Side effects of Porsche Ownership..... ah hem !

OK,,, the votes are in... I am going to drive in the winter. The snow belt group convinced me... as well as, the sun belts anal-ness about storage and a little dirt. You only live once. The roads are 90% clear during the Winter. While some of you are Kool about your babies in the garage, I'm out there enjoying. Thank you for all of your thoughts.
New Topic: My crazy buddy (owns P car) remarked, " Your _sex life is going to improve with that car". I said, " I'm married, are you nuts". He said, " Doesn't matter, it gets better with a Porsche". As we waded though his beers and my wine, the debate continued . We asked complete strangers (females) if our theory was correct. They wanted to see the car..... parked right outside in no dent zone. Replys were ," of course". One of the more outspoken ones
said, " Porshe or Geo Metro" ,, "Which guy would I chose?"
I'm into my first week with this car. My analysis is still underway on above topic. I am trying to get enough courage to bring this topic up with my wife ( likely to be a bad idea--forget it). Porsche sales guy never mentioned this,,nor, did I see anything in the P ads.
    Speculation:
    * one becomes happier,,,ergo relationships improve,
    * for those of us over 45,,,,we "look" younger and act younger, look for the enjoyment in our lifes at all levels,
    * for those of us under 35,,,babes like kool cars (my memory is likely failing me),
    * we refocus on the things that matter, enjoy life,
    * we don't have any more money,,, focus better when one is
Porsche poor, (don't know where this one is going),
    * friends like to ride and drive our toy,,, more socializtion with P wanna be's,
    * porsche, women, sex are all the same. It is the circle of
    life,,,,It's a 'small world".
This is a long weekend in the States with Thanksgiving. I have a lot to be thankful for. Now, I have found more to
    be hopeful/thankful for....I think..
Take good care of yourselves... life is short (really),,,,count your real blessings ,
    Best Regards,

Very interesting question (I mean the P-car/happiness question in general, whatever it may effect in detail ).

There was an interesting article in the November 6th edition of the FT (Headline: "Happiness begins with a wealth of experience") referring to a research analysis conducted by Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein.

Here are some quotes from the article:

"Rich people are likeley to find more happiness scuba-diving or going to a concert than buying that Ferrari" (Greetings to Nick )

"There was a mass of evidence to suggest that spending on experiences, such as walking the Machu Picchu trail in Peru, rather than possessions, seemed to make people happier"

"Explaining the benefits of experiences over possessions they tended to be unique whereas a house or car is likely to become the norm very quickly."

"Materialistic goals may even cause dissatisfaction with life and mental disorders such as paranoia"

Of course the article is somewhat generalising but there maybe some truth to the statements made. To me it's boiling down to the question whether you see your Porsche more as a possession thing (materialistic) or as an experience (happiness) thing.

Maybe as car enthusiasts we can have the best of both worlds as a Porsche is a nice possession for sure, but in the first place it's an experience (remember the goose bumps
when listening to the engine sound while revving it or the increasing heartbeat when flooring it ).

And to me it even adds to the experience that I can share it with other car enthusiasts (like with you Rennteamers ) rather than having a quite unique experience like climbing Mount Everest.

However I am not so sure about the danger of a mental disorder as mentioned in the article, because sometimes the P-virus seems to be just that

    Just my 2 cents...

    Enjoy Thanksgiving

Re: Side effects of Porsche Ownership..... ah hem !

Good comments and I would add why not travel the old fashioned way - by automobile - in you Porsche and experience this great country thereby combining memorable experiences with the Porsche driving experience? Within 500 miles of where I live (Illinois) I can travel to about a dozen different states. Many new experiences to be had in those states and what better way to experience the new experiences than in a Porsche!!

Re: Side effects of Porsche Ownership..... ah hem !

If you're fortunate and become "succe$$ful" one eventually gets used to all the nice materialistic stuff. What people may be feeling, when they bring home the "best sports car the world has to offer" and certainly one of the most beautiful, is a kind of symbolic-materialistic euphoria. It doesn't last very long. Sadly, it doesn't have THAT much real impact on your life, longterm.

Re: Side effects of Porsche Ownership..... ah hem !

I believe if you're happy with yourself in the 1st place, a Porsche can definitely add to your happiness/ enjoyment of life.

As far as side effects- don't own one yet, but when I test drove one, I definitely felt even more alive, happy for several weeks afterwards.

Re: Side effects of Porsche Ownership..... ah hem !

I was confident before the P car. Now I am even more confident.....

Re: Side effects of Porsche Ownership..... ah hem !

Excellent thread on an issue not always thought about on this board. It made me think about what my P-car really means to me. I am 40 and single and this is my third P-car. Yes I get stares from people and the wantabe racers are always wanting to measure up at a stoplight. I even think I have had better luck with women because of my P-cars (none of which have been keepers..women that is). Not to sound too immature but at times I did like to take my car out to be seen but them something happened. I met a girl who could care less about my brand new 997cabS. To her it was just another car albeit a sexy one. I began to tell her all the things this car can do and why it is my pride and joy. She can now tell the difference between a 996 and 997-knows the HP figures and evolution of p-cars. She has experienced the thrill of a 997's performance on tight winding mountain roads and the roar of PSE at full throttle. Though this process both her and I have learned a great deal about these cars. She has learned what a porsche can do and I have learned what this car really means to me. Now I enjoy the car wholly for what it is, a masterpiece of engineering.

As with most things perspective is the key to understanding. As I stated my P-car has attracted various women in the past. But interestingly enough the woman who could care less about the car of my dreams turns out to be the woman of my dreams. How about that for a side effect!

I can't really comment on the improved sex comment because, unlike in 'em roomy Carreras!, there's simply not enough space for sex in my Boxster.

The general happiness factor definitely improves for me with a nice car. Every morning I slide into the drivers seat and a grin spreads over my face. Just hearing the engine sound makes up for a million bad hair days!

Throt, did you take off the X 1/9's targa-like hard-top beforehand

Guess my times as an contortion artist are over now, should consider to cancel my order for the 987S and go for a Cayenne instead

Re: Side effects of Porsche Ownership..... ah hem !

a porsche car will definitly attract more women and give you a clear push on the first talk. but then you should see the effect with a ferrari or a lamborghini ,its crazy..you have you keep with you waiting tickets...

    Yes, exactly.

Re: Side effects of Porsche Ownership..... ah hem !

Fantastic topic, I must say I find it to be very amusing. As for my experiences, I am 22 and I currently have a girlfriend whom I am very faithful to (and she is not consumed with what I drive or own...she has her own line of gorgeous cars). Although, I must add that Porsche ownership does have it's perks. I do get girls that come up to me, or ask me about the car or what I do for a living. It is quite flattering, but I must remember that they are really paying the compliment towards the car...I am merely a "wingman" for the vehicle. One girl even went as far as to writting her phone number on my frosted roof on a cool night. I was both amused and upset because I had just washed the car.

In all seriousness though, I am not one to hold material things as my number one priority. But I have a passion for cars, and I feel lucky to be able to purchase the cars that I so desire. Driving for me, especially when I hear the engine roar as the RPMs increase, my soul comes alive. In my opinion, there are very few things that give me that same sense of euphoria. This car is flat-out amazing .
