    When You See Another Porsche........

    Just a curious question: When you're driving your Porsche, whatever model you own, and see another one on the road, do you acknowledge the driver at all?

    I've noticed recently that a lot of Corvette drivers make it a point to wave to one another. I think it's a great idea and many drivers feel like they're part of a large community.

    If you do, what kind of reactions have you reveived from other Porsche owners?

    Mostly wave or flash lights. Only about a 33% response rate however. Mostly I get blank looks

    I wave anytime I see another Porsche. Most of the time people will wave back, but there have been times when I've been flat out ignored, or give a thumbs up with a stupid look on their face as if mocking me.

    Tried it a few times but usually no response.
    A lot of Porsche owners here dont give a damn about the Porsche brand and mainly bought the car because they wanted to flaunt their financial prowess and good taste, and those guys usually don't have a lot of interest in being seen as part of a "car club for boys". But I may be wrong - altho that never happens.

    Can't speak from expierence with a P-car, as I am still a P-car waiter but I am afraid the same pattern you have observed in Denmark will apply to the german P-audience also...

    It has been very nice in the "old days" with my Alfa Spider (almost 100% of the other Spider pilots used the flash lights or have been waving and even 50% of the other Alfa model's drivers did so), but today even the Alfisti are becoming less passionate....Recall some strong reactions in Italy though when I went there with the new Spider model (new at that time) 10 years ago, when all the italian girls were shouting in ecstasy: que bella machina; for some still unknown reason never heard them shouting: que bello pilota

    When I used to drive a Fiat Stilo I got a surprising number of drivers waving to me (it's a damn hatch). It only lasted until the car really became mainstream, though...

    It's totally a cultural thing (US vs UK/EU). Here in the UK, if you waved at a complete and utter stranger just because you drive cars made by the same manufacturer, other people would think you are i) weird/odd ii) mad/psycho? iii) tasteless/naff or iv) a bit of each of these.

    It's funny - other people sometimes describe the English as eccentric but I guess there are some eccentricities which are acceptable and others which are considered plain odd and/or naff.

    It just isn't done here.

    Depends on where I am.
    Within Paris and London, I tried a couple of times (Flash your lights) and they don't get it, mostly because most of them don't even know the engine capacity of their cars for example, they buy it for the image.
    Outside big town, you encounter people who take out their Porsche to enjoy them on open roads, people with similar values to ours, if not the same and they most often respond.
    I've had a couple of Ferraris flashing me too with the thumbs up, that's cool too, although it's mostly envy
    Seriously, if someone in town does it to me, I'll reply but I generally don't make the first move.
    Couple of Murcielagos always parked on Champs Elysees for example, I know one of them has done 3000 km in two years! Yeah! Great car enthousiast! (Actually, it's a rental car for the fat guy with small Johnson who wants to pick up hot blond with big tits outside expensive clubs with fast cars).

    I can easily see how people who bought a Porsche only for image wouldn't acknowledge another one.

    Someone who doesn't respond might also be caught a little by surprise and only realize it after it's too late.

    There is a problem with that over here in Germany. It was a very nice gesture in the past to salute other Porsche drivers, motorcycle drivers still do that over here.

    But over the past years, a lot of people bought Porsche cars, some of them don't care about saluting others or history/tradition/heritage/whatever. It is sad but unfortunately a fact over here.

    I stopped saluting other drivers because most of the time, I got nothing in return and once or twice, I even got a funny look from them. No thanks.

    Driving home this week out past Canary Wharf in east London I counted 15 Porsche's during my 6 mile journey. A good mix of 997's, 996's and boxsters. Porsche's have become such a common sight in this part of the world that it's a constant job to nod wave and flash everyone!

    Yup, Canary Wharf is chock full of gorgeous new Porsches. I work there too.

    Just wait though, it's nearly bonus time. Our bonuses get announced early December hopefully so you'll see loads more Porsches soon. Porsche Centre East London in Stratford must be awaiting the bonuses just as eagerly as we are!
