M5 versus the world: lap times and 100-150mph

    From m5board.com

We're still buzzing over the Z06's ferocious 3.4-second burst to 60 mph.

When we reeled off a 1:26.00 lap, our knees were audibly knocking and we parked it. We've heard that the best GM drivers can go 2.50 seconds a lap faster at Grattan.

Viper's 1:27.50 lap time was 1.50 seconds slower than the Vette's.

The Viper's 3.8-second 0-to-60 sprint is still plenty quick, but it's almost a half-second slower than the Vette's. Some of that difference comes down to an issue of engine rpm and gearing. The Vette, for example, can reach 60 mph in first gear, whereas the Viper must use up a time-consuming gearshift. But in the quarter-mile, where the gearing isn't so much an issue, the Viper's 12.1-second time trails the Vette's by 0.3 second. As speeds increase, the Corvette's advantage widens. To hit 150 mph, the Viper needs 20.2 seconds, the Z06, 17.9. In a drag race, the Viper loses.

    Grattan lap times:

    Z06: 1:26....1:23.5 Gm test driver
    Viper: 1:27.5
    M5: 1:31.25
    CLS55AMG: 1:32.55
    Charger SRT-8: 1:32.65
    STS-V: 1:33.55
    Mazda MX-5 - 1:36.14
    Pontiac Solstice - 1:37.35

Yes, its true...the M5 is as close to a Miata as a Z06. At least on a race track.

    100-150mph

    Corvette Z06: 9.6
    Ford GT: 11.1
    M5: 11.4
    Gallardo: 12.3
    55AMG: 15.1
    Corvette Z51: 15.4
    911 Carerra S: 16.2
    Porsche 911: 18
    Charger SRT: 19.5
    STS-V: 24.9

Re: M5 versus the world: lap times and 100-150mph

Something S is Slow In Stuttgart!

    100-150mph

    Corvette Z06: 9.6
    Ford GT: 11.1
    M5: 11.4
    Gallardo: 12.3
    55AMG: 15.1
    Corvette Z51: 15.4
    911 Carerra S: 16.2
    Porsche 911: 18

Yeah its all important that the 997 has its refined feel and precision, nice leather and options, and the available sport suspension NEVER seen in the USA, but they do charge buckets of cash more for that and dont even offer here what they should, eg, the -10mm lower sport suspension and LSD.

A almost 7 second difference in 100 to 150 mph time between any Corvette and a 911S though is just NOT acceptable!

Porsche should include the GT3 engine on the 997S. Its more than expensive enough to pay for it. For a 911S to be that much slower than a stinkin Vette Z06 is absurd.

The M96 based 997S engine is just a bigger wheeezing Boxster motor and the 997S does not deserve it.

Re: M5 versus the world: lap times and 100-150mph

Sadly Jim... if you read the rest of this board, half of these guys would buy a Yugo if it was rebadged as a 911.

Porsche marketing is aware of this so they continue to insult the longtime sportcar enthusiast. If you were running a company wouldn't you try to maximize profits by offering an inferior engine? Then in a few years they can say... "after much R&D we have come up with this much more powerful version of the 911 legacy." Laughable...

Porsche will only do what they need to to sell vehicles. Those on the board who fail to understand this will just prolong the current mediocre line-up.

The viper sucked in the recent sportauto test in Hockenheim vs. the F430.

If I take the Viper as the benchmark the Z06 is not what has been promised by GM.

Re: M5 versus the world: lap times and 100-150mph

The recent Autoweek comparison also concluded that the Z06 wins any drag race with the Viper.....but they preferred the balance of the Viper on the race track to that of the Z06.

Re: M5 versus the world: lap times and 100-150mph

And Jason Plato (5th Gear) could not find a single thing he liked about the Viper when driving it on a track. That was the open-top version, so either the closed top is a completely different animal or the Z06 can't be that great either..

I completely agree that Porsche needs to step things up with such fierce competition (those acceleration figures in comparison to the ZO6 are ridiculous).
You make an interesting point when you say that 'they continue to insult the longtime sportscar enthusiast.' Absolutely. It seems to me that most Porsche's customers today are no longer hardcore sportscar fans.

I must disagree with your point that Porsche's lineup is mediocre though. Porsches are still among the best balanced and fun to drive cars IMO.
