Build quality issues with my 430.

I love the car but I am beginning to question whether hand built is the way to go.

My driver door was misaligned causing it to scratch my CF door sill and paint, my hood was misaligned causing it to scratch my hood edge paint and there are some unusual looking gaps in the front bumper (really only noticeable when I am washing the car).

The interior is beautifully crafted except they used too much lubricant to install the air vent ducts causing the lubricant to leak on to the leather around the vents and staining it.

All of this has been repaired but for a car worth over $225,000 it should not happen. I did not experience any of this with my 430 coupe and I am wondering whether they are rushing the production of these cars.

Re: Build quality issues with my 430.

    Possibly. No problems here.

I give you credit Nick for admitting to these problems with your Ferrari. I agree that for a vehicle of this price that these problems should not happen. I wonder if others have had similar problems or not. Hopefully, you won't have any further problems..

Re: Build quality issues with my 430.

No problems with mine. That must be frustrating.

Gary - How have you been enjoying your new ride? Any track experience yet? Care to offer any comparisons to your former 360? Photos would be cool too!

    Thanks!

    nick,

is the vehicle tagged with the name of the prospective owner during production?

what about posting some pics of the new 430?

Re: Build quality issues with my 430.

    nberry,
Mine is a 3/2005 built berlinetta. Rear bumper is slightly
misaligned, the gap to the fenders on the left is 1mm larger than the right side. The combination lamp (2nd from right) sits 2mm higher than the other side. Right above the tail pipes on the right, the paint is peeling off (2.5cm3). All of those the dealer/importer here in Japan agreed to rectify under warranty. But true, these kind of things should not happen. Oh, check engine lamp came on. This I suspect was caused by the Kreissieg exhaust system (I changed the cat-pipes as well)

So you are not the only one experiencing these imperfections.

Re: Build quality issues with my 430.

    Nick,
In all honesty, the ferraris as you know better than me have improved a ton, but still the consistency isnt there, one will be meticulous, the next kinda shoddy....I agree, its unnacceptable, you really should have no guilt/hesitation making the dealer fix this, you paid a lot!

Re: Build quality issues with my 430.

Everything is fine with mine !

I would sell it, take the profit and buy the 599GTB ...

The F430 is really a significant upgrade over the 360. It does everything better, from more power and torque to more initial compiance over rough roads to better interior materials and finish. I must say I haven't gotten around to measuring the whole car to see if everything lines up within a few millimeters, but it is satisfying to the eye. I'll be tracking the car a few times this year, but haven't gotten out yet. I have upgraded the brake pads in anticipation of track work. All in all, this is the best car I have ever owned, and a very complete and polished package.

I think its a question of quality assurance. Even if they were rushing production, all this should have been caught before it left the factory. I would make a big stink with Ferrari itself on how they would let a car with these obvious defects leave the factory.

Every manufacturer has cars make it to the consumer with issues that should have been fixed before release, that's why there are lemon laws, which Porsche owners among others have used to rid themselves of troublesome cars. My limited experience with Ferrari (2004 360 Modena and 2005 F430 Coupe, both purchased new) indicates build quality and detail control at least equal to Porsche, Mercedes, and BMW.
