36 => 31 psi pressure drop. Worth worrying about?

One of my rear tyres has dropped from 36 to 31 psi since Friday. Typically it's Sunday, and I need to drive 150 miles back to work this evening. Running hands round tyre, I can't feel anything obvious, but pulled a small 1/8..1/4 inch flint shard out of the thick part of the tread.

Do you folks reckon it's OK to drive on this week until I can get it checked, and fixed or replaced? Have re-inflated and am checking to see what the pressure-drop is like in the next hour or two. Tyres have 6500k on them.

If it doesn't get any worse you're probably OK until you can get it repaired, but re-inspect the tire to make sure nothing else is in the tire. I would jack-up the car and look closely at the tire.....

Re: 36 => 31 psi pressure drop. Worth worrying about?

Big drop considering the ambient temperature has risen about 5'C in the same time (which in itself would probably increase your previous 36 into 37/38 psi)

Inspect for anything in the tread or sidewall (including the inner face).

Re: 36 => 31 psi pressure drop. Worth worrying about?

After a 150 mile run and a cold night, it's only down to 35 psi this lunchtime. I'm going to play it by ear this week. What's the best price for 18" rears people are getting at the moment?

Contact Micheldever Tyres. Cheapest around. And they do "N" grade Porsche tyres 01962 774437 www.micheldever.co.uk

Re: 36 => 31 psi pressure drop. Worth worrying about?

I have had bad reports of Micheldever recently a friend with a 928 had to stop them jacking the car incorrectly, they didn't put the locking wheelnut on the correct stud (its marked) and they didn't use a torque wrench - not bad 3 out of 3 wrong.

They might be cheap but watch them like a hawk - they now have a premium service apparently , whatever that is ??

Bracknell tyres part of same group, but really look after the car.

    With either, avoid Saturdays

Re: 36 => 31 psi pressure drop. Worth worrying about?

If they stay relatively constant from one morning to the next (app. same time/temp/"cold" status to compare), you should be ok, no? But if not, you might want to consider replacing both tires on that axis unless the tread wear is minimal, and match them up with the remaining two "old" tires in brand/model.

Re: 36 => 31 psi pressure drop. Worth worrying about?

Re:Ente - Yep. Agreed. This is where the ownership experience starts to get expensive! Tyres are part warn - perhaps 2/3. Will see if it hold out another couple of weeks, then swap to winters. Got to buy tyres sometime, so might as well spend Pounds2090 on a cheap set of rims and expensive set of tyres. Then I've got spare wheels in case of future inopportune punctures. How much did you pay for your tyre Ente? Was it a rear or a front? Thanks for a heads-up on Micheldever Percymon. I was considering, though they haven't got back to me with a price. I could only ever do Saturday, so might say 'sod it' and stick with OPC.

Re: 36 => 31 psi pressure drop. Worth worrying about?

Mine was a 19" rear Michelin PS2, and cost 322 at the West London OPC all incl.

Re: 36 => 31 psi pressure drop. Worth worrying about?

You can check out prices online here for comparison purposes at Kwik Fit

Re: 36 => 31 psi pressure drop. Worth worrying about?

Down to 32 psi this eve. Inspected, and looks like a nail in the centre of the tread. (Though muddy and difficult to say definitively).

What's the OPC line on patching tyres? Is it possible to get them to plug it - the tread is only half worn. I know they are not keen.

Re: 36 => 31 psi pressure drop. Worth worrying about?

I've never had an issue getting repairs on Z and N rated tyres - plug repairs are perfectly OK according to my local tyre depot (non OPC) who i trust 100%

OPC, if they have their own trye fitting kit (not all do), may try to force a new tyre as they won't be bothered about repairs.

If you are contemplating very hard driving on track days or flat out autobhan stints then maybe think about a new tyre, but for fast road repair will be fine

Re: 36 => 31 psi pressure drop. Worth worrying about?

I had a nail embeded on the rear tire of my car about a month ago. After checking the price of a new tire I decided to use a plug to repair it. The fix works like a charm and no problem at all since then. Ohh yes, and I paid 7 British Pounds instead of the 230 pounds required for the new tire. So save yourself some money and see if you can use a plug instead.

Plugs are quick, but the best repair is a patch on the inside of the tire.

Sorry, what I meant is a patch repair. Thanks for the correction 964C2.

Re: 36 => 31 psi pressure drop. Worth worrying about?

Would a patch repaired wheel make it on the track???

I probably wouldn't want to risk it. All I really want to do is to extend the life of the holed tyre until normal replacement time, then I can replace both tyres on the same axle at the same time. Not too keen on having one new tyre and one half-worn one on at the same time, and don't want to have to replace the other perfectly good half worn tyre.

I'll hold off tracking it until I get fresh tyres.

Re: 36 => 31 psi pressure drop. Worth worrying about?

Good point. Plugging and taking it easy for the next two or three months until you'll replace anyway. It's winter too.

The only question is: Didn't you want to get a set of winter tires? Wouldn't that mean you'll put the plugged summer tire back on in spring just when the weather gets nice and the roads open up?

Re: 36 => 31 psi pressure drop. Worth worrying about?

Ente: Yes, I'm getting winter tyres on 17th. I can then merrily take the summer set to a 3rd party to get patched at my convenience. (OPC won't do it). I'll have to drive on patched tyres in the spring, but by the time the summer starts getting hot I'll hopefully have worn enough to replace. We'll see!

I'm going to need new tyres at some point, so I figured I might as well use the right tyres for the right season!

This way I also have an emergency set in case I get a flat and can't get it fixed immediately (I get paid by the hour, so having to spend a day at the tyre shop is costly!)

Re: 36 => 31 psi pressure drop. Worth worrying about?

    That should work.
