    Yup, very strange indeed

Re: Ouch! Murcielago gets destroyed for being illegally imported.

Makes perfect sense to me. How do else are you going to extract taxes if people don't see the consequences of not paying?  No doubt there was an extra high percentage due to it being an exotic car.  Greed and envy. Every tax collectors favorite friend.

Are you serious? You can´t be Smiley They could impound the car, make an auction and give the money to some charity organazation related to road accidents for instance. This is like burning a 20" rice or beans container on the main city square for everyone to see, because the importer/owner didn´t pay the taxes if you know what I mean. It could be a Renault Clio and I still would be schocked, question is not the car, but the decision base itself.

You'd think that in a country like Thailand they could find plenty of charity organisations to which donate the car for auction instead of destroying it. How heartless and stupid....

SmileyAgreed. Also, they could put out a fine of 500k USD for illegally imported cars. This would surely hurt owners most. If not, well...at least it would produce some money for the government. Smiley

Whoever had this idea was driven by envy and some sort of revenge feel, not reason.

German customs destroy every year hundred of million worth plagiarism from Nike, Gucci, .... and co. Nobody cares! I have sent a letter years ago to them German customs and asked them to send all these plagiarism to some very poor children in Africa. I didn´t get any answer, nor I did expect to get one.

I know the brand owner has the right to ask to be destroyed.

Not only you, many charities asked customs to not destroy clothing but like you said, the brand owners demand the destruction.

However, if German customs confiscates a car, it won't be destroyed...it will be auctioned.

Also one thing is to destroy something that is yours which you can do with what ever you like, and another is something that became public property by confiscation ordered destroyed by someone "in charge".

Publicity..... if the owner had simply been fined no one else would have been discouraged to attempt to illegally import into Taiwan.  Now everyone knows the consequences....Smiley the senseless destruction and waste has achieved its aim.

Why not publicly flagellate the owner, this would probably attract more attention? Smiley

Destroying the car? What a waste. Smiley
