Re: Teen age girl and new 997S'

Well put, I agree with almost everything that was said.

I was a couple of years older than the teenage girl when I was given the 996 Turbo. Believe me when I say the gesture was (and still is) very much appreciated. I had NO tickets, accidents, etc, so one can't generalize and state that every teen will automatically get killed if he or she is given a high performance car.

A few years went by and I was able to purchase my 997S. Was it less of an event because I didn't have to put my way through schools, cars, etc? No, it was not. In fact it was extremely satisfactory!

Re: Teen age girl and new 997S'

no one generalized that every teen will automatically killed, did they? There are plenty of 16-20 year olds who would be safer then many of the older Porsche drivers. But statistically, young drivers are more prone to accidents. One's perception on giving a teenager a car like that might change when one is old enough to have a teen. I'm not sure I am convinced that being given something that costs close to $100,000 USD is comparable to earning it...both big thrills I am sure, but not the same. By the way, how do parents top the gift of a Porsche? A Ferrari, a house? Someone adopt me...my driving record is spotless and I promise I will drive a new 997 turbo within the speed limit.

I'm sure driving a 997 turbo within the speed limit is not going to be a very easy promise to keep!!

Re: Teen age girl and new 997S'

Mom and Dad (I know they read this forum) why didn't I get a Porsche??? Would it have been that hard to mortgage your home and go without a little food! You both could have gotten another job and easily put away the money. I think they were only about $30-40,000 back then. Never mind...you can still make up for it. Please try to cut back on your heart meds and eatting out for diner all the time. You can at least try to leave enough money for me in your estate...yea, you can still get me that Porsche I always wanted, the turbo, I'll make due with the S til then.

Re: Teen age girl and new 997S'

Let me top your story; I was at the Porsche/Bently dealer, an 18 year old obnoxious SOB wlaked in with his dum a$$ parents and purchased a black Bently CGT. The kid asked for dark tinted windows (after market) but the sales manager advised against it as it's illegal in CA. The mom told the little $hit, honey go with a lighter shade. The kid turned around and yelled, F....you mom, one little thing I ask for and this is what I get? Can you imagine, what goes on in some of these dysfunctional families. I would have disowned that kid

LoL - sounds almost unreal - like a scene from a daily soap.
Well, I guess the "dumba$$ parents" as you call them correctly, mustn't complain, because they deserved that kid

    Crazy stuff isnt it!
Saw this programme on the MTV channel called "My sweet 16" or something. Basically about parents throwing huge parties for their kids when they turn 16. The girl featured wanted a Range Rover and told her dad that she'd not speak to him again if he didn't buy it for her. What happened in the end? He bought her it of course.
    Sigh....

oh, and by the way, the party cost about a quarter of a million bucks!

Re: Teen age girl and new 997S'

Well, I don't have time to read all the posts, but..

    1. Yeah, it's silly to give a new driver something that nice/expensive, as she can't really appreciate what the 911 is truly "about".

    2. Hell, compared to the DEATH TRAPS me and all my pals drove in high school, I would consider a new 997S as an immensely safe car. A 997S doing 140 is immensely more in-control, easier and faster to stop, and more capable of avoidance, than a ragged-out Ford Escort doing 98 mph, on three bald tires and one re-cap, with brakes that pull hard to the left, and ball joints that haven't seen a dollop of grease in 100,000 miles.

Let's face it, everybody gets worked up when they see a kid in an expensive and fast car. But at least that expensive and fast car has a chance of avoiding impending disaster, through superb grip and control. MOST kids you see driving around, are in cars easily capable of triple-digit speeds, and are total JALOPIES.

When I was in high school, it was the kids that had nicer cars that seemed to get "over" the whole driving like a lunatic thing faster. It was the kids driving total hunks of sh**, that their parents should never had allowed out of the driveway, that had only one speed, pedal to the metal, everywhere they went.

Don't worry about a little girl in a 355 h.p. Porsche with ABS, multiple air-bags, brakes that can warp your skull, and grip that can steer around just about any mishap.

Worry about the little punk in the souped-up Honda with over 200,000 miles on the clock, every suspension underpinning within a speed-bump from failure, with a home-made nitrous kit, bald tires, and brakes that are only half-functioning.

All kids drive like nuts. I'm more worried about the ones driving hunks of crap that are unsafe for the highway, at any speed, that could come careening toward me at any moment. Those are out there at an easy 100-to-1 ratio compared to kids in high-end premium cars.

Re: Teen age girl and new 997S'

We have familys coming into buy their kids Porsches all the time in South Florida. There was a 16 year old who received a GT2 for his birthday. There are times when this is crazy, but I remember one that I thought was pretty cool...I received a call to order a Boxster when they first came out, it took 9 months to get his Boxster and he moved from the east coast to the west. When we ordered his car, I called to get the titleing information and was surprised to reach his mother. When I explained why I was calling she knew all about the order and she would have her son call me when he returned home from school. I told her that I also needed his drivers license and inquired what college did he attend and she replied that he was in high school and did not have his license yet. This threw off alarms because he had to be 18 year old licensed driver and I told her so. She said that they would put the car in his fathers name and take him down to get his license when he turned 16. She also stated that her son was very mature and had made his own money by an inheritence from his grandmother and investing in the stock market. They told him he could buy whatever he wanted with the money he earned. Let me tell you he could have bought any car we sold with that money he had...yet he bought the Boxster. This is one case where I think it was ok for a 16 year old to buy a Porsche

Re: Teen age girl and new 997S'

I think its not a case of money its just that it is not advisable for any learner to drive such vehicles , specially the immature . Its provocation imo ..

You can kill someone in a VW Beetle but are more likely to cause harm to yourself or others in a fast car. If my old man bought me a 911 when I was 16 I would have been very very happy BUT, I probably would have hurt myself - I was a stupid little bastard when I was 16! I got behind the wheel of a Porsche 944 (my own efforts) and every single time I could I thrashed the hell out of the car!

Re: Teen age girl and new 997S'

Well, I'm kinda the other side of that coin. I drove a 1969 GT350 in high school. It wasn't as fast as my 997S, but, it wasn't exactly slow either. But you know what, it tought me real quick to respect speed, and to keep my head on straight. I also did some crazy things in that car, and managed to survive them all by keeping it between the lines more-or-less. But anyhow, it all depends on the KID, as I had friends in school with SCARY-FAST drag cars (60's muscle cars with no handling, lousy brakes, and unreal acceleration) that drove them very respectably and carefully. They were mature kids, good kids.

Then I had friends driving hand-me-down Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight sedans that would drive like helions EVERYWHERE they went.

In high school, it didn't have to be fast to be dangerous. It just had to roll.

I try not to judge. I'm sure alot of people judged me incorrectly when I was in high-school. Growing up, by nature, is dangerous business. You do alot of foolish stuff, behind the wheel, and not. I felt that my "access" to high-powered machines from an early age taught me to repect them from an early age as well. Far better that, then putting me in a Chevette Diesel through high-school, only for me to graduate college, buy the first fast car I can afford, and kill myself, not having the slightest bit of groundwork built dealing with the RESPONSIBILITY of having a fast car.

Re: Teen age girl and new 997S'

I agree with the boss, it is a case by case basis. My point in the story I told was that this young man was already mature beyond his years. His decision making process was better than many 30 year olds, including me when I was 30. Take Gunner Jennette, he was racing at Daytona with Paul Newman at 17 years old. He could handle a Porsche better than probally anyone of us here at Rennteam. Most of the time I do think that a 16 year old should never have a car like this, but I can not say any 16 year old should never have a car like this.

Re: Teen age girl and new 997S'

I'm new to this forum as I have only recently, at 26, reached a point in my life where I am financially able to seriously consider the purchase of a Porsche (though I have my sights set on a 993 rather than a 997). I guess I have to group myself with those for whom the ownership of such a car has been a lifelong goal reached only through hardwork. For me the concept of a 16 year old being given that, which for me has required many years of education and numerious financial sacrifices and risks, does rub me the wrong way.

However, when I get beyond my own jealousy, I must admit that there is some logic to ensureing that your kids are in a safe, reliable, good handling car (though not one with 355hp). When I got my license at 17 the first car I bought myself was a old Jeep Cherokee with 180,000 plus miles on the odometer. It was plenty fast to get me killed and had absolutely horrid brakes, bald tires, no airbags or functioning safety equipment, no seatbelts, and handled like, well, and old ass Jeep with bald tires. However for some reason my dad felt I was much safer in it than in his BMW 535i because it only had 160hp vs. the BMWs ~250hp. I think his logic here was flawed.

Personally, when I have kids old enough to drive I think a modern sports car or sports sedan is probaly what I am going to give them. Once I outgrew my Jeep, I became a sports car/sports sedan fanatic, owning several miatas, and E30 BMWs. I took up autocross, went to a driving school and became a better and much safer driver. I learned how to really handle a car, pull out of a slide, etc. I think a 3-5 year old 325i or a Miata would make a great first car for a teenager, especially if you could really get them excited about true performance driving (at the track/autocross course) rather than Fast and Furious street antics. Hopefully, the father of that 16 year old has something like that in mind with this purchase, and has not simply given in to his daughter to buy her love.

Is "disowned" being used here as an euphemism for "beat the crap out of"?
Probably not in this politically correct age, unfortunately.

Re: Teen age girl and new 997S'

Well with the social services I think beating the crap out of the kid would only make things worseand you will end up spending 10 times more than what you spent on the Bently. Plus I am not the type to beat up kids, although I have never had any kids. So easier said than done, I would tell him make sure the door does not hit you in the a$$ on your way out of my house

Re: Teen age girl and new 997S'

By the sound of it and at 18 he should have had his arse kicked ages ago . So his gone from a ""little s**t"" to a ""big s**t"" , nice lad..

Re: Teen age girl and new 997S'

let me guess, she got an automatic......

    I have two kids...

...my girl is five, my son is two, they both love cars and it shows. My little girl even knows the various Porsche models, she even recognizes Ferraris (we went to a Ferrari day once and she was overwhelmed with that many red toys... ). Her dream car is a red Cabriolet, no matter if Porsche or Ferrari. Guess what...she'll never get it. Why? For several reasons I don't want to elaborate right now but one major reason is: I love my kids and I don't want them to die in a damned car.

Yes, I'll buy them a nice car when they're 18, no doubt about it. Not because I want to spoil them but because I don't want them to drive with other people around in their (unsafe? too fast?) cars. I also want to teach them early how to drive in a responsible way and to learn how to avoid/handle dangerous situations. No, no Porsche and no Ferrari. But something little and something pretty safe. Maybe something their friends want to drive in, so I'm sure my kids wouldn't drive with other people in other cars.
Once somebody knows how to really drive, he'll never feel safe with somebody else driving. I'll buy them something cool but not something too fast. Something nice but nothing they would want to race. I know it sounds simple and I know it isn't. I also know that I'll have a hard time explaining to my kids why I'm driving 500+ HP monsters and they can't. I know it will be difficult and there will be shouting, crying and disappointment at a certain point. I don't care. I want my kids to live, not to die in a car. Buying a 16-18 year old a powerful car is irresponsible, sorry to say that. Buying a 16-18 year old a 2.5 ton Cayenne Turbo is irresponsible too, even more than buying a Corvette or a Boxster. DO NOT trust your kids, guys. I was a kid myself and if my parents would have known what I did in my cars, they would have died of a heart attack long before. I'm not kidding. Parents who trust their kids are STUPID. I speak from experience, from my youth and from experience with my friends. None of us told our parents the full truth, especially not about stupid things. No, I never was into drinking, smoking or even drugs, thanks god. But I was driving like a maniac at age 18-23, it is a miracle that I'm alive and that I didn't kill anybody else.

So PLEASE listen to me: if you love your kids, don't give them weapons in their hands. It is like giving them a loaded gun and waiting for them to shoot themselves or somebody else. I know that some people at younger age will hate me now for saying this but as much as a 18 year old wants to tell me that he is driving within the normal speed limits, I doubt it. Let some friends be with him/her in the car, let some drinking be involved, let some other people provoke them (a rice burner standing next to them at the red light), etc...and I bet that ANY 18 year old looses his self-control and goes for it. This is HUMAN, this is NORMAL for that kind of age.

I bought my first Porsche at age 31. Yes, I would have loved to own one at age 18. I was lucky enough to have wealthy parents, so all my cars were pretty powerful starting with age 18. But my parents were dumb, sorry to say that. At age 20 I was driving a Lancia Delta Integrale, a car which 20 years ago(!) easily outran any Ferrari or Porsche out there, especially the version I drove with 280 HP (tuned by AM Motorsport/Holzer, incl. water injection, etc.). My parents had no clue what this car was capable of, luckily I started professional racing in the group N in this car and I somehow gathered experience "in the field". Otherwise, I'm pretty sure about it, I would be dead by now.

Sorry, kids...no vroooomm, vroooom from this daddy...but a nice little car you don't have to be ashamed of.
