I think it is used for the transmission oil cooler on the tiptronic models. Otherwise, it is just a styling highlight to differentiate the 2.7 from the "S".

AFAIK both side air intakes are functional: left side (in Germany driver's side
) is used for the engine's aspiration, right side is used for additional cooling of the engine. Now I am wondering whether the drivers with a steering wheel on the right side (like UK) enjoy less engine sound compared to their friends from the continent 
as only the air intake used for the engine's aspiration creates that nice sound...

I agree. The intake on the cars left hand side isnn't blank. It is covered with a piece of plastic that lets air in round the side, but prevents water and dirt infgess into the engine.The vent on the right hand side is for engine bay cooling. There is a procedure on Renntech for removal of the dirt cover for the left hand side vent, but I imagine Porsche put it there for a reason, so on your own head be it.
I have sat in the passenger seat of my 987 and didn't notice a better engine sound. It sounds awsome from both seats!!

I think you're right. As the middle air intake (front air intakes) is a styling gimmick in the manual 987S only, I have been wondering whether we have to pay a price for this in terms of aerodynamic efficiency: the 987 base model shows a better cw-figure (0.29) than the 987 S (0.30)

Thats correct - 'desnorkling' was quite popular with the 986 - the only report i've seen of it on the 987 resulting in consumption dropping to 10-12mpg, rather than the guys normal 20-22. Needless to say he's put it back in now !
