Oh well, now that I think about it, there are some cantons here in Switzerland which auction their free low number plates from time und time (we don't have any customization, just numbers). For specific numbers, the prices go beyond CHF 10K occasionally too.

There's a pretty blonde driving a VW Bettle near where I live with the plate M1JFF which always raises a smile.
The world record is something like HK$13million (>US$1M).
