yellow slunge around oil filler spout

Went to add a little oil yesterday and when I removed the oil filler cap was surprised to find yellow slunge on inside of cap and filler spout. I live in wet climate but is this normal? My 996 C4S is a 2003 with 19,000 km on it, should I be concerned? I use Mobil 0-40 oil.

Re: yellow slunge around oil filler spout

I believe it's normal. I had the same on my C4S. I used a lint free microfiber towel to wipe the sludge out.

The sludge shows that there is some water in the oil. Whilst it could mean that a leaking gasket is allowing water to get into the oil, it is much more likely to mean that you have been making a lot of short trips, so that water condensation has collected in the crankcase.

Don't worry about it. Just go for a long drive. It'll do your car some good - and do you a lot of good.

I have that too on my 997.... and there were some water drops. I hope that there is no water entry. I have not been doing so many short trips .... but being winter maybe that helps for condensation

Frankly, I don't know whether cold or damp weather promotes sludge deposits, but it does sound plausible that it would.

Re: yellow slunge around oil filler spout

it is just moisture being formed by the temperature differences between the outside air and the rising temperatures of the oil. Once you creat the moisture if you shut down yor engine the moisture mixes with the oil and forms the yellow sludge. This use to happen all the time with my 87 turbo if I only drove it for 10 miles in the winter. Think of your muflers when you start up the car. The temp changes cause water condensation and the water drips out of the exhaust pipe till it fully evaporates. So do not worry. Drive the car!

Re: yellow slunge around oil filler spout

As others have said, it's entirely normal. Just take a rag or paper towel and clean it out, being careful not to push any down the filler tube.

Thats exactly what i was going to say... 6 - 7 year ago i had a ford which would do this really bad around the oil filler, i remember when my dad drove it it use to clog up completely!! The cause short low rev trips... this is one reason why once the engine is up to operating temp one must take the revs high enough to allow the oil to circulate around the engine and evaporate any water, which can cause damage to the engine when its allowed to mix with piston by-products....

If water is getting into the oil, your water level will go down and it will also have turned into a black / brown colour due to oil contamination, and oil on the dipstick will also be white / black..... there are only a few ways oil can get into the oil, by either headgasket, cracked block or head, or a crack from the water channels on the turbo which is allowing water to get into the oil...

you will know when something wrong because of the 2 big givaways which i've mensioned, oil in your water and water contamination on the dipstick....

i hope this helps, give the car a real hard thrash, once fully warm of course this should then vaporise any water condense in your oil which will then be taken care of by the crankcase breather system..... which is connected to the intake, the engine then burns it with the rest of the garbage from the crankcase!

you can also check the crankcase breather system pipes as you may have a blocked pipe which is allowing the condense not to escape...

    cheers jim
