    440xi with performance package

I know this is not an M car...but...I need 4WD....and a 911 C4 is out of the equation (sometimes better to listen to your better half)...

So l look around a bit. S5 is boring and I had bad experience with Audi customer service. Anyway, I just found out BMW has a perf. package on the 40i engine that brings it to 360hp and 500NM. Coupled with the M brakes, suspension etc makes for a good compromise - I also have a very good fleet rebate on bimmers so that also makes it quite attractive...

Any thoughts before I pull the trigger tomorrow? I will test drive a 340i with the said perf package before the final decision...but..?

Your mind has clearly been preset to BMW from the start but to be honest, I find the Audi and Mercedes alternatives more compelling but get whatever your gut tells you because it is your money and you need to like the car, not me or someone else here.  Smiley

You clearly never drove your X5 in heavy snow in the mountains. 😉

I've seen sp many stuck X5 in Austria...the lack of a special off-road mode with lock differentials clearly is a handicap. The Cayenne can do better, believe it or not and the G class is amazing. I am also surprised how often those crossovers  like Nissan Qashqai and so on are stuck in snow, pretty bad, often also related to a reduced ground clearance.

Well, clear I have had many BMWs and never a problem with them so yes tend to have a preference. Never had a Cayenne and the X5/Q5 were my only SUVs...but on Pirelli snows it climbs everywhere in 10-15cm snow on steep slopes...that is all I need for it...

Anyway, would you have said the S5 is better than the 440?

    Re: 440xi with performance package

OMG, there is obviously a very good fleet rebate, obviously a tendency to drive beemers...so, what is this comparison with other cars all about ? ...I do like the interior and exterior of the 3/4 series (always have/had 3series as a company car), would I want to take into account an S5 or something else ? Personally, no. Anyway, where is my popcorn ? happy, to stay tuned and follow this thread...smiley

    Re: 440xi with performance package

well, eventually after hard negotiation with 'the boss' i don't have to try to combine 'family' and 'sport' into one car (hence 440...S5 is still ugly as hell sorry...) and i get to buy 'my toy' separately smiley and i can keep my X5 as DD :-)

    So i am in the market for a 997S/4S manual :-) exactly what i wanted...topic closed :-)

Well, this was exactly my point...I have seen so many stuck in snow X5 in Austria, so I assume you never really encountered enough snow to get stuck. Smiley

    Re: 440xi with performance package

I have no idea how, much snow you would need to get stuck. I drive often (not later than several weeks ago) on 15-20cm on steep gradients opening the road early morning (road to My-Tendre for instance). No problem at atl. Of course you need the right tires...and a bit of experience. Your mention of diff lock on snow I can't imagine what kind of situation you would need to put yourself into? Going off road onto the snow ? Yeah sure but why would you do that in this case I would get a Range Rover anyway...

i think a lot of people just because they have a SUV think they can go anywhere but they actually don't have snow driving experience. I am I think in the exact same situation on the sand, I just did 5'300km on gravel/ sand roads in Africa. There was this time I almost got stuck, and I had a proper car with off-road tires, diff lock, low gear...but I can't "read" the sand. In the same place guys from South Africa who do this often where just hovering...no idea how and they even had "street" tires. I asked  one of the guys and he didn't use diff lock at all, he just does not get stuck most of the times because of experience in those conditions.

I tend to think same on snow...and I won't mention drivers from some of our surrounding nations but surely some people have no clue and no car brand is going to help :)

now back to business - any hint on 997 second hand? :) already a 997c2 and this time I reallly want the wide body look. I am thinking post 2007 to minimize IMS problems and even a base 3.6. This will be my weekend car...so I need a sunroof and PSE over anything else...Realiability is a priority for me - I am one of those poor guys who had a 996 engine blow up and it was not a happy moment for and my bank account....

Had a 996...the interior is just so awfully "plastic" - 997 is really the best looking for me.

GTS versions / manual are quite rare and VERY expensive...

    Since I am shopping around I saw a garage that had a GT3 RS 4.0 - what a beauty! 350KCHF!!!!

I assume the BMW X6/5 or whatever had summer rubber, as I don´t think the difference can be that significant.
My old A4 Avant Quattro wasn´t very good in snow, as it mostly slided sideways on start. In fact, my Honda CR-V is quite excellent in snow and slick conditions, and much better that the old A4.
Dunno about the RS3, though. Remains to be seen as we´ve had zero snow so farSmiley

Recognizing actually some of the footage from local Audi club, at least that grey RS6 and multicolored A5 had Nordic / studded winter tyres. Which those BMW:s and probably that yellow RS4 didn't. So, not really a valid comparison.
