Replacement of Exhaust as per recall

I don't know if I am crazy or what ?, but since they changed the exhaust tips, the car sounds much better, maybe is the same as before and maybe is just wishfull thinking, or maybe I am indeed crazy !!!!!!!

Re: Replacement of Exhaust as per recall

Nope, not crazy, mine sounds better too! Almost to the point where I'm thinking of not bothering retrofitting PSE

    ...almost!

Re: Replacement of Exhaust as per recall

Are you serious? Shouldn't it sound more or less the same as before? I can't imagine how an exhaust tip make all the difference, can someone please explain?

Re: Replacement of Exhaust as per recall

    No idea why!!

It just sounds louder, has a better clarity, and the note is sweeter (and it was pretty good before).

Plus the shinny new chrome tips look gorgeous!!

Re: Replacement of Exhaust as per recall

OK have we been smelling to many exhaust fumes?

Re: Replacement of Exhaust as per recall

WOW! Verrrrrry interesting. I'm looking forward to a recall now?! Thanks for the excitement.

Re: Replacement of Exhaust as per recall

I'm sure they are replaced with the standard tips and not the chrome plated ones. The replacements just don't have all the soot build up that the old ones did.

Please explain the basis for the soot build-up implications.

Re: Replacement of Exhaust as per recall

I mentioned this in another post. I'm glad someone else thinks the same thing! My C2S is without a doubt louder..

And you're right. They don't get so dirty as the old ones.

Re: Replacement of Exhaust as per recall

Mine is in the shop for the recall. I would have procrastinated the visit, but another mishap over the weekend prompted it. My 4-year-old daughter accidentally dropped her "Razor" electric-powered dirt bike on the rear bumper of my car, thoroughly trashing the paint, and (to add insult to injury) exploding the plastic compartment housing the throttle wiring, and yanking all the wiring apart. So, my car is at the dealer with the bumper cover removed (I hauled the cover to the body-shop for repair/refinish), and her little motorcycle is at the certified Razor repair center getting repaired LOL!!! While the bumper cover is off, I'm having them do the recall on my exhaust tips. My stomach is in knots waiting to see how well they finish my bumper cover, and how well the paint matches. Black is one of the worst to match. You'd think that "black is black", but it's far from the truth. My shop has a computerized dupont mixing machine with all the factory formulas loaded in it, and I instructed them to manually test-spray and tint as-needed for a perfect match in the sunlight. We'll see. I have longstanding and well-founded skepticism for body shops.

Why me?? Why not one of those guys who couldn't detect a respray if it were applied with a broom??

With good reason along with other garages/dealers in general from my experience. I had one main Fiat dealer (Fiat Coupe, looked better than it drove) who decided to deliver the car back to me after a service by driving it along several thorny hedges, completely ruined the side of the car. Another Alfa dealer (GTV, so unreliable - but replaced with a Boxster so there was a happy end) repairing a water leak who used a hose with a metal end to find/test the leak. Strange how a metal pipe fitting would scratch the paintwork... Then you have to go through the argument with them about yes, it was you who scratched my car. Assume Cretin status until proved otherwise. Rant over.

Alex - I'm still waiting for PSE to become available again (still on back-order according to the OPC), so decided to have the re-call done today. My immediate impression is that it now sounds QUIETER than with the old tips.

Maybe more refined, but that's not what I'm looking for. Will definately get PSE as soon as possible!! Please let us know when your OPC takes delivery - I will do the same.

Re: Replacement of Exhaust as per recall

It does seem a bit quieter with the new tips (rather than louder). Don't really like it.

Maybe it's that I had chrome tips replaced?! No idea...

My stock exhaust was reputed by the OPC guys as being louder than most other 997s for some reason. So maybe it's a combination of the recall sweetening the note and the already guttural stock exhaust that makes it sound better and more noticeable?!

My PSE retro-fit plans are on hold for now, maybe later in the year. The cheapest I could haggle OPC Reading down to was 1700GBP ish. That was only after supplying them with the TSB stating the labor should be 330TU (3.3 hours), not 6 as previously quoted! You would have thought the UK Porsche Headquarters would have known this...

Re: Replacement of Exhaust as per recall

    Alex,

Instead of forking out Pounds1700, why don't you pop across the Channel for the day. It's Pounds30 on P&O ferries each way and get the job done at an OPC in either France, Belgium or Holland. Labour rates are MUCH cheaper over there. You'll save money, have a nice day out on the Continent and come back with a smile on your face every time you hear the PSE roar!

I plan to use OPCs on the Continent for any major servicing etc costing more than Pounds300 because the trip will pay for itself.

Re: Replacement of Exhaust as per recall

Had my exhaust recall replaced the other day. yes, it does have a less raspy but finer and seems louder sound. But yes, it could also be the fumes we're breathing!. I drive with my windows open most of the time.
They also replaced minor recall stuff like hood bolts, shifter bracket. Oil filler hose also on the list but they didnt hve the replacement part. So, maybe next time at 20k service. I now have 11k on the clock but went ahead with an oil and filter change.

Re: Replacement of Exhaust as per recall

This is one for the UK based guys (and gals if there are any on here) amongst us.

Those who have had the recall work done... which OPCs were willing to do you a free upgrade to chrome tips?

Just booked mine in with Swindon / Dick Lovett and they're not willing to do it for me

Re: Replacement of Exhaust as per recall

I had mine done 2 weeks ago. Waited only 30 minutes and they washed the car and toped off the fluids. I think either we are all going crazy or the car sounds louder. Mine sounds racier when I get on it. But then again it could be all in my head.

I had new Chrome tips fitted with my recall at OPC Reading, but I did have the Chrome tips option in the first place!

Seems a shame given I will be having the whole lot replaced in a few weeks for a PSE upgrade... maybe I'll put the relatively new chrome tips on ebay!

Re: Replacement of Exhaust as per recall

Had mine done last week, and *defintitely* sounds louder to me - and to my wife, who commented on it independently, not knowing that the exhaust was modified.

Re: Replacement of Exhaust as per recall

What was the recall. I got my car in late January. Hopefully it was already done
