    Bye bye supercharger - welcome turbo charger?

    Today I got the newest rumor regarding the future of the supercharged x55 engines. Apparently DC really wants to abandon the supercharger and go for a twin-turbo charged V8 engine instead. There were thoughts to offer a 6.0 V12 on the current E55/S55/SL55/CL55 models but apparently it would increase production cost. Giving the fact that the facelifted C-class and the new SLK get a normally aspirated V8 engine, the logical conclusion is to offer a bi-turbo charged version of that engine.
    I heard this rumor before and I think I posted it in an older post but I never really believed it.

    So I really think there is a good chance we see a bi-turbo charged V8 4-valve engine on the facelifted E55/SL55 by 2005, power is rumored to be in the 520-560 HP range.

    Man that sucks! i mean it rulez but i wanted to buy the car now.... and now i want TT with 520 560 hp.... does it mean that the car will be here end of 2004?

    RC, will the 65's power be bunked up a notch? And the SLR's?

    And, ps, how are you finding depolying 800Nm of torque in the winter....?

    RC's would be 700 Nm, I'm the one with 800 Nm!!!
    Oh, and I find it quite, ermmm, full of ESP!

    PS: V8 TT sounds really good btw. New styling will be nice. If only the SL could have 300 kgs less...

    Mate, I think you'll find, your S600's probably pushing close to if not more than 900NM. Mercedes is for some reason heavily under-rating its powerplants.

    And as for a lighter MB, thats just wishful thinking...same with me, when I say 700bhp would be nice.


    ps, Don't floor your S600 in the winter! Especially when one tyre happens to be on a manhole cover...in the wet...

    What's german for turbo? Cause I'll miss the Kompressor on the sides of my car. My friends think I have an MB Kompressor.

    I think the german word is Turbolader (Turbo Charger). Correct me anyone if I am wrong. Basically, they will probably just put Turbo in place of Kompressor like Porsche does on the 911 Turbo.

    good question -- hard to imagine merc/AMG continue building the kompressor-V8 for the next 6 years of the SLR's model cycle if they go for turbocharging for all other models... poor SLR residuals...

    Thats not the only problem, in this day and age, when Mercedes started upping the HP ante 354-500-603, and now that other car manufacturers are also following, how can Mercedes make the SLR for 7 years, and NOT give it a power upgrade? Surely the only competitor to the SLR is AMG themselves...

    right. "evo" magazine recently stated that "merc is stuck in a power race with itself". that hits the spot IMO.
