Same thing happened to me. The Cayman buzz last year got me thinking about Porsche again, after a long hiatus. Quickly went from Cayman to a C4. Firstly, it was the back seats, just incase I needed to take a trip with the dog. Secondly, the snowy weather led to the C4. Oh, plus I grew up in the back of a 912!!
I went for Seal Grey. It is a lower profile color. It looked more dull than dirty with winter road grime.
Good job on the upgrade!

Many people seem to forget one thing in their Cayman S "hype": since demand, especially in the US, seems to be pretty high, not many dealers are willing to give rebate on a Cayman S. The situation is different with the 997 Carrera, I bet some dealers are willing to provide a good deal. So yes, getting a 997 Carrera slightly over the price tag of a well equipped Cayman S may be possible. For now.

Good decision which otherwise would have been a costly and regrettable mistake.
I was invited to the Cayman launch party in Sutton Coldfield, England and i remember talking to a middle aged guy with his wife about the order he had just placed for the Cayman S while in the back of his mind he was thinking about the 997 instead. His wife much preferred the 997 and I gave him my 2p worth..."don't buy the boxster hardtop lookalike go for the real daddy icon...997!!" I drive the 987S which is fantastic but I still love the 997.

997S with -20mm sport suspension outside of USA does have LSD. All other versions with PASM do not have LSD.
The Cayman does not have LSD in any market. It has ASR and all the other electronic aides (which is no real substitute for an LSD when driven aggressively).

Costly? Regrettable?? I don't think so. My wife also liked the 911 because of the back seats....so she and the kids could come along on rides.....I promptly put money down on the Cayman S. If I wanted four seats and an icon, I'll go buy a minivan.

My back seats are storage, I don't want anybody stuffed back there anyhow.
The Cayman is beautiful in its own right, until you look at it from a straight side-view, where it goes from sexy to nerdy in a nano-second.
It's all in what drive's your passion. The 997, to me, combines the best styling, packaging, and performance. I know it's not going to be as "nimble" as the Cayman, but hell, it's nimble enough, and what it might lack in neutral handling, it more than compensates with "see ya later" power.
There is NO bad angle on the 997, the Cayman is a bit like that Seinfeld episode where the girl Jerry was dating kept changing drastically in different lighting and angles, to the point it freaked him out and he had to dump her.
I think you made the right choice. It's gotta be tough, to option out a Cayman S just the way you want it, and see that you're within peeing distance of the flagship, the more beautiful and powerful car, albeit a bit heavier and less "pure" for the track-junkie and slot-car set.
I know one thing..... I can't imagine a 997 owner "regretting" not getting a Cayman instead, but I can certainly visualize the opposite scenario being commonplace.
Myself, I'd like to own BOTH.. But since that's not terribly practical, I'm happy with my 997S, and would consider a Cayman a few rungs down the ladder.
I'm sure there's a similar discussion going on in some Aston Martin forum, regarding DB9's and V8 Vantages...

Sorry if that came out a bit arrogant but I really think that the Cayman S will not be as popular as some might think and perhaps more suited to track day use with modifications whilst the 911 is a GT, track day racer, sports coupe and 'family' car in one package!
I fully respect anyone who has or ordered one but IMO Porsche have made a mistake designing a well balanced hatchback that resembles a boxster and yet charging an extra Pounds5,000 GBP bringing it close to 997 territory which is a no brainer to me.

The price difference between a Boxster S and Cayman is close, the difference between a 997 and 997s is close.
And if you're buying a base 997, you have to ask yourself. Do you really want a 911(a 60 grand car) without xenons? without 19" wheels? without navigation???
Dunno about anyone else, but I for one would not buy a new 911 without any of those things!.

A capatible equiped Cayman and base 997 should be around $10K difference. In the U.S., a well equiped Cayman will be around $68K - $70K and the similar equiped base 997 will be around $80K. Go to the website and config both and see for yourself. Again, both are good cars. There is nothing one is better than the other. It is a matter of choice. I just happen to choose the 997.
