Anyone here exported a car from the US to the UK?

I'm moving to London at the end of the year and I am studying options between selling here and buying there and exporting my own which I like very much anyway

Re: Anyone here exported a car from the US to the UK?

I have done this the other way round, imported cars from the US to the UK.

It is quite simple, your major challange is going to be paying the tax and converting the head and tail lamps to UK spec. You will also have to add a rear fog lamp.

The tax is judged as the list price of the vehicle when it was new and I think is 17.5% but I could be wrong.

I have always impoted older cars and they are taxed differantly.

Number plates are differant here so they will not fit into the recess on the rear bumper which can look a bit ugly.

If it is a permanent move I would sell my car and buy a UK spec one. You will get a much higher price for your car in the US than here in the UK, should you decide to sell it at a later date, and you will also find that your insurance premiums are much higher because the car is LHD.

    Hope this helps.

The headlamps are easily converted to RHD spec, I think you may just be able to wire up the fog lamp as it resides within the rear light cluster.

Re: Anyone here exported a car from the US to the UK?

In my experience (ran a continental car in UK for 5 yrs: 97-02) UK insurers do not significantly adjust, if at all, insurance rates for LHD versus RHD.

    UK car insurance

    My understanding too.

Many British Ringers will buy LHD cars because they are cheaper and they spend so much time on the Continent. They will usually still keep them registered in the UK. No difference in the insurance rates between LHD and RHD.

    Re: UK car insurance

    Thanks to all.
I have found that the tax and duty is nill, provided that I can prove that I have owned the car for 6 months prior to import and keep the car at least 12 months after import...
This seems really good for me...

My car will only be used on week-ends and mostly on the track anyway so it's better to have a LHD car for me. Next thing is that cars cost 2/3 in the US of what they cost in the UK. With the $ where it is and resale value where they are in the US, I couldn't even buy a Boxster in the UK (OK so you get my point )

    Re: UK car insurance

    Hy guys,
it seems you are gathering informations very soon on how to import a car from US to UK.
I currently live in Italy and i'm trying to figure out how to do the same thing (US to Italy).

Can anyone help me? For example...does anyone know any website to look at?

    Thanks a lot

Re: Import a 911 from US to UK

A friend of mine imported a 996 "millenium" from the US to the UK. He told me it was quite easy. he had to change the headlamps and that was pretty much it.
I don't know exactly about the tax. He had to own it for more than 6 month to make sure he wouldn't pay too much in taxes...
He is now very happy driving it in London and on the Continent most of the time

Re: Import a 911 from US to UK

Does your friend have an e-mail address that you could mail me? I would very much like to ask him 1 or 2 questions about the lights... my private e-mail is rotsaert@bellsouth.net
    Thanks

Re: Import a 911 from US to UK

You do not have to change the front lights as there is a "switch" that allows them to be changed to left and right hand drive.

    Hope this helps.

When you get to the UK try Chris at Binkly insurance, 02087738123, he has arranged very good rates for the GT3 register members including trackday cover at a reasonable cost.
