What's not standard on the Cayman S

When I first saw the Cayman S at my local dealer I liked what I saw, but when I dipped into the catalogue I was suprised by what's NOT standard on the Cayman S, especially considering that it costs more than the Boxster S: Climate control is NOT standard; leather seating surfaces are NOT standard; even the PCM screen that comes in the 997, even if you don't get navigation, is not standard.

So then I wonder: shouldn't a coupe cost less than its convertible companion, especially if the coupe doesn't even have the standard features of the convertible?

Maybe I'm missing something. When did Porsche start putting "leatherette" seats in its cars? When did it ditch stardard climate control? Every Porsche I've owned since the mid-1990s has had these features as STD.

    Help me out, please .....

I am afraid that all the items you have mentioned are NOT STANDARD in the Boxster (even in the "S") - no automatic climate control (only standard climate requiring manual adjustment), no PCM-screen, seats will come in an alcantara/leatherette combination - at least in Europe.

To my knowledge this has been true for the 987-predecessor (986) also.

It's also interesting that the $$$ markup for the Boxster-S (compared to the 2.7 base model) is even steeper compared to the 997 S (versus 997) taking into account that for the 997 S the PASM (or -20mmm/LSD as an alternative in the Euro-version) is standard, whereas in the Boxster S you still have to pay for it as an option.

Cayman S is basically the same standard specification as the Boxster S. i.e. (here in the UK, anyway) no PCM, part leather, no auto-climate). And yes, in my opinion the Cayman is overpriced. Closer to Boxster S money would have made sense, more power as trade off for the more expensive soft top mechanism. It is only a Boxster coupe with slightly more power. Nothing more, nothing less.

Re: What's not standard on the Cayman S

As far as I can tell partial leather is standard in the USA as on the website it has zero cost.
The US cars are actually slightly better specced than in Europe as both HomeLink and Cruise Control are standard.
Who needs the PCM screen if you don't have navigation?

Re: What's not standard on the Cayman S

The Cayman S is built on the excellent mid-engine Boxster platform but has a much stiffer structure, more HP & Torque from a better revving engine, and a modified, stiffer suspension.

Being based on the Boxster it pretty much is equipped the same way. The US model comes standard with leather seating surfaces and upgraded sound package.

If you like the "standard features of a convertible" aspect....slower, more body flex, less sharp handling, but an open top, the Boxster S is a great choice and cheaper than a Cayman. It's all up to you on what is important.

Are you sure we're talking about the SAME Porsche brand?
What you're missing? My dozends of previous posts.
But hey, you're getting 15 HP more, Variocam Plus, more luggage room in the rear and the illusion of driving Porsche's new lightweight racer and 911 killer.
Isn't that enough for the extra money?

Re: What's not standard on the Cayman S

Sorry I missed your previous posts. The Cayman S looks like a sweet ride and I can't wait to test drive one. My long legs are unfortunately probably going to keep me from buying one. The legroom in the Cayman S, like the Boxster, is about 2 inches less than the 997 Carrera. I measured both cars myself. It's just enough to really matter on a longer drive. I've owned a Boxster and loved it, but eventually sold it mostly because I couldn't drive the car more than a half hour without feeling cramped.

Have you tried to talk to your dealer about this? There are possibilities...limited ones but they exist.
BTW: the "frog" position is actually the typical sportsdriver position. It may be somehow cramped but unless you're playing major league Basketball, you should be fine.

Re: What's not standard on the Cayman S

An engine over the rear axle

Re: What's not standard on the Cayman S

The electrically operated convertible roof that is standard on a Boxster S - that costs less in the first place!

Re: What's not standard on the Cayman S

That's it! I do sit in the frog position in both the Boxster and Cayman, with both knees bent. So race drivers sit this way? They don't stretch their legs out?

I have talked with my dealer before about trying to get more room inside the Boxster, and the main thing they came up with was a few tricks to get the driver's seat as far back and down as possible. And it seemed to help to have the full power seat, which allowed more positions than the manual adjust seat. One long-legged Boster owner said he removed his center console. A less-thick seat back might make a diffence. And of course I don't wear shoes when I drive (Hawaii) and I never put my wallet in my back pocket. A few other little tricks. Any other ideas? Thanks.
