Could there be different lights for different 911 models?

Porsche knows the Cayman’s mid-engine arrangement is dynamically superior to the 911’s, but the latter’s rear-engine layout enables usable rear seats. Plus, it helps to create those classic proportions

Do people on this forum feel this statement by Car and Driver is really true -- that the Cayman is   "dynamically superior to the 911"  -- what about the benefits of the added traction -- i have very little experience with a Cayman (and i know some people say that it if it had the same engine it would best the 911) but i still want believe that the 911 is the best iteration (even taking away the added benefit of the back seats).

and the reviews especially lately (autocar's top 5 ever for example) say it beats a mid-engined ferrari 458 which i'm sure is better than a cayman--

just would love to revisit this for a moment because when i read such declarations of the cayman's dynamic "superiority" i feel that the 911 has evolved so brilliantly that it might defy that traditional mid-engine assumption and perhaps even physics?

    thank you

porsche have managed to iron out all deficits of a rear engined car.

actve engine mounts alone are an ingenious idea.

Yesterday, I had the chance to see a camouflaged car from a very close distance and call me crazy but I had the impression that the front lights aren't really round(or oval) shaped anymore. It may be an optical illusion though, the camouflage was pretty dense/thick.

wasn't there a report that after VW took over Porsche that new management saw the finished car and ordered some subtle changes, of which the front lights were one of them. This would explain you seeing one set before and another now...

I hope it was an optical illusion!  If it's true, I don't think they will be 996 style. Looking at it (the spyshots) closely, they look very ovular, which is a good thing.

Shaping up quite nicely.. The fin doesnt look that bad actually

The wheels look too small for the car.. I think it really needs the 20 " ones

Love the lower rocker panel extensions--hope they are standard equipment.  Still not sure I like the jagged line of the rear engine lid, and don't yet understand why it has to hinge in this way.  Seems to break up the smoothness of the rear line sloping down from the rear window...

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

I gather I'm the only one who thinks this looks to be a rather large car, especially for a 911? It seems to me that the 997 stretches the size envelope for a sports car and the 991 is even longer?

Sure. Most chief engineers at Formula 1 teams would kill to make their cars rear-engined; unfortunately, they don't have the budgets/technical abilities/experience to pull it off... Or perhaps, the F1 regulations conspire against them? Ditto in F2 and Indy racing, I suppose.

And, of course, McLaren really, really wanted to make the MP4-12 rear-engined, but their engineers did not feel they really knew how to defy the laws of physics.

Sorry to be flippant about this tired topic. Now, having said the above, I would be the first one to say that outright performance does not necessarily equate with driving enjoyment and/or interesting driving characteristics.

The car looks quite long to me, not bad though.

But what are the panels in the roof (one on the front and one on the back end)?  They are not visibile in the last shoot though...

Round, oval or otherwise, I kind of like the spacing of the headlights. They remind me of this 599:

The 991 will still be smaller than all competitor sports cars so don't cry just yet. Car's a growing, that is very normal.

Notice on the latest spyshots of the coupe, not only is the rear track widened a lot, the front track is too! Just look how wide the front wings are! Also, on the coupe, the glass roof is finally gone!

    2012 Porsche 991 in testing...

    2012 Porsche 991...

The new Porsche 911 will celebrate its premiere at the IAA 2011 in Frankfurt. When auto-motor-und-sport.de the athlete can with the series code 991, the "Erlkönig-shells" falling. It is exciting to see, for the first time show the new Porsche 911 and its convertible counterpart, their new background parts.

And this rear view is clearly from another: The rear window seems deeply moved, a small rump bordered below the cooling air slots from the range of very narrow lights up. clearly seen in sportier ride goes from a wider spoiler.

Overall, the model looks a very compact and much thinner, the wheelbase of the Porsche 911 (991) is growing by about 100 mm and a concession to the American market, which are only used for the consumption levels among other criteria, such as wheelbase and track width. The Porsche 911 is growing by 56 mm to a length of 4.49 meters, while the height shrinks to eleven millimeters.

The lights are back - as shown by the Erlkönig files - something erected vertically. Moreover, given the rearview mirror a new place and are now on the door instead of the window mounted triangle. The air intakes in front of the rear wheels on the Porsche 911 Erlkönig just turn out to be fake and pasted on closer inspection to be. The front apron is based on the current Turbo S, and integrated LED daytime running lights and turn signal bars on the side air intakes.

Also, rumors of active aerodynamic elements, open the air ducts only if necessary. Overall, the new Porsche is 911 (991) Therefore, with shorter overhangs and large wheels in 20 inch format. In addition to the coupe and a convertible Porsche will enrich the 991-series is also a Targa, Porsche Turbo and the GT3. The well-known wheel-drive models will give it back to a few extra euros.

    Diet for the Porsche 911

Was the change of the Porsche 911 series 996 through to 997 only marginal, then the new penalty dare not only look slightly larger small step. The strengthened Boxer engines with 3.4 - and 3.8-liter displacement and direct injection to consume, thanks to start-stop technology around twelve percent less fuel. For the power circuit in the new Porsche 911 is provided by the seven-speed Direct Shift Gearbox, Aluleichtbau for about 45 pounds less weight. The interior is likely to give way to a classic hand brake electronic control device as in the Panamera.

I think that it's just a feature on the 4WD models. The RWD model 997s don't have the rocker panel, and the 4WD ones do.

Listen to the glorious engine note of the 991! There is no sound at the beginning, but at the last seconds of the video, the driver struggles with traction, does a few slides, and hits the rev limiter!
