    Re: new porsche spypics

Thanks 330 for attaching these pictures. Always on top of spy pics.

    Re: new porsche spypics

    Hi,

you can see that the 997 has the same body like the 996 4s,with other rear lights and front lights.

    Re: new porsche spypics

On this mule it appears that the whole front nose piece is false, covering up the real deal. Notice on the side and rear fotos the large seam/bump on the front fender as well as the cutout around the side marker lamp. It's as if this nosepiece just hooks on. Also the large unsightly protruding tow hook cover.
The lighting on the rear in shadow males it hard to discern much if anything.
Plate appears to be a Georgia distributer and landscape appears to be in USA as well

Latest rumors indicate that Porsche will offer from the beginning a 997 C2(!) S with the wider body and of course the standard C2 model with the narrow body.
The C4 S, the Turbo and the GT3/GT2 are expected at least one year later, if not even for 2006.
Latest rumors also indicate that the 997 comes next summer (official production starts around june 2004 to provide dealers with showcars) and there is also a strong rumor indicating the postponing of the 987 til 2005.

To make it short: most rumors seem to indicate the 997 for MY 2005 (production start summer 2004).
Base engine is rumored to be a 3.8 litre with 340 HP.
The 997 GT3 is rumored at around 400 HP, the all new 997 Turbo at 460 HP and the new GT2 will hit the 500 HP barrier.

Personally I still think that Porsche needs to have 360 HP on the 997 base model, 500 HP on the Turbo and 520 HP on the GT2 but it seems that Porsche wouldn't listen.
There is a saying in Germany: "Wer nicht hören will, muss fühlen". Translation: "who doesn't want to listen has to take the consequences..." and I shut up now.

    Re: new porsche spypics

Yes,i agree with you 360hp would be nice for the 997 base model, but i think 460-470hp is enough for the turbo. If you think about the good times for the X50 turbo.

    Cya,

    Re: new porsche spypics

    RC,

These rumors sound pretty solid to me

You forgot something though, as you said the base would be 340 HP and the powerkit to increase it to 360 HP for another $10k.

That applies to Turbo too, their X52(?) package would cost a mere $20k for 25 more HP.

I had almost 550 HP on my Turbo and it wasn't enough. I don't quite understand.
My E55 outruns (by a very narrow margin, I agree) a 996 Turbo, I'm talking about a 2 ton limousine with a top speed of 188 mph (raised by AMG officially) and enhanced traction through a limited slip differential (also officially installed by AMG). So where's the advantage of the 911 Turbo? On the track? On narrow country roads? The 911 Turbo is the Porsche driving machine, it is somehow a Porsche tradition.
The GT3/GT2 are only limited production numbers cars for special people but the Turbo is the icon of Porsche.
I think 460 HP aren't enough, 500 HP should be minimum. When I think about the upcoming new AMG engine generation (due around 2005) with 4-valves, direct fuel injection and minimum 530-550 HP, I'm not sure if Porsche is doing the right thing. It is not enough to put the Porsche badge on their cars, they need power too. Power sells, especially to people who don't have a clue about cars, so Porsche should really think about it.

Are u talkin to someone else, other then us here???

    Re: new porsche spypics

RC you are a crazy horse power nut! I guess i really dont understand your need for speed, because where i come from you can't go anything over 90(in some states, 65 here in CA) anywhere (as far as I know) legally! Why do you like to drive fast anyway? When all you do put more wear and tear on your car?????!!!!!!!!

Anyway, the 997 hopefully will be a visual stunner and not a retro car!

I can answer that: because he can! That's what we all do here; drive as fast as our sensibilities will allow. I do the same thing. I just don't have the opportunities to go fast as often as RC does. Autobahns give you a smooth driving surface with unlimited speeds. The only places I find to drive as fast as I want are on back country roads (they undulate a bit). If I had access to autobahns I imagine my foot would be to the floor pretty often.

    Re: new porsche spypics

the 996 TT should've had 500 HP. MB is playing the HP race but porsche is avoiding it presumably worried about US liability. most TT guys in the states are mod'g to 550-600 so why not have it stock.

it would be cooler if the new gt2 only weighed 2800# with say 520 HP, and Torque

    Re: new porsche spypics

I can't wait for the Turbo, GT2, and GT3 911 variants. I can't wait to read comparison tests between the two different generations.

Wear & tear & engine life

I used to think this too. I don't anymore. Now I think that the sort of sedate driving we see in the USA actually does more harm than good to a properly engineered engine.

Hard use tends to keep pressures up and the rings seated. It tends to reduce blow-by. It tends to bring the oil up to temperature more often which helps to boil off contaminants in the oil. Those contaminants are what cause real wear in engines.

As everyone here knows, I've run my Turbo very hard on a bunch of long and difficult trips. I'm frequently told that my engine has more power than most. I believe this is down to the use it has seen.

What use to kill engines was lead. Now the most likely death of an engine is from oil starvation (the valve guides and gaskets/seals start to allow oil by and the owner doesn't notice and runs the car dry -- obviously talking non-enthusiasts here). Machining standards and oils are far superior today. I frankly believe most of these engines will go 300,000 km today.

When was the last time you heard of the longevity of an engine being reduced because it was run too hard?

    Launch date 997 & 987

Porsche AG will never confirm such a thing but it's highly likely that the 997 will be launched in Europe early fall 2004 with a US launch 4-5 month later.

Regarding the 987 what they are saying officially is that it will arrive on the market after the 997. They don't want to make the same mistake as last time when many 996 buyers were complaining that their car was a 'me too' Boxster. My guess is the 987 should hit the European showrooms early 2005 let's say February or March and the US coast 3-4 month later....

As usual, Porsche will introduce the 997 C2 Coupe first and then will move up the scale with the C4S and Turbo versions coming at least 2 years later.

The current 996 was launched during the Autumn of 97, the 996 TT early 2000, the 996 C4S early 2002....

There has been no Turbo for 2 years the 993 Turbo was discontinued in March 98 and no 4S for 4 years (discontinued in March 98).

So it's highly likely that the 996 TT and 4S will remain on the market until let's say Spring-Summer of 2005....

Porsche is basically the only brand where you have 2 generations still selling for 6-9 month. It's helping tremendously as margins aren't the same on a C2 Coupe and on a TT.....

I hope I'm right, time will tell...

There is no such thing as "real" information...unless your name is Wiedeking.
Right now everything on the net is pure speculation, even most Porsche employees don't know for sure when the 997 is coming because the prelaunch is a pretty painless formality.
All rumors indicate that the 997 is ready to roll, everything more precise is...pure speculation.

    Re: Launch date 997 & 987

Yeh, I guess my question should have been: Did you get that info from an insider...
Anyway, I can't wait to see the "real" 997! Maybe I'll take my check book with me

Some advise from my own experience: wait a few months after introduction. New options surface and sometimes some bugs are sorted out too.

    Re: Launch date 997 & 987

Good advice indeed. I had lots of problems in late 1998 with one of the first 996s in the US...
Anyway, I'm getting an "old new" '03 in a couple of days which should keep me going until the 997 comes out and is fully sorted...

    Re: Launch date 997 & 987

However, even with the problems the early '98 production encountered (I have one too), the design change from 993 to 996 was quite strong. I suspect the change from 996 to 997 will not be as strong, and therefore not change every component in the car. Assuming that to be true, I would hope and expect very few problems with the 997 early launch cars, as compared to the early 996's.

So if Porsche is listening, what do we want?

    345-360hp
C2, C4S, coupes and cabs all at same time
    C4S widebody cab like '04
    Give us more options standard
    Keep price in line
    5 year/60k mile warranty

    Re: Launch date 997 & 987

    Hi JMR,

I would be tempted to say both official and speculation.

With my job, I have contacts with highly ranked managers at Porsche AG. They will never officially confirm some informations but they will give you some details to influence your thoughts...

For example it's official that the 987 will come after the 997 but we don't know exactly when the 997 will come.

One thing is sure, it won't come this fiscal year (End July 04) so it has to be later. According to some component suppliers, they are suppose to start delivering parts during the summer which makes me think the 997 should hit the European markets during the fall of 2004.

If the past is any guide, they will introduce the 997 C2 Coupe first, then the C2 Cab 5-6 month later then the C4 coupe and Cab... exactly as they did with the 993 and 996.

For the 964, it was a bit different as the 964 C4 appeared in 1989 while the Carrera 3.2l was still produced. Then the 964 C2 arrived about a year later.

I believe I shouldn't be too far from reality except if there is a big technical problem with the 997. And as I have said, the 996 high end models (Turbo, C4S, GT3 & 2) are likely to stay in production until the spring of 05 leaving us plenty of time to buy these very desirable models....
