See? you guys really had no love for the front engine cars.

That's so cool, this one I have been drooling over it too... did you get it for under 35k?!

    Whoopsy:

The car is question is a 968 Convertible. (Told you guys it will be an odd duck!) Porsche only sold 55 of them total in Canada during 1992-1995.

The 968 turbo might also be of interest then. Of course, the car is also quite rare. From what I hear the turbo feels special though Smiley

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

968 Smiley , for an old front engine Porsche 928 is the one to have Smiley although the 968CS was a very special car at time,  it´s a 4 cilinder engine Smiley

Quite surprised about your choice, Nick. I would´ve guessed you go for a 928, alternatively for a special edition four-cylinder model such as 924 Carrera GT, 968 Turbo/Turbo S etc.

It´s a nice choice though considering that those cars are somewhat ignored by the Porsche enthusiast although they have great handling and balance.

... I just don't get the love of old and by now smelly cars.yes

Neither do I. I get collecting, but not for driving.

I also like modern safety features, to which I have become well accustomed.

The older I get, the less nostalgic I become.  In my amateur radio hobby, I am excited by modern equipment without the dangers of yesteryear.  50 volts D.C. for power supplies instead of many thousands of volts seems safer and less worrisome.

I really like modernity of equipment.

Smiley Used an illegal 1 kW amp with my CB radio and a 5/8 antenna outside the regular 27MHz band for over five years and drove the local authorities crazy (some sort of cat and mouse game, they even came at night and I was only 12-17 at that time Smiley, parents supported me because I was really good with tech and it helped with my English). Oh I miss my old Sommerkamp radio and the other various equipment from that time.

    Mithras:

The 968 is one of the most balanced cars ever made. Not hugely fast but a joy to drive at the car's (as opposed to your)  9/10th's.

The same goes for a 914, and anyone that builds a really good one and can drive half a lack will utterly humiliate most modern cars. Mine has 280ish hp, weighs about 1900lbs and is faster than a 996 cup car.

    engine spec?

2.5ltr short stroke (89x66). Twin plug, Electromotive. P&C's (were NOS) came from Bruce Jennings IMSA GTU cars. I think they're around 11.5:1.  Case is an early aluminium one with everything done to it. Custom grind cam that's a bit hotter than a stock S but not as hot as a 906. Ti rods etc. Can't remember what the heads are but they had a whole lot of work done to them.

912 was my first car ever, first P I could afford as a 20 year old. Pretty thing but that engine always had that beetle sound and power. No fun.

Very cool - Is the redline around 8.5k?  That is a very short stroke (which was very short for the stock 2.0L even)

That's as high as I take it. Makes peak power with that cam around 7800 or so if I remember right. It revs faster than the 3.0 litre in my picture but not as high. Then again that 3.0ltr was a beast.Smiley

It USED TO BE mine.  I sold it and a 996 Turbo coupe and a BMW 320 ex-McLaren race car and the 962 in my avatar to raise cash to buy a Carrera GT back in the day.

Thanks, Carlos.  It is Signal Orange, indeed.

No I didn't buy it. Read further up on posts.

They took it down probably because they realized it is not a good example. Only lipsticks and mascara. All the body panels were badly prepped and repainted. We stopped there even before checking the engine health.

But I am working on something else that someone here and I had mentioned before.\

Hopefully I can close it before flying off to Europe.

Ah ok, sorry to hear that you've lost some time on that one... but you never know until you do the in-depth checks.. sounds like you did your homework and wisely backed out kiss I do that quite a lot actually, since a lot of older cars have many problems (owners try to hide them) but for me it is the hunt that's fun also

So I plugged the 918's 4.6L engine into his equations. it came out to 122.2HP/L just piping the 458 Speciale's 121.3HP/Lsmiley

Basically, it's the best civilian engine out there not counting racing engines.

Re: 918 latest news Thread Closed

So I did the calculations for the P1 and the LaFerrari too.

The LaFerrari's 6.3L V12 ended up at 115.6HP/L while the P1 only getting 86HP/L, and it was converted to the equivalent of a 9 liter NA engine. P1 runs a 8.1:1 compression and 1.4bar of boost.

For comparison, the 991.2 Turbo S, at 3.6L and 580HP, converts to a 7.8L flat 6 and resulting in 74.8HP/L

Aaron, a boosted engine will never have the 'efficiency' of a NA engine. It's only efficient on paper because of the smaller capacity and at government test cycles they ran the off boost map, that combines with a low compression ratio makes the engine drinks a lot less fuel than they really are when testing.

But this video shows you that a boosted engine is actually cheating, at full power output, they eat fuel like a much bigger engine. The P1's 3.8L V8 is actually drinking fuel like a 9L V8 at full power. (the fuel consumption part is pretty linear with the amount of air going in. so one can safely interchange)

Absolutely agree with this statement, I find this whole downsizing trend ridiculous. My wife's Alpina B3 makes 410hp from a biturbo 3.0l, a relatively small engine for the output, yet that thing drinks fuel like nothing I've experienced before. My GT3 actually drinks less fuel, hell even my 5.0l V8 Benz drinks less and that's a 4-speed automatic sedan from 1992.

Truly ridiculous we might lose N/A engines because of a test cycle that doesn't bear any resemblance to real life driving. Smiley
