    How can you tell if the dealer put too much oil in?

    Took my 997S in to the dealer for the first oil change. The cost was less than I expected (<$200). However, the oil level is reading at the maximum (over the three bars).

    I am a little concerned that they overfilled the oil. What would happen if there is too much oil in the engine?

    Check the charges on your repair bill to see how many quart did they used.

    Try this unit. Works well ASSUMING you have a straigh shot to the oil sump from the oil cap.

    Ordinarily you just go thru the dipstick tubing. The unit comes with all the various sized tubing. There's other less expensive simpler units for oil removal.

    That's what I'd do. No problem, just suck out a half quart. Not a good idea to have excessive oil: can do significant damage. I'm not sure but someone else here undoubtedly knows.

    One problem that too much oil in the crankcase causes is the spark plugs can get saturated with oil and will need to be removed and replaced. Probably an expensive proposition.

    I wouldn't start or drive the car. Have it towed back to the dealer or just drain the oil at home and pour in the correct amount using new oil.

    You can tell for sure by a broken engine.

    Just kidding: the oil level reading usually shows too much oil, so I wouldn't worry too much.

    LOL! There you have it. Three posts with comprehensive advice. Take your pick. Drain it, flat-bed-truck it dealer, or (probably the wisest) don't worry about it. Funny. How to choose? How about this? If you are seeing a mental health professional I'd reccommend the former two. If you're perfectly happy or recovered/recovering I'd just forget it and drive the car. :grin

    The car is now parked for the Winter. If the car has too much oil, it will be very visibible when the car is started in the spring (lots of smoke if it decides to start). Until then, I have decided not to worry. If there is a problem, it is the Dealers problem.

    I took a look at the invoice and the manual. The invoice says they used 9 liters of oil. The manuals says that the car holds 8.25 liters. In talking to the dealer, they have assured me that the extra oil will not be a problem. We will find out sometime mid-March!

When checking the level of oil in the engine, the car should be on a level plane, and should be relatively cold. I've run into several people lately who insist in keeping the crankcase topped off completely, and they invariably check the dipstick just after shutting down the engine. Now look at this image, and then read on.


    Reading the oil in this way results in an erroneous reading because a quantity of oil (usually about half a litre) is still confined in the oilways and passages (galleries) of the engine, and takes some time to drain back into the crankcase. On the image, the blue areas are where oil is likely to still be running back down to the sump. But on seeing what appears to be an abnormally low level on the dipstick, these buffoons then add more oil to the crankcase. The oilways and passages all empty, and suddenly the engine becomes over-filled with oil, going way above the 'MAX' mark on the dipstick. The problem with this is that the next time the engine is run, the windage in the crankcase and other pressures generated by the oil pump, etc. place a great strain on the seal on the rear main bearing.
    Eventually, often much sooner than the ordinary man in the street might expect, the rear main bearing seal ruptures, and the engine becomes a 'leaker'. If you've got a manual gearbox, this means one thing: this oil goes right onto the flywheel and the face of the clutch disc. A lubricated clutch is A Bad Thing.
    If this still goes unnoticed, the front seal is the next to go, and the engine then becomes a 'gusher'. As well as smothering the clutch with oil from the rear, the oil now coming from the front leak will be neatly distributed about the engine bay as it hits the front pulley - often propelling it out as far as the brake discs. It's sort of like a Hollywood disaster movie in the making, yet people don't consider this.
