Will the 997 hold it's value better than the 996?

I know that everything is speculation right now but humor me. Do you guys think the 997 will hold it's value better than the 996 did? It seems like the 996's are depreciating almost 10k a year, will we see the same trend with the 997 once the 998 comes out? What are the production numbers of the 997 vs. 996? Any thoughts are welcomed.

Re: Will the 997 hold it's value better than the 996?

in the uk, you lose about 8-9k (that's british pounds!) in a year on a 997S now so it's just as bad as the 996 anyway. Obviously if you buy a 996 now e.g. a new 996 Turbo, it's going to depreciate faster than the speed of sound, possibly light....

Yeah, but you can buy a 996 at a huge discount now, so that helps...

Re: Will the 997 hold it's value better than the 996?

My fear is we're on uncharted waters. An old 997 may cost an impossible amount to keep on the road because of the massive amount of electronics. This would make the car less desireable.

I don't see a real problem here. Even if you want to keep the 997 for the next 50 years, there are already electronics companies who are specialized in re-manufacturing "old design" chips, control units, etc. for older cars. I wouldn't worry too much, especially if you don't plan to keep your 997 for the next 20 years.

Re: Will the 997 hold it's value better than the 996?

Too many 997's in the UK and a depressed luxury/sports car market means these things are going to drop quicker than Jordans knickers on a page 3 shoot.

LOL! haven't been to the UK since John Major was PM, I forgot all about having morning tea (err, coffee) with page 3.

Uhhh, we prudish Yanks are stuck over here with worthless rags like the New York Times...requesting one of UK mates scan Jordan's knickers

Back on topic, 997 vs. 996 depreciation-- small advantage to 997 as a group in that all 997 get
  • PCM system /screen with ability retrofit Navigation (exc. Hong Kong?)
  • PSM standard
correct me if I'm wrong but both PCM & PSM were xtra $$ options on 996. OTOH, technophobes may rather do without the electronic complexity and expense to repair as another poster mentioned. Time to *off* the santa clauses...

  • Re: Will the 997 hold it's value better than the 996?

Since we are all speculating here. . . . I think it depends on how long and well you keep it. In the short term the value will drop off like the 996 because of Porsche's production volume meeting popular demand. In the long term, the few well maintained 997s will be appreciated because the design is more consistent as a modern interpretation of the first generation 911 than the 996.

Furthermore, If the 998 and subsequent generations are too aggressively futuristic, the 997 will be recognized as a true modern classic; ranking just behind the 993.

Re: Will the 997 hold it's value better than the 996?

IMO, the 997 has the Upper Torso (thorax) airbags in it's POSIP side impact protection system - for a total of 6 airbags.

The 996 has only 4 airbags. Thus the 997 has this more desirable feature over the 996.

Re: Will the 997 hold it's value better than the 996?

I now have just over 25,000 miles on my 2005 Carrera S (launch car so it has everything including ceramics). My dealer says it's worth about $58,000 on trade.

Mind if I ask what was MSRP? I'm sure you got your money's worth of enjoyment ... or would you have done anything different?

I think this number is way too low. The MRSP of your car should be close to $98000 when new (I know as my car has all your options plus cobalt blue). Your car is high mileage, but it should still be worth around $70000 depending on condition. Your dealer's quote is not being realistic.

Re: Will the 997 hold it's value better than the 996?

i purchased an 05997S (sticker at $93k) with 18k miles for $67k in los angeles

Re: Will the 997 hold it's value better than the 996?

Porsche do seem to be making an awful lot of these cars. I've noticed that the waiting time isn't too bad if you shop around dealerships in the UK.

I pulled into my office just yesterday and including mine, there were 3 997C2S sitting in a car park of 18 spaces. Was the most "common car" for the day. I know this isn't the norm, but you do see a few to wave to when driving about in general.

I mentally did a financial write off when I purchased mine because you can't justify it on those terms, so just enjoy it.

Despite mass production, I think the 997 will hold its value better than the 996 but not by much. The 996 is technologically more advanced than the 993 yet didn't hold residuals as well because it lacked the classic 911 appeal. The 997 is technically the best 911 yet and does share the classic 911 features and feel that enthusiasts hark on about.

Jordan would never do that!!!? Not for The Sun anyway! She's like really classy and would only do such things for lad mags like Nuts...

I really haven't seen that many 997s on the road in London (trust me they grab my attention) !? There are many more 996s and Cayennes around tho...

We must be in different parts of London, because they are pretty ubiquitous now from what I can see. I have no problem with that. Most of us here don't drive Porsches because of the exclusivity factor. I've been saying on this board for sometime now that the days of rock solid Porsche residuals are long gone. If one's going to trade in to a dealer, its basically a Pounds800 - Pounds1000 per month hit from when you bought the car.

Re: Will the 997 hold it's value better than the 996?

so what you are saying is that instead of ever selling my 997 and losing tonnes of money I should just build a bigger garage and add to my supercar collection as and when required?!

    well if you guys insist...

Until the 999 comes out, retro looking lights and shape..inspired on the 997 of the past...

Re: Will the 997 hold it's value better than the 996?

In the US it appears dealers price 997 cars based on mileage (1K miles = $1K off MRSP) plus how well its been maintained. I try to not think about it to much and just enjoy the car. I knew going in it was the dumbest financial move I've ever made, but my passion for cars ruled the day.

Re: Will the 997 hold it's value better than the 996?

I've also seen pristine 2003 996C2's with under 20K miles for the low $50K's....

Re: Will the 997 hold it's value better than the 996?

Everybody says so, therefore it's common knowledge that the 997 has an edge over the 996 and earlier cars as being "the 'perfection' of the 911 concept." Therefore it will always be preferred over the 996.

For making money, yes it is the dumbest financial move. But if money can buy happiness, I cannot think of a better move than buying Porsche. Happy Motoring Brothers!

people seemd to think that mamoun got a good/fair deal here in LA for paying 67G/93 sticker (no chrono if i remember and no PCCB?) and i see 997s everywhere here in Santa Monica though i travel from SM to Brentwood to Beverly Hills almost everyday so you lots of nice cars (saw a Carerra GT yesterday)...

CURIOUS, how has the car held up at 25,000 miles. any problems? may buy one used myself? thanks.

Re: Will the 997 hold it's value better than the 996?

We see lots of 911's around Seattle, but relatively few 997's so far. At the local Porsche dealership, it's very rare to see a 997 "on the lot", but they still have quite a number of 996 Turbo and C4S models.

I don't believe the residual value will be tied to the maintainability of the electronics or the relative adherence to the 911 tradition. I believe that value will be mostly tied to mileage and condition like always with used cars.

Re: Will the 997 hold it's value better than the 996?

    mateoche,
you're right, no PCCB or sport chrono....it has heated seats, power seats, bose, nav, full leather, cd changer, wheel caps colored, seal grey

Re: Will the 997 hold it's value better than the 996?

Thanks for the input guys. I"m closing in on getting my first P-car. I'm deciding betweent the 02 996 cab vs. 01 996 TT. Who knows, if I really enjoy owning a P-car I'll be getting a 997 down the line. If the anticipation of getting a P-car is 1/2 as good as owning one it looks I'll be a member here for a long time

    Scott

Re: Will the 997 hold it's value better than the 996?

i'd pick the 01 996TT over the cab but good luck, i'm sure you'd love it. Don't forget to post pics!

Re: Will the 997 hold it's value better than the 996?

i was considering an older car but shyed away due to unpredictable maintenance costs...
