    Discovery Channel top 10 sports cars of all time

    I'm not sure if this has been posted before but the Discovery Channel listed the 10 "Greatest Ever Sports Cars".
    And you guessed it... the 911 was #1!

    #2: Miata (not sure about this one... did however have a huge down stream effect with the SLK and Z4)
    #3: Mclaren F1
    #4: E-type
    #5: Merc Benz Gullwing...

    Interesting, an American show with no Corvette, GT40, or viper in the top 5.

    Wow a Miata at number 2 with a Mclaren F1 at number 3. Not sure about that one.

    it seems that they're factoring the social importance of the car in, besides just the raw performance...

    I agree with their #2 choice. Not since the English imoorts of the 1950's has a vehicle done more to bring "sport" driving to the masses as has the Miata. Plus it has one thing the English never had: reliability.

    oops, I think the Enzo was #5 and the Gullwing #6.

    agree, it was cute, impractical, a girlie-car, under-powered but reliable & cheap.

    That's a freaky dirty twist of language to say that makes it a great car (up there with the Mclaren?!).

    But I guess sleazoid tactics are what makes "interesting" TV nowadays?

    Hmmmm, it does seem strange that a sanitized, watered-down, 30-year late mass-produced copy of the original Lotus Elan should be considered the #2 sports car of all time, and the car that inspired it doesn't get into the top 5 (top 10, top 50, ).

    Maybe they should have called it "The Discovery Channel Top 10 Sports Cars of the Short Life-Span of the Youthful Compilers List"

    At the time it first came out it was "revolutionary" (lowercase r) because there were no two-seater roadster sports cars (whatever) on the american market. It was successful and other mfgrs started making two seaters again.

    i love that, i started wathing when they showed the gullwing and got excited cause everytime there as commercial break they showed snapshots of cars to come on the list and they showed a porsche badge.. haha. not to my surpirse the 911 got #1 but it still made me happy..

    I would think the Boxster would be at or near the top(with the 911 and Gullwing- my favorites ).
