Naw, exhaust and headers are easy to spot, and NOBODY goes to the trouble of switching cams on a new car, while leaving everything else stock. You wouldn't gain anything from that. Cam swaps in those cars only pay dividends with heads and intake.

Up at Gainesville Raceway, just about everybody watches the races from the staging lanes, so you're right down there with the cars, with the hoods up, cooling off for the next round. The couple C6 owners that I ever did engage in conversation (this was like, last spring, right after I took delivery of my 997S, but it had too few miles to go making any passes in...) were basically out with the cars for their first time since purchasing them, baselining them. They had plans for better flowing air filter lids and cat-back exhausts, cheesy and ineffective stuff like that, but the two fellas I chatted with were running bone stockers at the time.

I don't understand your skepticism, considering the times that I've seen at the track are consistent with all the U.S. magazines, and not any considerably different than published times for the 997S (except trap speed maybe). What is it about the Corvette, other than one single Sport Auto test, that makes you think it's gotta be slow?? Hell, C5 Z06's were turning bone-stock 12.60-12.80 times up at Gainesville raceway when they were new several years ago, there's no reason for the C6 to perform any worse.

Maybe Chevy de-tunes the Euro-spec 'Vettes.

It's scepticism in the face of several european tests (Sport Auto, Autobild, etc.). Your statement about detuned Vettes, while seemingly ridiculous, would seem like the only reasonable explanation right now. Like I said, I like Corvettes, it's just that the numbers don't add up. I have no doubts about your credibility and believe everything you are saying that's why it's weird. A car which is equal at best, to another car in european magazine performance tests, beats it both in american magazine tests and driven by normal guys at the drag strip. That's the only thing that doesn't click with me.

Re: 0-100 in 3.7 997 tt with pdk

It only BARELY beats it. What I was referring to, in the beginning, was that the Corvette is really in it's "realm" from a slow roll forward, given it's h.p. and torque advantage. The U.S. mags all show that, and it's only logical, given the basic statistics on the cars. But, since straight-line performance tests almost always begin from a standstill, the 911 always makes for a very even match, no surprise, as the engine's sitting over the drive wheels, and you can launch it like a shotgun, hoping your clutch doesn't go up in smoke at least.

Two very close cars.. I guess, given the similarity in weight and aerodynamics, I would like to see an INDEPENDENT chassis dyno test of both cars, on the same dyno, measuring at the rear wheels. That would tell you the real tale, and you could then chalk up all of the magazine anomolies to coincidental driving differences.

When pushed hard Corvettes get frkkn scary fast. They are a completely different kind of beast to tame. Raw handling with lots of raw power. 400ft lbs of torque starting at low rpms in a 3100lb car is not the mechanical profile of your typical European sports car. The performance capability is there. But if you are not used to Vettes you arent going to get maximum performance out of one, and it will scare the
crap out of you from even wanting to.

Now I understand why european testers always talked about bad setup in the past and I also understand now why GM is bringing their cars to the Nordschleife to make them "fit" for us european drivers. I suppose they make them slowlier, add softer shocks/springs and add a more intrusive anti-slip system to them. C'mon, Jim...you can't be serious.
It is no secret that the euro versions of the Corvette get a sportier setup, one reason GM brings a huge number of cars over here for testing.

Dont worry RC, they arent going to make them slower for the EU.

The Corvette C6 Z06's exhaust system is the same for both the USA and the EU.

The base model Corvettes for the EU get the springs and shocks from the optional Z51 suspension package.

The new 997TT VTG might even have a torque curve and hp output that is close to a Corvette Z06. But with AWD and 4-500lbs more weight it will be interesting to see a 997VTG run with a Z06. Im sure it will handle better with AWD and be friendlier feeling to drive hard, but at double the US price of a Z06 it should be better.

Let me put the Corvette versus Porsche driving experience like this, the Corvette is more engine than car and a 997 Carrera is more car than engine. Thats not saying either is bad, it just means different ways of doing things.

911's always leave you wishing for even more power and Corvettes always leave you hungry for a better suspension and more traction to exploit the power they have but with less drama.

Guess wich one is easier to drive fast and feel more comfortable in while doing so?

And if you are a Dutch automobile writer, the Corvette is a special challenge. One of their guys got into a new Z06 turned left out on to the street, floored the gas pedal and crashed it in only 25m!

    69,

I was refering to 100-200 km/h times, where the 997S barely edges the Vette. 0-100 km/h times are absolutely meaningless in my book. Like stated before, I don't understand how these discrepancies can occur, but it sure looks like they do.

He probably just forgot that he didn't have a caravan on the tow hitch.

    Sorry. German joke.

I'll leave it to to RC to explain.
