Should Porsche offer a "Manettino" on 997?

If you don't know what a "manettino" is, it's a rotary switch on the steering wheel of the Ferrari 430 that collectively adjusts throttle sensitivity, suspension stiffness, stability control and electronic limited slip differential, according to road, track or weather conditions.

Should Porsche fit one (probably as an option) to the 997?

Re: Should Porsche offer a "Manettino" on 997?

They need to come up with an LSD first in the US (electronic or otherwise) before we need to worry about the Manettino

Re: Should Porsche offer a "Manettino" on 997?

I'll settle for being able to mute the radio/CD (or at least a way to shut the damn thing off) without going through multiple menus and a rotary dial only to have it reset itself after shut down.

Re: Should Porsche offer a "Manettino" on 997?

No, I don't want electronic dampers in my sportscar to adjust...

PSM and throttle sensitivety can alreday be adjusted via SportChrono.

The only thing left is an electronic LSD for it to be adjustable, doubt it would make that much difference than the mechanical one in the -20mm? if we are talking about a AWD car maybe but a RWD...

So my answer is... No, not in the RWD's if you can opt for the -20mm with sport chrono.

    Manettino??

you do mean iPOD integration, right!???~?~?~?!?!

I believe in the U.S., the 1999 996's had LSD as an option.

The Manettino is a great concept. It allows the driver to adjust instantaneously to road conditons and"opportunities". Once you understand the different settings and their use, you will wonder why they never offered it before.

BTW, I suspect many of you do not like the concept because Porsche did not offer it first.

Re: Should Porsche offer a "Manettino" on 997?

No doubt its a cool option, but if I'd have to shell out 10k more for it, I'd rather not at the moment.

Re: Should Porsche offer a "Manettino" on 997?

    Sport chrono works fine.

Re: Should Porsche offer a "Manettino" on 997?

Most forumers are already complaining about the virtues of the sport chrono so it may not be a good idea.
However, I am for the idea since I'm a gadget fan.

Re: Should Porsche offer a "Manettino" on 997?

I don't want any further electronic nannies that dilute the driving experience and can potentially be something else to go wrong. I'd gladly exchange my PASM and PSM for a limited slip differential and a set of coilovers.

I prefer to drive, not fiddle with electronic gimmicks.

Re: Should Porsche offer a "Manettino" on 997?

    Manettino? Shaken, not stirred?

I don't want or need more electronics c---. Just give me more freakin' POWER. The Manettino is a nice gadget for the Ferrari. The 911Turbo should be light, tight and fast, and the driver should be the one to adjust the throttle sensitivity-with his right foot. The 911Turbo keeps gaining enough weight and has enough gadgetry as is. The suspension should always be very tight in a TT-if one is so orthopedically limited in a car in a tight suspension, then he shouldn't be driving a TT. The Nick Berry's of the road can fiddle with their electronic chauffeur. Put the Manettino on the Cayman, not on the 911Turbo.

    Exatctly right

Re: Should Porsche offer a "Manettino" on 997?

I wouldn't even add it to a 997NA (S or non-S), but of course they could make it an expensive option, but god-forbid, standard. One wonders at what price one would go for one. . . .

Re: Should Porsche offer a "Manettino" on 997?

I just want to be able to use Nav without the radio or CD. The soultion today is to mute the radio.

    I think Ferrari was smart

For once I agree with Nick. Grouping control of PASM, PSM, and Sport Chrono, together with Porsche's non existent electronic LSD, into one control that is set according to road conditions, and is highly visible and accessible, seems like a simple, smart, and logical idea to me.

Today on the 997 you have to use 3 separate buttons, which are all out of peripheral vision, to control the key settings of the car's performance. Frankly that seems Luddite by comparison to the 430.

As to Nav - it's easier to use Mapquest than fumble with the Stone Age controls Porsche have designed into the Nav interface. They should spend time with Honda or Nissan's suppliers and get it right.

As to more power - the 997 needs to go on a diet before it gets more power - it really is becoming a Porker sad to say. Hopefully the GT3 will be slim and trim without needing brute force to make it go fast.
