to hide the new external goodies for 997.2 turbo. New wing and new lights.... the front looks like any 997.2. Can't this just be that porsche decided to give the 997.2 turbo, gt2,gt3 and the other top-line 997.2 a new rear to differentiate it more from 997.2 carreras?

Yes, the front and especially the rear of the facelifted 997 Turbo are a bit different compared to the current one. There is however no need to drive it around in such a heavy camouflage. Smiley Anyway: it doesn't matter what I say, I could be wrong. Smiley

    Revival of the 928????

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

For me it is just too much camo on this car to be just another variation of the 911. Also every generation of 911 has a totally new car after the facelift of the existing car. See 996 after restyling was a 997, now is the 997.2 so IMO the next car will be the 998 that I think will be a totally new car.

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

I love the prank of fooling everyone with turbo side gill stickers. Gotta give Porsche a thumb up for that one. It definetly looks too big for 911. The 998 will focus on weight saving and more so there is now a negative trend against the steady increase in size that we've seen the latest 20 years. Stricter emission regulations as well as escalating petrol prices means that sports cars will in the near future more more efficient in their petrol use and getting power to the ground. Lastly the Panamera is big and spacious which gives the 911 no reason to increase in size.

I can give you hope, Porsche plans a successor but I have no details yet. I just heard the name "GT1" and this says it all.

Regarding the mysterious 998 picture: have you noticed the turbo side vent STICKER(Carlos mentioned it in an earlier post but apparently nobody noticed).

First of all...so...rear or front engine? Smiley

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

Difficult to say. The front part of the body is wider and taller than the 997 body so an engine can very possibly lay under there. The scrap on the ass can be a deception but can also be the place where the engine lay. If someone could flip the car on it's roof we'd all know=)

I guess what you mean is that an air vent is hidden beneath the fake air vent?

To me, in one of those pics it looks like the lower half is real, a little bit in the style of the 993 turbo s side inlet, but that could also be a mistake because of the reflections of the car... (See attached images for comparison)

omg this could very well be the next GT1... looking at the very last pic of the black mule ( one with yellow arrow to point out mid-engine layout) have at look at the rear part... looks pretty definitive to me... this could be GT1

omg, that means Porsche is on fire.

    So 2009:
    -year of Panamera
    -new boxster/cayman
    -GT1
-new GT3/RS 911 as well as Turbo??

I think that this car is rear engined. They have cut grills into the camo , so something is breathing back there.

Also - I love the way that they have "attached" the front of the current Turbo onto the front of this car (which is substantailly wider).

It would'nt surprise me if this has the 8 cylinder engine that has been rumored to be under development.

If somebody is hoping for a 911 with V8 engine...forget about it, very unlikely.

I alread said more than I should for various reasons, so any further speculation  is pointless until we have more info. Smiley

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

Ok , so no 8 cylinder (not necessarily a v8), but hopefully not Panamera Coupe (unless its rear or mid-engined)

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

an interesting point is the front lip spoiler is a 997tt lip pulled wide to the point that the center is kinked inward/upward - signifying that the car is quite a bit wider than a 997 turbo. I would have to agree that this may be some kind of coupe version of the Panamera and much larger than the 911 platform. The wheels appear to be at least 20" as well - probably from the Cayenne line since nothing like that exists currently for the 997's. That gives another sense of scale.

Another observation is that the front and rear tire widths are not so staggered as on a 911 -  suggesting that the weight balance is closer to a 50/50 distribution car rather than a 35/65 rear engine car

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

eclou , good point on tire widths   Smiley  Head lights are borrowed from 997  and grafted on this mule .  Front fenders are more curvaceus and with biger slope at the front - than 997 .

So if mid-engine, then 2 seat only?

    MKM:

Most likely yes. There is no need for another four seater as the Panamera and Cayenne cater to those needs.

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

IMHO this is the next N.A. 911.

This is not a mid or rear engine car (look at the muffler where the engine or transmission would be in a rear or mid-rear engined car).

This is the Coupe version of the Panamera (new 928) with front engine and 4 seats, most likely...

Re: 998 Turbo - Spy shots Thread Closed

OK you guys have almost convinced me, but why not use a Cayenne based mule (front engine) for testing? (as in the famous picture of the flying Cayenne). Or they could even use Panamera mule. It just seems odd to me to disguise what will eventually be a front engined GT car with a rear engined car's body. I know all the secret service theory, but the mare fact that some of us have apparently seen through the ruse with such ease, does not indicate great powers of deception. It just seems like a lot of extra work for nothing.

The muffler looks very similiar to how the muffler on a N.A 997 sits, tilted & tucked into the bottom of the rear quarter. Why would it be pushed all the way to the side & hanging down if there wasnt an engine right there sharing the same space?

The car looks very small up front, that in combination w/ the sharply sloped hood just doesnt look like it could have an engine in the front. The slope of the hood looks even more rakish then the current 997. Even the front radiators look 911'ish.

Also look at what I circled, doesnt that look like the 997 engine/recent Turbo powerplant?
