What's this with 955 918 Spyders being manufactured?  37 crash dummies??

Thats exactly how I did read the number!

Re: The sad truth at Porsche...

    Nice catch.

Even if they were crash/test vehicles, would they typically be included in sales/performance figures?  Are some of these track/competition units that are included here for simplicity's sake?

    Interesting...

They includes preproduction units and prototypes. Some of those cars are 'purchased' by Porsche Driving School and Porsche Travel Club. Those were the cars we used at 918 track training courses.

The prototypes are mostly gone, but at least one is sitting inside the Porsche Museum Smiley. The preproduction cars have Limitation numbers above 918, on the dash display but they carried a 000 plate.

I think you need to write a book.  The title will be: The Porsche 918, The Inside Story.  Smiley

Still surprised that Porsche would list those cars in its production numbers for each model.

Well those cars did make it to the production line and did used up parts and cost Porsche money...................

It's more noticeable for the 918 simply because of the low production number, one wouldn't be able to spot them within the rest of the lineup. Just Leipzig alone consumed like 40 GT3RSs, and numerous various 911 variants, and a fleet of Cayennes. The company also maintain a fleet of Panamera and Cayennes as company transport for executives and picking up guests in Zuffenhausen. Porsche Travel Club also maintains a big fleet of current cars, same with the Porsche Sports Driving School. Various Porsche Experience Centre around the world also maintains a full fleet of current vehicles.

For example, the Porsche Winter Driving in Finland this coming January, they will run courses from mid January to mid March, Porsche will have around 150 cars there. That's the scale of internal consumption of Porsche cars.

Re: The sad truth at Porsche...

Great clarification.  I agree that you should write a book Nick.

I was also wondering about the 918RSR's and how that plays in.  Do motorsports units get counted separately?  (I assume so...)

I sure wish I were in a position to be affected by potential dilution of the value in 918's due to the additional 37 units; because that would mean I would have one in my garage.  Not to sound callous to those who may be disappointed, but I wish I had those kind of problems...

Re: The sad truth at Porsche...

It is unfortunate for investors that the 918 does not have the same "built-in value escalator" of the Carrera GT.

Most automakers have set aside VINs for prototypes and will destroy the cars after the testing period has ended or will not even generate a VIN for cars that will never be driven on public roads.  Evidently, based on what you have supplied, Porsche has a different set of policies for prototypes.

Most of the 918 prototypes are destroyed. The current fleet of them, which are considered pre-production, have proper VINs and are driven on roads. But those will never make it to customer hands, I asked already.

The rest of the cars are basically production cars for internal consumption, after a year in service they are sold off to dealers to be re-saled.

No, I meant crashing and reducing the number of outstanding unitsyes.

On the other hand, it often also kills its owner, thus reducing the number of potential owners...
