    With ESP off, the R8 is a disaster in my opinion. Don't have a clue why Audi did that, probably to satisfy those who want a "raw" track experience. Big mistake. However, even with ESP left turned on, you can barely feel the ESP working, very good setup.

    Are you referring to the last Chris Harris comparison with the NSX?

    I was referring to the first review where he was upset with the various settings of the R8.

    Dynamic steering seems to be a "love it" or "hate it" story. Some reviewers hate it, some love it. Personally, I love it because it offers a razor sharp steering experience with very little steering way but I get it when people hate it. For some people, this type of steering setup may be too "sensitive".

    in my mind, for the 'purest' experience, I would not spec dynamic steering or magneto suspension or sports exhaust

    Sport exhaust is a must have option. Trust me on this one.

    Dynamic steering is a love-hate thing. I love it, some reviewers do as well but others hate it. Test-drive it if you can. It is a razor sharp steering with very short steering way but for some drivers, it may be too "sensitive", especially in fast changing curves. I love the precision but some people may consider it too sensitive (or too synthetic, I don't know).

    Magnetic Ride is only important if you sometimes want to ride in comfort and/or drive often on very bad roads.

    There are two must have features on the R8: V10 Plus variant and sport exhaust.

    Seriously? It is too tame and quiet (OK, you can still hear it but with the sport exhaust, the engine screams... Smiley).

    Nope, actually I have several Stark Industries t-shirts and whenever I wear them in the R8, I get thumbs up and laughs. indecision

    Most people don't have a clue what this means but my kids, their friends, some of our friends and many many people out there, know what it means and it is always fun to watch their reaction. blush

    Another hint: My R8's nick name is "Tony", the kids gave it to the car. Smiley

    yes, standard is not as loud, but the sound is more interesting, sharper and clearer

    What matters most is that you like it and that you can live with it.  kiss

    I do not like those aftermarket exhaust. Heard a couple of them, incl. the Akrapovic and they sound awful, they are loud but change the sound of the V10 engine. enlightened So if someone plans to get a sport exhaust for the R8 (the OEM sport exhaust is the best in my opinion but... yes), be careful to listen to it first and not only on the internet in YouTube videos.

    So far, the Capristo aftermarket exhaust sounds best (it is a bit louder but doesn't really change the V10 sound) in my opinion but there are a couple of exhausts without proper street legal certification which sound similar (and even louder).   I wonder however why someone want the R8 to be louder because the OEM sport exhaust is already at the limit of what I would want in such a car. I want to "please" people with the engine/exhaust sound, not annoy them. angry

    The difference would have been even bigger...Sabine over-revved the R8 in the first gear (rookie Smiley mistake in this car, it revs so fast, it is almost unbelievable...happened to me as well), I could hear it from the video. Before you say this can't be, they edited the video but kept the (correct) sound.

    Lucky guy...just imagine a tree instead of the water... Smiley

    People think that AWD is safe but actually, AWD is an additional liability...if you rely too much on it. I will never forget my first AWD mishap at age 19 or so (my first AWD car), nothing happened but I slid over all four wheels on a field and I was lucky there was nothing to hit around. Since that time, I use the AWD for improved straight line traction and better traction when I exit curves but I never fully rely on it because too much throttle and a slippery road and the AWD is worthless. It can't beat physics, neither can the ESP system.

    The car is probably totally lost, it will land at some parts dealer for some of the parts (body, wheels, carbon parts, etc.).

    I am no expert on this but I remember there was a massive flooding in my garage when I studied medicine in Tuebingen and me and my car only "escaped" because I was at the university that day. Huge luck for me because I was driving a highly modded Lancia Delta HF Integrale and most of the stuff I had installed in that car was not street legal Smiley (different times then... Smiley), so my insurance would have never paid for it. The mods were probably more expensive than the whole car because I used "official" rally parts.  Smiley  

    Over 12 cars were affected and all were declared "Totalschaden" (which means total destruction). My neighbor had a nice new BMW 3 series Cab, he cried when I met him...

    Even when the road is straight, if there is some mist on the road or if the road is a bit wet, the AWD (especially when not in Comfort mode!), cannot fully cope with it. So if the driver fully accelerated and the car started to swerve back and forth...well... I think we've seen that in many YouTube videos. 

    The AWD of the R8 is not neutral when the setup is not set to Comfort mode, it actually allows a bit more power to the read, like a RWD car (up to a point), especially in Dynamic mode and even more in Performance mode.

    One reason I drive in Comfort AWD mode only in winter time or when it rains heavily (I set up an Individual setting where everything is in Dynamic mode and the AWD is in Comfort mode).

    I learned it the "hard" way as well: I was doing 50(!) kph in a wide curve when I exited a road and there was invisible white frost (not sure if this is the correct English word for it) on the dry looking road (we had minus temperatures). The rear started sliding slowly (actually quite fun because it was highly controllable) but I guess I was lucky because of the low speed. With AWD in Comfort mode, the reaction is different, the ESP comes on earlier and the rear is more "stable".

    I know black ice, this wasn't it. If there had been black ice, I wouldn't have stood a chance to save the situation. The road was completely dry (typical "dry look") but since it was very cold, there was some very thin frost layer on the surface, basically invisible.

    It wasn't my fault Smiley...drivers in front of me were very careful, despite the 60, 80 or 100 kph speed limit (as you can see, they were driving pretty slow). Only once there was a 40 kph speed limit. Smiley

    Also, taking a photo at 270 kph is a bit more difficult (actually, I'd never do that) if you don't have a passenger with you. 

    I think I have a 324 kph photo somewhere, I'll look it up for you. Maybe it is going to make you happy (or less grumpy Smiley).
