As a real enthusiast I feel like I've been lucky enough to see, in person and on track where they belong, some of the finest machinery to come out of Maranello. I'm talking about things like 250 TR, GTO, SWB, Cal Spyder, etc. My question is how can one really be expected to dazzle when compared to some of these machines? The bar for design was set so high that there is no real way for modern Ferrari designers to make something that people are excited about. The comparison will always be there.
Furthermore, I think modern Ferrari designers are simply tring to follow the scheme set forth by their predecessors, Pininfarina, Scaglietti, Drogo, et al, by trying to make the "fastest" shape possible. The GTO was never "styled", its style evolved directly from its function of aerodynamic slipperyness, and little more. I can't fault these people for making the Enzo look the way it does for this very reason. That said, I quite like the 599, not pretty, but it works for me.
