    20 Inch Wheels on 997S?

    I have a slate grey 06 997s and I was thinking about getting silver (non-chromed) 20 inch HRE 540r rims. Could upgrading the wheel size by 1 inch from the standard wheels cause a problem? Has anybody seen these rims on the 997 in person or put 20 inch wheels on their 997? Thanks for the feedback!

    Tooner has the 20 inch Techart wheels on his 997 S Cab. Shouldn't be a problem.

    It's a personal thing. But we already know that the 19-inchers are a "stretch" when it comes to ride and driving dynamics, as most of the drunk-with-obsessiveness purist mags tout the 18-inchers on the standard car as being the best "driving" setup. Going to 20's will definitely gain you nothing, and likely cost you some performance and ride quality. How much, and whether it's enough to offset your eye for style, is your call. For me, it's over-the-top. Creates a "toy-car" look, like a Hot Wheels. I like the 19's. If I went with 20's, I feel that I'd risk looking like K-Fed. With every kid in town around here RENTING 20's to install on their Hondas and Cavaliers, I want my 997 to continue looking "strictly business", and not drift over into the Homey-G category. Sorry Tooner!!!

    Of course, every time I travel to Cali, I realize that y'all got your own west coast "things" going on.... Kids probably get chrome dubs for their Big Wheels and Green Machines out there. Have at it, but do it for the right reason. Don't follow fad.

    If you do anything, go to a beautiful 18in wheel!

    Despite the comment of 69bossnine: "as most of the drunk-with-obsessiveness purist mags tout the 18-inchers on the standard car as being the best "driving" setup"----- is someones' ego being pricked?!---------- these are really experienced guys who have driven all the 997 possibilities.

    20in would be a very bad idea!

    18"? thats funny... too small and wont look good IMO ...the 19" stock wheels I had looked ok but after I put these 20" techarts I will never go back... but its all a matter of opionion so make yours and do what YOU think looks best!

    Dealer told me he believed the suspension's warrenty goes to hell with different wheels, is this correct?

    IOW, any problems you have that CAN be blamed on the non-Porsche wheels will be blamed on the non-Porsche wheels.

    What happens when you buy a set of wheels from Champion? I imagine if you buy the wheels from them, the warranty is not an issue.

    Yeah my dealer gave me the same spiel about change of rims and warranty issues, i don't know what to think about it.
    Has anybody actually faced this issue with a dealer?

    Not sure how putting different rims on a car would void the warranty. Hey what if you put Non Porsche OEM 18" or 19" rims would the dealer still say it voids the warranty or just if you put 20"?

    If you have a flexible conscience ( ) if you have suspension trouble you can always put the old wheels back on I guess.

    20's look way too big- better for SUV's. IMO, the 19 or 18's are the best for the 997 for ride comfort, looks and performance.

    yes! looked bad... too much gap between the tire and fender IMO... ill post some before/after pics later on today.

    I've seen the pictures. I stand by my original statement. The 20's are too much, like a lady who got a boob job, but overdid it a bit, resulting in looking more silly than sexy.

    But hey, it's all in what you like.

    LMAO! I know it's funny, someone said a few days ago a certain woman's botox-ed lips looked like a futon. Noticeably fake body parts turn me totally off.

    I think 20s are insane, but, then, guys who wear the crotch of their jeans below their knees are considered normal.


    Gotta figure that 17s ACTUALLY did improve performance and looked new and interesting, then came the 18s to make the point again, then the 19s incase EVERYbody didn;t notice..., God help us because not all of us get it yet..., here come the 20s!

    So comment on the change in ride, compliance, how does it deal with expansion joints/cracked roads, handling -----

    Appearance is not everything.

    To my eyes the wheels (metal) look too large for the available space .

    Agreed SVNSVN,

    I do not get this large wheel, skinny tire thing. The smaller wheels are lighter, and with taller side walls the tire-wheels follwo the raod better, and provie more feel in the steering. That is why some prfer 18in +ceramics as giving the ultimate in responsiveness.

    I have a reply on another thread I will not repeat, save for saying that some wheel-designs, with spokes right out to the rim and thin (visual) rims, look as large or larger than some 19in designs! Best of both worlds ---- the 18in BBS RS-GT look 'large' and therefore splendid.

    However we hope our colleague above enjoys his 20in, and that the ride, compliance, and responsiveness are not spoilt much.

    The ride is a bit more harsher...but tolorable...in my opinion of course. Maybe be to rough for someone else...I guess you have to see it for yourself to make assesment. I went from 19" to 20" and the ride changed just a bit nothing really noticable.

    Champion motorsport makes a nice, very light, wheel also. You will be limited to a very limited tire selection. I'm only aware of the Contis for now. When you run the required 305/25, you will also experience a slightly more harsh ride, than a comparable 305 or 295/30.

    Have to agree with the 20" being too much. I'm looking into wheels myself. Keep checking w/BBS for a 19" RS-GT. Had the wheels on an 03 M-3. . They looked great, the desired understated look, and were light. My opionion is that BBS makes argueably the best wheel on the market.For now I'm considering a Champion RG19; a 11.5 rear, running a 305, Porsche spec tire. Any thoughts. They weigh 21.5 lbs. and 20.5 front.

    Only comment I can provide comes from Porsche. I read that when they designed the 997 they started with the assumption that they were going to go with 19 in wheels. As a result, they did extensive testing with that size and literally tore apart 996 suspensions because of the added stress caused by the 19s. They ended up totally replacing the 997 suspensions with a new design. Apparently wheel size makes a big deal with performance (ability to handle curves) but comes at a price,--suspension upgrades. Would one inch make a difference? Hard to really evaluate. I'm sure PCNA will hide behind the warranty should you suffer from premature suspension problems from up sizing to 20s.

    And....it is a west coast thing.

    Ride of the 20s not really harsh. Tooner's car has 20s and also lowered. Ride is like being on sport mode. But according to him he lost a little bit of performance.
