I'm pretty sure you will see 20" in the opt list.

From the driving behaviour I wouldnt like 20" either. 19" are perfect to me!

At some versions I expect 20" to be standard. Smiley

991 S is developed with 20" wheels. 19" looks way too small and they are not optimum for this sportscar. Period.

Let's cool down from this unsprung weight myth little bit please.Smiley Some people order PCCBs and Adaptive seats-what is weight saving? Zero. I know that many will demur here but, IMHO unsprung weight factor is overrated.

Why do you say this?  Body size is very similar to the 997 - do you think 19" is too small for them also? Smiley

No, body size is not similar to 997. It is bigger car. Wheel archers are much bigger-they are designed for 20" wheels. Also, to repeat-991 S suspension is fine tuned on the Ring with 20" wheels. Enough for me.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

I would expect the "S" versions to come with 20" standard and 19" left for the base model, just like 19" and 18" on the 997, and 18" and 17" on the 996.

That would depend on where you drive your car. If you always drive it on tracks and at the Ring, then maybe 20" is optimum (Do Porsche Cup cars run 20" wheels, btw?)

I don't know how the roads and weather are in Croatia, but here in US Northeast, they're not great, to say the least. Especially this time of the year, with all the potholes and frost heaves from winter weather. For year-round driving, I am happy with 18"...

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

The GT3 Cup, GT3 R and the GT3 RSR all run 18" wheels.

I think the mania for larger and larger diameter wheels on street cars is absurd

They also runs slicks, so have much higher sidewalls.

F1 cars run on 13inch rims and Champ cars on 15inch rims.

Racecar wheel sizes are unrelated to roadcars.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

To be fair, tire sizes on racing cars may  be limited by the formula in question. That's clearly the case for tire width, but I'm not sure about wheel diameter. I vaguely recall reading about a limit on rim diameter in F1, many years ago.

Still, I agree with 964C2; wheel diameters are becoming absurd. What is worse is that car styling (wheel openings in particular) is optimized for these wheels...

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

Indeed, wheel size in F1 is limited by regulation and hasn't been changed in a long time, that is why the wheels are so small in F1 cars still, and allowing a greater diameter would imply unnecessary and extensive R&D costs for the teams in adaping the suspensions and chasis to a different wheel size, so they all agreed to leave it as is.

Tires are a WHOLE lot lighter than metal wheels...

And who-over said that unsprung weight doesn't mean much has never done a back to back comparison. They are just big flywheels that you ahve to spin. does a lighter flywheel make a difference to your engine? It does to your wheels too.

Lots of debate here about larger rims on the new 991.  I am not an expert on unsprung weight or other factors, but i doubt very seriously that Porsche would offer such rims on without extensive testing and consideration for improved performance and safety.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

Interesting if the tyres get a lot wider as well.... At the moment, 911's have 305s in the back, if I am not mistaken..

    991 upgrades to 325's?

SmileySmileyWe have certainly seen enough spy pictures of Porsche testing the 991 over the last two years.

    Saw this on another forum...

"Just got back from Daytona and my 2010 Gt3 in the Porsche corral with my 4 year old. I managed to corner one of the very very higher ups of Porsche motorsport and he was VERY open with 991 info. He saw my car and I started asking him about the 991 GT3 cup and then going on to what he knew about the street car. What he told me is the following.

1.9A1 motor for sure with 480 hp for GT3
    2. PDK-S (he used this term twice) which has been tested with the 9A1 for over 4 years he claims. Surprised
3.Weight loss of 180-200 lbs through use of composites.
4.Aboslutely no hybrid tech.He said specifically it doesnt fit the GT3 motif.
5.Confirmed no more Gt1 (Mezger) block after GT3 RS LE (he confirmed 4.0 RSR motor).
6.Stressed the move of the motor forward essentially making the car a mid-engine car, even though Porsche will never call it one. He says this will make the car more balanced.
I wont say the guy's name but he is in a very high position within P-motorsport. "

not really, i think this is actually a very positive evolution of the 911 series from Porsche.
What is not to like here, less weight, more balanced, faster.

The new engine will be fine, it's been in development for years and years.

PDK will be faster, but as long as they still offer the manual, the world is ok

Reffering to the talk of the new GT3 RS 4.0, it is excpected to come out on April 6th.

Here is a rendering I made of one a while ago.

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

Frankly I don't understand this "mid-engine" terminology for the 991. Is not the engine still over the rear axel, and is this not the definition of a rear engine automobile?  Is not the improved weight distribution due to the lengthening of the wheelbase, as was done in 1969, rather than changing the position of the engine? Doesn't a mid-engine have to be mounted in front of the rear axel by definition? Please enlighten me.

Yes, I think what he was trying to say was that the weight distribution will be very similar to that of a  mid-engined car.

It seems the days of manual cars are numbered.  very sad indeed.

    PDK for GT3??  come on....!?

Re: Porsche 991 GT3 to include GT1 motorsport engine... Thread Closed

Thank you Grant and Spyderidol, the 991 is a rear engine automobile in the 911 tradition.  You know I'm a fan of PDK and I enjoy my 997.2; however, I would be astonished if the 991 GT3 were to be offered solely as a PDK.  The manual transmission must always be a choice offered by Porsche to Porsche buyers. I cannot imagine otherwise.

    911 will remain rear engined.
