    Satellite and/or iPod question

This has probably been covered in the past, but I'm wondering if anyone has figured out a way to connect satellite radio or an iPod to their 997 using the cd changer connector? In my BMW I used a Blitzsafe adaptor to connect the cd changer connector to my Delphi XM receiver. I just had to change the stereo input to CD changer and control the radio functions with the Delphi unit.

I have the cd changer installed on my '05 997S, but after a year I've never used it. Blitzsafe doesn't make an adaptor for Porsche, but I would think someone might, or at least be able to do it. Googling hasn't provided any solutions.

Anyone out there know of a way to make this work?

    Thanks!

    Mike

    Re: Satellite and/or iPod question

I don't know of a way of using the CD Changer but you can have Sat radio installed by a radio shop. Also since you have a Delphi you can use the Wireless FM Transmitter that is built in.

    Re: Satellite and/or iPod question

The 997 has a digital radio/amp/speakers/CD changer system using a fiber optic MOST inter-connect bus.

While the original idea of MOST was to have a digital plug and play system for adding peripherals such as an iPod, or Sat tuner, each manufacturer that uses MOST also has their own SW tools and protocols to make it work. It does not seem like Porsche has made theirs available to the aftermarket, so there are no 3rd party solutions out there yet. There are several companies that are reverse-engineering the Porsche protocol, and one has been demonstrating a prototype for Cayenne, but no released solution.

With the 997 and Cayenne, your best solution to connect iPods and Sat tuners today is an in-line FM modulator. It has limited frequency response and dynamic range, but is light years better than an outboard FM transmitter when it comes to noise, cross-talk, and distortion.

The in-line unit plugs into the antenna plug on the back of the radio, and the antenna plugs into it.

These modulators has an auto-on feature that all you have to do is turn the iPod on, and tune your radio to the designated station. The modulator turns on, and disconnects the outside antenna so the radio just hears the modulators signal. They cost under $40.

Personally I hope that Apple and Porsche are talking, and Porsche decides to add connectivity for iPod to their radios. They have to be considering this, after all, Ferrari, Aston, and Lambo, offer it today, not to mention Audi and VW. And since they are the owners of VW now, it would seem that it is a parts-bin no-brainer.

I am so glad I have an old-technology analog 996. I can still work on it, and my iPod sounds great with my Becker/Bose Navigation radio.

Has anybody out there installed this type of solution in a 997? Who makes the best inline modulator?

I'm not sure if the newer Porsche radios use the DIN antenna plug, if so then you will also need adapters for the antenna. Those can be purchased from any Best Buy or Circuit City.

    Re: Satellite and/or iPod question

Thanks everyone. I guess I'll just hold out and see if anything comes down the line. My wife uses an FM modulator in her Mercedes, and quite honestly, it's not worth having. There's a huge drop in volume and the quality isn't so great.

There lies the problem. I checked with Best Buy, Circuit City and a couple custom shops and they tell me there is no adapter for the Porsche antenna lead. One shop told me that the antenna lead may be fiber optic as well, but he was not sure. He also said conversion products are starting to arrive for Mercedes, so maybe Porsche stuff will follow
