I suggest you try a E55 and SL55 and see if the auto tranny feels the same. We owned a ML55, E55 and SLK32. All cars had a great auto tranny. Especially the E55 tranny was wroking nicely but also the SLK32 tranny. The ML55 tranny worked nice after around 50000 km...a software bug (which actually needed a reset) improved shifting, as funny as this may sound. My mechanic knew of this "problem" but he suggested to leave it this way if I'm happy. The only downside: apparently the emissions control was affected, so I wouldn't have passed emissions testing.
I drove a SLK55 the same day it was out on the market and actually liked the Speedtronic, it didn't feel much different than the other AMG auto trannies.
The only thing I didn't like was the fact, that the SLK55 actually felt less sporty than my wife's former SLK32, a pretty surprising experience. This is also one of the major reasons we went for a Boxster S instead. My wife didn't want too (soft top, too loud) but ask her now, she would KILL anybody who tries to take the Boxster S away from her.

    RC,
I noted that the later software revisions of the C32 software felt less sporty than the original MY2002 software. They smoothed out the shifting a bit and the upshifts in the lower gears felt especially more "soft". Perhaps AMG tuned the software a bit differently for later models due to complaints. I had a transmission problem and they upgraded the car to the '03 ECU, which I did not like as much.

The E55 autobox works quite well for the car. Feels more natural than the equivalent BMW autobox. Though, if you say it acts similarly to the 997 Tiptronic, I'm not sure I'd want it. Seems to take a bit of edge out of the driving experience, even if I would be faster with the Tip.

Will the 997TT Tip have better rev-matching while downshifting? The AMG software upshifts reasonably fast, and reacts to input to downshift quickly in most cases, but sometimes I feel there is too much compression experienced. It was worse in my C32. In the 3-2 for example, you have to wait for a while at high revvs for the car to become settled.

What will be intriguing to learn is how relevant/irrelevant shift times/gearing will be for cars w/450++ lb-ft at 1800RPM, like 997TT and 65s. My only gripe w/997TT Tip is the lack of paddle shifters, to more ergonomically play w/the gears. However, will extensively test-drive a colleague's '07 S65 (5-speed AMG SpeedShift w/paddle shifters) upon its July arrival....and will determine whether I can find any settings where paddle-shifters are preferred from either a "feel" or timing standpoint vs letting Tip select gears itself (in networked coordination w/ESP/PSM/PTM/eAWD, etc etc), esp in a high-torque, software-rich car like 65/997TT.....

I did not know the Tip is without paddel/button shifters. I could have sworn that I saw a pic somewhere on that. BTW the new paddles on the AMGs replace the buttons, but they are still attached to the steering wheel and not to the column. It is easy to get them confused with very tight turns as the upshift can be on the other side of the wheel. Ask me how I know.

BINGO! Found it. There are shifter buttons on the wheel.
Just as confusing as the AMG, only different. Plus button (+) on top and downshift button (-) on bottom. But that is only with the wheel pointing straight ahead. Shuffle the wheel in a tight turn and WHOOPSIE!

    Re: Tiptronic!

it HAS SHIFTER BUTTONS ON WHEEL +/-

    Re: Tiptronic!

997TT Tip has the shifter buttons on steering wheel, as does 996TTS Tip....but I find shifter buttons on steering wheel utterly useless ergonomically (and prone to accidentally being activated during brisk driving in twisties)....have had two 996TTS Tip Coupes and a 997S Tip, so I despise the button approach (as I did on the two SL55s I had prior to becoming a Porsche addict).

Though I prefer the F fixed paddle shifter approach, I'd rather have paddle shifters on steering wheel than the Tip buttons.... ...what's really difficult to keep oriented is for guys accustomed to F paddle shifters, who drive 65s for daily commuting (I have 3-4 colleagues who will be driving '07 65s daily and have 430/599 as wkend cars)....

I agree. The buttons are ergonomically inferior to paddles.

    Re: Tiptronic!

Pure speculation; what if the PDK turns out NOT to be faster than the Tip? They are still updating the egear software on the Gallardo I think.

maybe the answer to that is delaying PDK till the 998 model so that wont be an issue.

Wouldn't count them out of it, no?

    Re: Tiptronic!

I can't see Porsche introducing a new, revolutionary gearbox like PDK and having it perform below older technology. The PDK will be at least as fast as, if not faster, than the Tip.

in "auto mode" im sure it would be as fast as tip

    Re: Tiptronic!

Guys we're also forgeting one important thing here! Although i have ordered manual/lsd on my launch car, and I love driving and actually shifting my car. I will say the tiptronic is far far superior to the manual transmisson in one respect... and in two words. Road head.

    Lets' face it

the slippery slope of auto electronics is leading us to a place where our great-grandchildren will not be able to imagine a world where people actually piloted cars on their own. 40,000 deaths a year in the U.S. will be eliminated AND you will be able to talk, eat and put on make-up without any concern while your whisked on your way to your destination. Fortunately I'll be dead by then.

    Re: Tiptronic!

great write up.. thanks for that.

    Re: Lets' face it

You didn't see IRobot where the Audi had both options... Duh
