    E55 COMAND retrofit...the truth?

    I talked yesterday to somebody who was somehow involved in COMAND beta testing.
    It seems that US E55 cars can't be retrofitted with the COMAND system because the US COMAND and German (ROW COMAND) are completely different units, even if they might look the same from the outside.
    Apparently DC installed a retrofit option to all E-class models equipped with APS 50 but this retrofit option is compatible only with the german (ROW?) COMAND system.
    So when the specs for the US COMAND were finished, the unit wasn't compatible anymore with the retrofit.
    It also seems that this came as a surprise to DC, one reason why they made that generous offer in the US.
    The US COMAND apparently won't have a VIDEO or even TV option, no possibility to play DVD movies.
    However...it seems that the navigation system is DVD based, using a DVD unit in the trunk.
    The slot above the monitor fits CDs only, not CDs and DVDs as on german/ROW units.

    This information came to me from another person, so I can't guarantee that it is correct. I just thought that some of you guys are interested to hear it.

    In case you don't believe that COMAND retrofit is possible on german E55: I'll post two pictures of my E55 (before/after) soon.

    COMAND with a DVD Music Video running...
    (picture isn't very good but I took it from an angle to be able to see the F1 Steering Wheel, so one knows this really is my car.

    Better COMAND picture. The Video DVD option is great but it shuts off at around 15 kph speed and comes on again when I stop.
    I understand this is a safety feature but it is pretty annoying for co-drivers.
    I wish DC would use the airbag recognition matt (under the co-driver's seat) to turn the Video option on and off, even during driving (so co-drivers would be able to watch a video).
    A earphone plug would have been nice too.

    Good question, I didn't try it yet but will do so as soon as I get a VCD in my hands (a friend has a collection).
    What I can say for sure regarding the 6-CD Changer: it plays all kind of self-burned CD-ROMs, including the CD-R, CD-RW and even copy protected CD-ROMs which usually make a lot of trouble in car music players.
    The APS30 in my wife's SLK32 AMG doesn't play copy protected CD-ROMs. Same thing for the COMAND in our ML55.

    Not quite sure what this has to do with the COMAND but anyway...nice picture.
    You should see what AMG can do as retrofits, really impressive.
    The most interesting (price-wise) system is the Advanced Mobile Media System which provides a DVD changer and two TFT screens in the rear. Great stuff for small kids riding in the rear.

    My dad got a letter from mercedes that they were gonna retrofit the command thing soon. how different can the american command be from the australian?? that sucks if you blokes cant get it

    On the other hand, US COMAND customers can get a Satellite Radio as an option, which is a pretty cool thing to have.
