    997 tt DSG

    Hello,

just want to give some "maybe" valuable information I have heard yesterday evening.

The new DSG for the new 997 tt is shifting 25% faster then F430 F1 seq. gearbox.

This gearbox will come after the turbo also to the AWD models as an option.

The sound of a 997 tt with DSG when down shifting should be worth to pay the extra fee. The person described: he has never heard something better

Maybe worth to wait one year more?

    AM

    Re: 997 tt DSG

My wife's Golf GTI DSG sounds like an F1 car when shifting especially at high rev due to the speed of the gear shift. I can imagine that on the 997 turbo it would be sensational!

    Re: 997 tt DSG

i've also driven the Golf GTI w/DSG. pretty amazing gearbox. smooth & super fast up & down shifts (at both low & high rpms).
makes a little 'flop' sound when you hit the paddles. much better than BMW's SMG, Ferrari's F1, & esp. Porsche's tip.

unfortunately, a Porsche AG engineer i spoke with during the 997 C4 launch says DSG (for Porsche) won't be released within 2 years. will also not be retrofittable.

Well, DSG would surely be a killer application for the 997 Turbo. I just wish they would offer it now and not one year later. Since DSG affects straight line performance too (in a positive way), it is actually a must-have option. I would have waited another year but since I put this car on the company, I urgently need a car now...even better: yesterday.

Right now I'm more worried about performance with the manual. If the 997 Turbo doesn't do 0-100 kph in 3.8 seconds, 0-160 kph in 8 seconds and 0-200 kph in 12 seconds, I would be very disappointed. Let's wait and pray...

    Re: 997 tt DSG

RC, thank God if you are right!
What I heard is around 4.1s(0-100kph) with 480hp. Question is will there be 997tS immediately with 997t or later?
Also, will Porsche offer X50 for 997t immediately??
I hope too that we all will not be disapponited with specs...

    Re: 997 tt DSG

    Branimire,

it seems that X50 will be immediately at start. I hope that my old information isn't true only 460 hp for the 997tt".

I hope the X50 is available from the start. That would likely push the HP # over the top. Can't wait for the official press release.

    Re: 997 tt DSG

    Pozdrav, mumbasic!

    Thanks for info.

    Re: 997 tt DSG

al pettee, no x50 just an S i think...

I doubt that a powerkit will be available from the start, it doesn't make sense. The Turbo S isn't available for the first model year either as far as we heard. And even worse: only a VERY VERY limited number of cars will be available until the summer factory shutdown. I know the number for Germany but I won't post it for obvious reasons.

    Re: 997 tt DSG

DSG ( as opposed to full manual tranny ) is THE way to go for a turbo motor - you will never have to lift your foot between gears - meaning turbos are always at max avail boost !

    Re: 997 tt DSG

    Thanks, RC.
If that is the case then it is very best to wait 2007 model year(from september 2006).
Till then I will enjoy my Boxster S and forthcoming 997S(X51,PCCB, -20mm/LSD, March 2006)!

ALL 997 Turbo will be MY 2007, even the cars produced before the summer factory shutdown. I'm afraid you need to go for a MY 2008 car if you want DSG and/or the powerkit. And even then, it isn't sure. BUT: I still hope for DSG from the start but I don't think that I'm that lucky.

    Re: 997 tt DSG

Any news if PCCB is standard at introduction?

Do you mean standard without any cost? Why should they do so?

IMO Porsche won't change its option policy, what means steel brakes for the 997tt, PCCB for at least 9 grand extra (I think they will raise the price, it's a new generation PCCB and now they can adjust to Ferrari, where they charge 14k). Most probably the 997tts will have the PCCB as standard (but this you will realise at the base price ).

    Re: 997 tt DSG

Once you have it, you will never go back to manual. Truly a technological marvel. Driving is so much more pleasurable. Easier, faster, and a touch of Shumy as you accelerate. What could be better?

Having the driver to attain and maintain the skill of operating a 6-speed manual.

I'll second that. I've had the opportunity to open-track with DSG, and it takes away roughly 50% of what I enjoy about sporting driving.

And quite honestly, I'm not so row-boat slow with the old-school clutch and lever that moving to DSG makes such a monumental difference that I pee my pants with delight. My lasting take on the experience was simply "big bleepin deal".

Easy to go faster, hence the use in professional sport, but about as fulfilling as letting the pool boy pleasure your wife for you (unless your wife is mean or ugly or both), while you hold her legs and bark orders at him.

Oh, jeez, why can't I ever just shut up?? We've opened this pandora's box before. Suffice it to say, I enjoy a good DSG as much as I enjoy robot sex, and I admittedly should have stayed far away from this thread!!
Techno-gee-whiz geekerie, IMHO... You can have it.

No problem from me. Whether one agrees with bossman or not, whether or not he is "over-the-top," we all must agree that he is always a 10/10 in entertainment value.

As far as I heard, no. 350 mm discs front and maybe 330 mm discs rear with red calipers. PCCB is rumored to have huge 380 mm discs front and 350 mm discs rear with yellow calipers.

Ha ha ha ha, that's the best metaphor I have seen in a long time Here's to "being in total control"

Although I am a tech/gadget freak and would normally love something like PDK or Ferrari's F1 box, it doesn't give you the same "feel" as a manual box. Especially on a Ferrari or Lambo with their metal gate click-click action, and you can feel that car is "alive" through the vibrations in the stick and the gearbox flexing when you floor it.

For track use the computer gearboxes are perfect and much faster, but for that sunday afternoon drive - just you, the car, an open road, the sunset.... Using a computer gearbox in this situation is a bit like watching the sunset through a flatscreen tv, even if it is HDTV

Nor does it give you total control of the car in the same way a manual does. Watch Jason Platos Fifth Gear testdrive (on a track) of the Gallardo SE to see what I mean:
