    Will Porsche revisit 1987 ?

As we know, Porsche introduced the first 911 Turbo Targa in 1987 (911 Turbo 3.3 Targa).

Does anyone believe that the following excerpt from Piston heads holds water? In fact they quoted Autocar.

    Quote:
    Porsche plots future plans

....According to Autocar, which spoke recently with Porsche boss Wendelin Wiedeking, the 911 Turbo Cabriolet has been spotted on test in South Africa, while the 911 Turbo Targa and 911 GT3 are well-advanced in their development.

    Any thoughts?

Re: Will Porsche revisit 1987 ?

I think it's a great idea, and an important way to legitimize the Targa roof as a viable alternative to coupe or cab.

The targa is lighter and stiffer than a cab, but glass, a hatch, and more open as opposed to the coupe. Nice compromise really. I'm keen to see it on AWD 911's, S and non-S's, and the Turbo.

Choice can't possibly be bad can it?

Re: Will Porsche revisit 1987 ?

The only issue I have with the Targa is the rear side window loses its elegant curve at the rearmost point and instead receives an acute angle (like the corner of a triangle).

I agree - even though the silhouette of the car is the same, that internal styling cue is sadly missing. Having said that, it maintains the lines and looks better than a cab, IMO.

Re: Will Porsche revisit 1987 ?

I hope there is Turbo Targa coming. That would give the Turbo Cab a run for its money at the weight scales

They should also build Targa versions of the Cayman and the Cayenne. They own the name, its well known, so I cant imagine them not marketing the hell out of it.

Re: Will Porsche revisit 1987 ?

Now we are talking... Turbo Targa, would be great if this setup was re-introduced.

I completely agree. That curve looks so beautiful on the coupes.

Still, I think a Turbo Targa is a great idea. I hope they do it.

Really? I always thought that on the 996 the roof line of the targa was much more interesting and pleasing than the normal coupe...

A Turbo targa would be pretty close to the ultimate everyday car.

For me it just doesn't look as classy as the coupe. It's good to see we all have different opinions on the styling.

Re: Will Porsche revisit 1987 ?

My first 911 was an '87 triple black Targa . When the Turbo Targa version ( they had coupe and cab Turbos , too ,in the late 80s plus slant nose versions of all three ) came out, I didn't like it . The combo of the loss of the curved side window as Grant said and the wide fenders just made the upper car look like a tiny baseball cap sitting atop a big head . And as we know , from 993 on, the Targa has lost it's iconic roll hoop and lift off roof panel- it's a coupe silhouette but with a sharp angle at rear side glass not as pretty as coupe side glass.

Re: Will Porsche revisit 1987 ?

i wouldn't see why they wouldn't, don't they use the same roof as the rest of the 911s anyways? Maybe they are expecting to have good sales with a turbo targa which justifies them to make a base targa model, regardless of poor sales. Would be kinda cool so see a carbon roof ala M6, what do you think?

Re: Will Porsche revisit 1987 ?

993/996 Targa sales have been the pits in the US market . My sales guy says they cringed each time PCNA forced them to floor one in order to get more allocations of desired models . Why bother making them ?

Re: Will Porsche revisit 1987 ?

I'll tell you what--I would much prefer being able to delete the sunroof (which one cannot in the US) than have two sunroof versions (the targa really is a sunroof with a hatchback) of the Turbo. The 996 Targa flopped in the US, so I bet Porsche doesn't do this.

Unless we're talking real targa, bad idea.

A question to ask PAG. They obviously have an answer, since they are.

Grant, I had you figured as a guy who drives a Porsche for his own benefit, and not for that of bystanders. When you're sitting in the driver's seat of a Targa, you don't see the rear side window.
(I had a Targa one time, and wasn't even very concious of it not being a coupe).

Re: Will Porsche revisit 1987 ?

I hope it is true but who knows. A 997 Targa Turbo.

Fritz, you're right, but you have to get out of the car eventually

Generally reluctantly, and long may it remain so.

Re: Will Porsche revisit 1987 ?

I bought the 2003 Targa when it came out. The sales man assured me it was totally refined since the 993 Targa was nothing to brag about due to squeaks, rattles amd leakes. He said he was re-engineered. Well after 4000 miles the squeaks got so annoying. Took it in 3 times and finaly sold it. I loved the top open but hated the squeaks, specially in the winter time. The 575 Superamerica has a Traga this year and it looks fabulous.
