You are absolutely right. Looked from behind, the rear spoiler was the ugliest thing in 996, 997 series...

Fortunately, very few drivers of following cars have the time for a good look Smiley

totally... I always love the clean lines of the 997 but somehow wished the wings will look more like a wing.... think the 991 nails it perfectly! Smiley

It´s a question of taste, never liked spoilers or wings and stuff like that. Porsche always had the need to put those wings on their models, mainely the most powerful ones. F355/360/430/458 and olthers sports cars never had the need to have huge wings on the back to make it planted to road at high speeds, even Lambo didn´t had it(ok only few) I wish Porsche could find the same formula. Anyway this comes from a guy who finds the perfect 911 to be the one with Carrera S look and GT2RS engine inside Smiley this would be my choice by far Smiley

I for one prefer the 997 spoiler solution. The 997 follows a long tradition of moving spoilers in the 911 evolution. Closed, preserves the iconic profile with pure lines. Raised, brings back the 930 tea tray trademark.

I do like the 997 spoiler design and like far less the Turbo solution or what it appears to be what the 991 brings.

Ya but the 991 wing also still goes back into the silouette... I personally love it, it needed to get bigger more serious. Their wide wing is a smart solution and i think it looks very sophisticated and beautiful.

    Yep. I agree. Smiley

I would love a GT3 without the wing. But given the poor aerodynamics of the basic 911 shape...

I like the new spoiler. It must provide an advantage, or it wouldn't be on there. I don't think they would change purely for cosmetic reasons.

indeed... the current spoiler does not provide stability (imho) at high speeds (>250kmph)... a larger spoiler will provide greater downforce and aid in high speed stability. The Porsche GT3 wings are there for a reason. And clearly, the 991 manages to embed a more functional spoiler without spoiling the sloping nice silhouette of the car.

That is pure speculation - the current 997 spoiler is hardly likely to compromise performance at the car's top speed.  The new one, if in fact it is a new one, will be purely for cosmetic purposes..

...absolutely! Sloped tail cars (such as the 911) suffer from lift. They need to have a wing at the back to provide downforce in order to stabilize the car ..especially at higher speeds.

    indeed!

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

the rear wing in the 911 has never been a cosmetic add on, its was fully functional and each 911 update has had improved aerodinamics with greater stability and handling at higher speeds, so we should expect the 991 and its new rear wing to be no different. Wether we like the new design result thats a different matter, personally I was never too fond of the 996-997's rear wing, with the accordeon when up, but I'm still not sure of the looks of the new one yet from the pictures, looks like something you can only really judge in person, but it really is a different design than previous 911 versions so its bound to elicit controversy.

from the spy pics, the wings seems activated by hydraulic actuators.... something like the MP4-12C and Bugatti.

    yes... Smiley

That doesn't mean simply a bigger wing will do a better job or the 997 one does not do the job.  I found it very hard to believe Porsche doesn't put a bigger on 997 if it has a functional need.

I think that you'll find that size, shape, height and angle of the wing all play important aerodynamic roles. The size of the 997 wing is adequate for normal everyday road driving conditions. It does not suffice for serious track conditions. (thus the bigger wings of the GT3's and GT3 RS's - not to mention the RSR  and R racing cars.)

Actually the Carrera movable device is not a wing but a spoiler. It diverts air from following the curve of the back and then going under the car and lifting the rear. It reduces lift but doesn't generate downforce. The GT wings add downforce.

The new 991 device, as seen in the pictures, seems to add some downforce too.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

The Carrera wing reduces lift and doesn't  add down force precisely because it is not big enough to generate palpable downforce (not necessary under most road driving conditions). It is sufficient that it reduces lift.
