    Buying out of warranty 996

    With the price of 3.4 996 falling to within my reach, I started checking out a few 99-00 996. However I always have a serious doubt on if if is wise to do so because of RMS. So posts suggested that as much as 25% (or higher) of 996 are affected. It almost sounds like I will have to deal with this problem (if I buy a 996) if I plan to keep my Porsche for a long time.

    Does anybody know how much it is to change the seal(s). Or worst case replace the engine? I lived in Canada so experiences from US/Canada will be much appreciated. Also, has the latest fix (I think it is something along the line of a Cayenne seal) finally eliminated the problem?

    Because of RMS, I almost think that I should stick with my original plan: look for a good 964 or 968. Any comments.

    Have the car inspected and if it has a RMS leak find out what a normal RMS replacement costs in your area and deduct that from the sellers asking price, then you're covered.
    Chances are that if a higher mileage car is not leaking now, it probably won't in the future.

    Do the 996's have issues with the Rear Main Seals leaking? Is there any other known issues?

    The RMS issue on the 996 has been blown out of proportion and common sense, IMO. Historically, the 996 engine has been one of the more reliable engines in Porsche's history.

    Have a PPI (Pre-Purchase Inspection) done at a Porsche dealer and also ask them to print up the warranty history on the car. The PPI will uncover anything your really want to know and I would never buy a used Porsche without one!

    The RMS problem seems to have been resolved with the latest version of the seal Porsche has come out with. I haven't heard of any reoccurences after getting the new seal. It usually runs about $800-1400 depending on the dealer to fix it.

    PPI may not uncover everything and some delaers may not want to perform the inspection for fear that an undetected or undetectable fault will expose them to some liability when the problem manifests itself.

    RMS is about an 800$ job, I think the benefits of a 996 far outweigh any imagined pitfalls.

    Agreed. On the internet it seems you here more about people complaining about their cars than praising them. If you have the funds, go for it, the 996 is an absolute blast too drive. Good luck with whatever you choose.

    I just finished PPI and closed a deal on a 968. MY93 coupe 6 spd (of course) with 75000KM. Absolutely beautiful car. Will wait until end of March to pick it up (have to clean up my garage now). Can't wait.

    At the end, it really comes down to money. The price of a 968 is very affordable and leave me lots of $$ to enjoy other things in life but it is still a blast to drive.

    I had mine done - Porsche has developed a new seal that works, HOWEVER oil was leaking in a closed area - the Clutch must be replaced. They have to remove the transmission to replace the RMS. Now is the time to replace the clutch!!!

    Owning any car out of warranty is a risk.
