    CDR24 radio removal

I need to remove the CDR 24 to install a direct FM connection for my XM. I know no removal key is used as in older models and it appears I have to remove the side panels. I can't figure out how to get them off. Its frustrating that there is no other input option in a $58,000. vehicle.

Perhaps the car is trying to tell you something - like leave well alone

    Re: CDR24 radio removal

Here's the instructions posted on Renntech for the 997 PCM removal, so it won't be too far removed

Step 1 - Remove small carpeted trim piece from side of center console by PCM (Beside PCM) Using Torx wrench size T-30
Step 2 - Remove two leather side trim pieces using Torx wrench size T-20
Step 3 - Using 5mm Allen wrench turn four (two each side) black hex locks 1/4 - 1/2 turn (CCW, I think) to unlatch side locks. Do not force these. They turn very easily in the correct direction. Open glove box on passenger side to access these latches.
Step 4 - theres a 7mm hex head screw on the passenger (RHS) side that you need to back out to carefully slide out PCM

Telephone Mute is Pin #3 on Black Plug A
+12 VDC is Pin #4 on same plug
-Ground is Pin #8 on same plug

the +12 VDC wire is Red/Green, the -Ground wire is Brown. No wire is attached at Pin #3. The White lead at Pin #5 is for the antenna.

    Re: CDR24 radio removal

Thanks for the info. I'll post pictures of completed installation.

    Re: CDR24 radio removal

Well, I worked on it today, as the turkey was getting ready...

You can get the more detailed PDF at: www.fuqua2003.com/cdr24.pdf

    Re: CDR24 radio removal

    Here's for the instructions...

    1 + 2.
Remove small carpeted trim piece from side of center console using Torx wrench size T-30

    3 + 4 + 5.
Remove the piece of panel that covers the head unit on each the side of the console.
    a) remove two screws per panel
    b) gently (but forcefully) pull the panel forward
    c) the 3 clips need to release, force seems the only way

    6 + 7. Getting close
    a) Undo the screw holding the unit in place
    (not all the way!!)
    b) gently turn the little black plastic locks CCW, this
    will hold down the clamps

    8 pull out the unit!

    9 - 12. Pictures of the unit

    13. all the tools needed and stuff removed

    -----------

I didn't buy an FM modulator yet, since I wanted to see if there was a standard coax connector... you never know with these Porsche engineers...

    Re: CDR24 radio removal

Nice pix and lots of useful information!

Do you have any audio options, like CD changer, Sound package, BOSE? I was wondering if any of those unused connectors could be used as additional inputs?

Does anyone know if the CD changer connects through the MOST bus or through a conventional cable loom?

    Re: CDR24 radio removal

CDonnection via Most bus - the orange fibre optic cables shown in the pics

    Re: CDR24 radio removal

well, I'm sure the spare socket on the back is meant to connect something!

I have the Bose option, so there's an amplifier in the front trunk, no other options. The cage the head unit is in is pretty light and empty...

If anyone recognizes the antenna connector and knows what this specific type is called, that'd be helpful...

I reckon an inline FM modulator should be able to connect with this, as long as I replace the "standard" FM connector with the little ones used by Becker.

    Re: CDR24 radio removal

The connection panel looks similar to that on the old CDR23 - its no doubt a double din recase of the same unit

This is the rear of the Becker equivalent of the CDR23 - the fibre optic connection does not feature on the Becker units. Just uses the std ISO plugs

    Re: CDR24 radio removal

OK, pretty sure I found them... there was a reference on a Cayenne board... you can order connectors from www.crutchfield.com

    Link to website

The ones you want are Euro Antenna Adaptor #12040EU20 and #12040EU10. They're $20 a piece.

I think the actual connectors are MCX connectors, which you can get for about $5 a piece, so if you want to save $30, that might be the way to go.
